Technical Problems
Earlier this week Rivals.com experienced a major outage. It was probably the worst in six years. Rivals.com is in the process of a major upgrade of hardware and to degree software. Unfortunately until this migration is complete we may experience temporary problems. The network has seen dramatic growth and there really is little choice but to upgrade. We ask for your patience until this migration is complete. Thanks in advance.
Recruiting Yearbooks
If you are an annual subscriber you should be receiving your recruiting yearbook. On page 128 there is a $10.00 coupon good for purchase in the Rivals store. Try not to be distracted too long but the young ladies on the next few pages.
Is this the next level?
When Pitt Athletic Director Jeff Long let Coach Walt Harris go and replaced him with Dave Wannstedt most fans thought the program would be moved to a higher level. So far that certainly has not happened. It has been a very disappointing two years. It might have looked a lot better if they had not allowed a two touchdown lead to slip away in the overtime loss at Connecticut.
Pitt and Syracuse both found their coaching staffs under attack as the Big East Conference was imploding and both programs have taken hit. It will apparently take longer to reestablish both programs than their fans would like to see. Former Alabama coach Bill Curry was interviewed recently on the firing of Mike Shula. He made the case that it often takes five years to find out if you have the right coach in place. He called it a form of mass mental illness when fans force coaches out without giving them five full years. His point is if (Alabama) fans keep making the same mistake over and over again it is a form of mental illness.
The coaches on the Southside have all enjoyed success at some level during their careers. (Some at the college level and others at the NFL level). From everything I seen they are working long, hard hours to turn it around. Sometimes it just does not come together are quickly as we would all like. Unfortunately we live in an instant gratification age. McDonald’s and Dominos Pizza seldom promise you good food. They simply promise to deliver it quickly and that it will be at least luke warm when you get it. In an age of instant gratification they are a big success.
This staff has given every indication they know the importance of recruiting. They work hard to get the best players possible.
Sometimes you need changes on the staff for change sake. All of the parts seem to be made up of successful components but somehow it does not come together as a team. All we know for sure is no one in authority will force the head coach to make changes. It is his staff. It is his responsibility to make it work. We keep hearing rumors that Bill Cherpak may join the staff. Coach Cherpak has put together a very successful program at Thomas Jefferson. He is both the athletic director and the head coach. I am not sure he wants to leave TJ but this would seem like a logical time if he wants to make the move to the college level.
Dave Wannstedt is in the second year of a five year contract. He isn’t going anywhere. Criticizing coaches half the fun of sports but I would be careful of bashing the program too hard. When the noise gets too loud at any school it simply puts the program back several years. Coach Curry has a point. Pitt recently picked up good news on commitment from a couple of prospects. A few found it necessary to bash the program even when there was good news.
We had an opportunity to watch a couple of the WPIAL playoff games from the sidelines this past week before heading for the “Pete” to watch Pitt blast Florida State. It was a long day and I owe my wife big time.
Thomas Jefferson’s Lucas Nix is a must get for Pitt. Nix is 6’ 6” tall and weighs about 285. He is only a junior so he figures to get a lot bigger. Pitt has had trouble landing quality lineman from the area in recent years. Nix is one they cannot let get away. He is a must get.
Pitt was slow to offer Thomas Jefferson’s Chris Drager earlier this year and he committed to Virginia Tech. Chris also reported this week that Drager has been talking to Pitt. He can play tight end or defensive end. After watching him Saturday afternoon I hope they are able to change his mind.
Penn State commit Nick Sukay was also impressive Saturday. Not sure what position he will play but he has Division 1 size and speed. It would not surprise me if he ended up at outside linebacker.
Jeannette’s Terrelle Pryor seems to glide at times. It looks like he is moving in slow motion with his long stride but then you realize he is flying by everyone of the field. The Pitt basketball program needs to land a big time player. Pryor is at the very top of my basketball wish list. It he goes the football route he might be tough to sign. He wants to play both sports and a few will tell him we will allow you to do anything you want. It simply isn’t realistic these days.
Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley was sitting near us at the Pitt-Louisville game. This is the second year in a row he has been at a Pitt game late in the year. He had an attractive blond female with him but this looks like a busman’s holiday.
I am not sure if you got a chance to see the Dave Wannstedt program on FSN earlier this week. It featured H.B. Blades and former Panther tight end Jim Corbett. It was an excellent show. H.B. Blades has been a credit to Pitt. Find more guys with his attitude and Pitt will do fine going forward. He is a class act. Jim Corbett is doing work in Nigeria. His story was simply awe inspiring. The show is repeated today at 12:30 pm. If you have a chance please check it out.
Bill Stull appears to be the starting quarterback next year but I have a colleague who feels that Kevin Smith has a good chance of grabbing the starting spot. Pat Bostick will be in the mix but figures to behind now that he has decided not to come to Pitt in January.
Recruiting recap
Pitt will host a group of recruits this weekend. Here is a list of those we think will make official visits this weekend.
Zach Brown RB Royal Palm Beach, Florida
Myles Caragein DL Keystone Oaks
Cameron Holland OL Pittsburgh Perry
Kyle Hubbard TE Lakewood St Edward’s
Anthony Jackson DB Weston, Florida
Chris Jacobson OL Keystone Oaks
Jabaal Sheard DE Hollywood Hills, Florida
Tony Tucker DE Washington, DC
Greg Williams RB Naples, Florida
Pitt has another group scheduled next weekend. You can find a tentative list under the Football Recruiting tab.
We have been reporting for some time that Perry offensive lineman Cameron Holland from Perry had been looking around ever since it was apparent a coaching change was in the works at North Carolina. Last week Tony Greco reported on the Pantherlair that he would visit Pitt this weekend. The North Carolina site confirmed it again this week.
