I turned on the Oregon-Arizona State game, and caught this gem from Bill Walton: he mentioned 1 of the players who had transferred from Duquesne, and said of them "I think Duquesne is D-1 . . .Norm Nixon . . . I think they are still D-1."

He cracks me up when he starts talking about those “truck stop conferences”.

His college career corresponds to an era when in fact Duquesne was relevant more so than Pitt
uh, ya, his last year at UCLA Pitt was 25-4 and in the to 20 and Duquesne was 12-12....Duquesne may have spent time of near equal relevance they were never really more relevant..

Nixon was one of the best players to ever play in this city.

In 1977 Nixon led the Dukes to the NCAA Tournament. That season they were not great but, got hot in the ECBL Tournament and won the thing in Philly, against Villanova. Pitt finished the regular season, 1-9 in conference and the Dukes were 3-7, with two victories in three games over Pitt.

That was not a terrible conference and had some seriously physical play. Rutgers, Villanova, GW, UMass, WVU, State Pen, the Dukes and Pitt were the eight teams.

The Dukes beat State Pen, UMass and then Villanova in the conference tournament and then lost to VMI in the first round of NCAA. Nixon averaged 22 ppg and 5.9 assists that season. He scored 1,805 points in his 104-game Duquesne career.

It is telling, though, that his only reference to Duquesne was a player from 45 years ago.

Not that Nixon grew up in western PA, but it is incredible how many good players came from the area starting with Stokes and Twyman in the class of '51 to the class of '74, which I believed was Mel Bennett, Brad Davis and Pat Cummings.

Pitt's administration screwed the pooch big time not taking hoops more seriously and instead hired coaches who hated to recruit.

No doubt.

They are the only program in the city that has saved the Pirates from being the worst-run program in the city, other than Bridge Maintainance.

I don't live in Pittsburgh and this board is the only place where I ever see Duquesne basketball ever being mentioned. And it still baffles me why Duquesne is relevant to anyone on this board.

Walton wondering if Duquesne is still D-1 is an accurate response for a normal person. Norm Nixon is probably also the only Duquesne player that I could name.
