It’s almost time for some football
The Pittsburgh Steelers report to training camp today with their first practice scheduled for Monday. A number of the high school teams in the South are scheduled to start to wearing pads next week. Pitt will hold their Media Day on Monday August 7th and will start practicing the following day. It won’t be long now until the Pitt football season is here.
The Pantherlair has now put up six photo galleries of the Pitt football team working out on the Southside. If you have been on vacation the past week or two and have missed any simply go to News Headlines in the upper left hand side of this site. We have had published 90 photographs so far. We have tried to concentrate on many of the freshmen. We often have to rely on photos taken in their sophomore or junior years in high school and some of these players have matured since that time. I like the fact that these workouts do not include helmets. It gives our readers a chance to see their faces. Once Coach Wannstedt and his staff take over the helmets go on and they usually stay on. We will try to have a couple of more sets next week.
Pitt lists 17 redshirt freshmen and 27 true freshmen in their media guide (there are a few walk-ons in this mix). If I understand Coach Wannstedt correctly, these 44 players will practice separately for the first few days. The staff is doing this to get these players as many reps as possible early before making decisions on who will get more reps going forward. At the end of the day the staff must get this team ready to play Virginia so you can not allow a lot of time to pass before getting the first two units ready to play this fall.
College coaches usually take some vacation time in July. Most were golfing in Fox Chapel earlier this week. Starting next week the coaches seldom get a day off until after Letter of Intent Day in February. It is a seven day a week job. Chris Peak took a few vacation days this week. Once camp starts he seldom gets a day off until basketball is over in March.