West Mifflin junior Leon Green told both Tony Greco and Mike Farrell in recent weeks that he had an offer. Pitt is recruiting him but has not yet made an offer in writing.
Chris Peak reported this past week that TE Nick Krupa decided not to come to Pitt and will play baseball instead. We had been hearing this lately but I thought it would take longer to play out. It makes the commitment by Kyle Hubbard make more sense. Hubbard committed to Pitt without ever seeing the football facilities. Hopefully his visit this weekend will meet his expectations.
Tommie Duhart told Rivals Jeremy Crabtree that he was visiting Florida in January. We heard one report that his mother had a heart to heart talk and he now seems to be back in the Pitt camp. If this young man is smart he will not make trips without a firm written offer in his hand. It is a dangerous game. Yesterday Tony Greco had a follow up article with Duhart.
Pitt now has 15 verbal commitments. They have also now given a scholarship to kicker Conor Lee. Lee had a great year and is certainly a deserving recipient. I assume that punter Dave Brytus will get one too at some point. Pitt still also must account for Baldwin’s Justin Hargrove who has taken a grayshirt. Sometimes you can go forward or backwards with January starts so I am not sure which year these three will be charged against.
Pitt has commitments from two running backs in Henry Hynoski and Xavier Stinson. We expect they will take at least two more running backs. They currently have offers out to five more. They may not all end up being running backs. High schools often put their best athletes at running back or quarterback as Thomas Jefferson did this year with Dom DeCicco. This week two Florida running backs will visit in Zach Brown and Greg Williams[/B]. Zach Brown is down to Pitt and Wisconsin.
Mike Farrell had an article and a video piece this week on running back LeSean McCoy. He got McCoy to say what we have been hearing for weeks. This will get down to Pitt and Penn State. Some are surprised that Penn State is recruiting him this hard. He is scheduled to visit Pitt January 12th. The Milford coach said he will also visit Penn State but is unsure on a date.
There is still a long way top go before we get to Letter of Intent Day in February but it appears Pitt may have cooled a little on Valley Forge’s Bryan Williams and Brentwood’s Da’Von Moore.
There are a lot of admirers of Woodland Hills safety Rontez Miles but there are also academic issues. He could be headed for a prep school before the recruiting process is over. It is probably Pitt’s best chance of landing him.
We were talking to Perry coach Bill Gallagher this week and he tells us cornerbackJared Williams of Perry will make an official visit to Pitt in December. He is also being recruited by West Virginia and Iowa.
Pitt has been recruiting four-star linebacker Jermaine Pierce but at the end of the day we think he will stay with his commitment to Syracuse. The Milford coach told us there are no planned visits to Pitt and that he remains committed to Syracuse.
In further conversations with Coach Bill Chaplic of Milford Academy he said he expects Michigan State commit DE Ishmyl Johnson to visit Pitt but was unsure of a date. He did not believe DT Charles Deas would visit Pitt. He also expects wide receiver Aundre Wright to make his official visit to Pitt but was unsure of the date at this point. Wight you will recall has already give Pitt a verbal commitment.
This week offensive tackle Branden Curry has said Pitt and Florida State are at the top of his list. We will just have to be patient to see if Florida State offers. One college coach recently said, The first thing I do when recruiting Florida is ask the high school coach if they have an from the big three. If they do I move on.” Florida will send 400+ players to college on scholarship. The Big Three can not take them all.
This week Dave Wannstedt indicated that Pitt will concentrate more heavily on Maryland and Northern Virginia more heavily going forward and that Aubrey Hill will be assigned to this area. We like this move. You can spend a lot of calories in Florida only to watch the Big Three swoop in late and take your prize. Players from the Baltimore-Washington corridor are also within driving distance of Pittsburgh so taking an unofficial visit is not nearly as difficult.
The Big East-SEC hoop agreement
As we have reported earlier on the message boards the Big East Conference and the SEC have entered into a three-year agreement to play four games each year. There will be two doubleheaders each year with one being played each year in SEC country and one in Big East territory. Reportedly Nashville, Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis and Tampa have all expressed interest in hosting the southern portion. You would have to think that New York and Chicago would be good bets to be in the northern mix. Hopefully this agreement will be a big success and will be expanded in future years so that they play six or eight games each year.
Are we ranked No. 1 or No. 2?
This week Ohio State lost to North Carolina. If Pitt beats Auburn on the road on Sunday there is a good chance UCLA and Pitt will be ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the country in next week’s poll. Who would have thought that was possible when Ben Howland left Pitt to go to UCLA. It is an amazing story on how both programs flourished.
The Panthers (7-0) are fun to watch but if they are going to make a serious run in both the Big East and the NCAA tournaments they may need to find a way to get Sam Young untracked. I prefer eight man rotations but Pitt has nine guys that deserve playing time. Perhaps more importantly Sam Young, Keith Benjamin, Ronald Ramon and Tyrell Biggs will all be expected to play big roles next year. These four are not starting but all need playing time to gain experience for next year.
The Pitt women are 7-0 for the first time in school history. They return home to play Penn State Friday night at the Pete. They are encouraging Pitt fans to wear gold to have a “Gold Out” night against the Nittany Lions.
Cloud Community College is now 8-0 after beating Northeast CC (Nebraska) 65-52. They had to do it without Pitt commit Cassin Diggs who missed most of the game with an ankle injury. In their previous game Diggs scored 17 points while making 6 of 12 from the field. He was the team’s high scorer. The Cloud Thunderbirds play No. 12 Coffeyville (8-1) on Saturday night.
