Two steps forward and one step back

My old computer has been giving me problems for weeks. It became a nightmare to use. Yesterday my new Dell computer arrived. It is up and running although it will probably take several days top get all of the software loaded and files transferred. It is a huge upgrade from my old system. My wife will be happy that she gets her laptop back which I was forced to use as an interim step.

Just as I was installing my new computer my phone lines went dead. I had calls out to a pile of recruits. It wiped out a couple of days of calling prospects. Who knows how many tried to return calls to my phone lines that were not working. It is very frustrating to say the least. They are still out this morning.

Greatest player’s poll

Rival.com continues their Great Player’s poll. Tony Dorsett was an easy winner in one semi-final round. It looks like Dan Marino will get past Hugh Green. The Dan Marino matchup with Tony Dorsett could be an interesting one next week.

Pitt has had many great players over the years. Rivals.com picked Dan Marino, Mike Ditka, Hugh Green and Tony Dorsett as Pitt’s four representatives. We thought we would run another poll on our Home Page. If you could pick one more former Panther great to join this list who would you pick? Would you pick Mark May, Bill Fralic, Jimbo Covert, Larry Fitzgerald, Ricky Jackson or Ironhead Heyward? We have excluded some old timers like Joe Schmidt and Marshall Goldberg as I am sure most of our subscribers never got a chance to see them play. Please vote on the Pantherlair Home Page.

A navigational hint

There is a wealth of data in the Rivals.com system. Sometimes even I forget that some of this information is available. As a result we like to pass along navigational hints on a regular basis so you can enjoy the full power of the Rival.com system. These should be particularly helpful to our new subscribers.

If you go to a player’s profile in the football database and checkout tight end Nick Krupa (one of Pitt’s newest commits) you will find that he was recruited by Pitt assistant coach Charlie Partridge. If you then click on Coach Partridge’s name you will see some of other players that Coach Partridge is recruiting. This is a feature that only Rivals.com currently offers.

Software upgrades

This week Rivals.com installed another seven software up grades. Unfortunately it occasionally slows the system a little. I have had some trouble accessing some of the player profiles from time to time. There are still about 50 upgrades to go.

It general they are try to give the network a cleaner look while at the same time making it easier to navigate. You will notice on the right hand side of more pages both the network tickers and the Pantherlair ticker. All of this is to help keep you from missing articles while at the same time giving you a clean look.

Football rosters updated

We have added the incoming Pitt freshmen to the football rosters on the left hand site of this page. We still need to add numbers and an assortment of other data once we received the info from the University.

We have not plugged any freshman into the depth chart although several are good bets to push their way onto the two-deep before we are too far into the season. Most prognosticators seem to have Pitt going about 7-5 this year. For the Panthers to go above this mark they will probably need three things to happen 1) Kevin Collier to give them a lot of help at running back, 2) Jeff Otah to be the real deal at left tackle and 3) at least one of the four freshmen wide receivers to make a significant contribution.

Shoe companies camps

This weekend the ABCD Camp is being held in Teaneck, New Jersey, the Nike All-American Camp is being held in Indianapolis and the adidas Super Star Camp will be held in Georgia. Jerry Myer, Justin Young and other Rivals reporters should be filing basketball reports all weekend. Keep checking the Ticker for camp updates.

Rivals Radio

Rivals Radio is featuring reports on most of the BCS football teams this month. We are now less than 60 days away from opening day and in about a month fall practice sessions will be under way. Rivals Radio has already done features on South Florida and UConn. They had an interview recently with Huskies coach Randy Edsall. It has been achieved if you missed it. Dave Wannstedt was on Rivals Radio a couple of times last year. One of the Rivals radio producers was telling me that he will try to have Coach Wannstedt on this month although last year at this time he was vacationing and he had Tyler Palko fill in for him. We will try to give you a heads up on which day Pitt will be featured.

Some football recruiting updates

Yesterday we had an article featuring safety Eric Rodriguez he is a talented athlete who is ranked No. 10 in the state of New Jersey. He is in no hurry with his recruiting process and plans to take his visits in the fall. We came across a story which said that last December he was stabbed in the neck with a piece of glass just missing an artery. He is fine now and is fully recovered. He was at a Burger King when a group of teenagers from another neighborhood started a fight resulting in a life threatening wound to Rodriguez. The coach at North Bergen warned his football players to stay away from the Burger King but one of his other players was shot there recently. I would say its time for the North Bergen players to look for a McDonalds, Pizza Hut or Chick-Fil-A. The Burger King hangout looks like bad news.

In case you missed it Central Catholic’s Tino Sunseri has been selected to attend the Elite 11 quarterback camp in California as a “ballboy”. Nice honor for Sunseri. It looks like you will have to beat Central Catholic if you want to win the WPIAL AAAA title this year.

Since last weeks War Room Pitt picked up commitment from offensive tackles John Fieger and Dan Matha. They also picked up verbal commitments from center/guard Greg Gaskins and tight end Nick Krupa.

In our ideal scenario Pitt would also pickup Andrew Devlin from Mount Lebanon and Cameron Holland from Perry. Devlin would give them a big blocking tight end that might also grow into a tackle down the road. If you pick these two up this summer that should put Pitt in pretty good shape up front on the offensive side of the ball. If not it is back to the drawing board.

Pitt now has 9 verbal commitments. We are using 20 as a working number but this number could always fluctuate by one or two. It is always a moving target. Pitt will need a little attrition to take 20 but it is not an unreasonable assumption based on history. Players often run into academic issues or get injured. One or two could transfer for more playing time. How many players Pitt brings back for a fifth year could be determined by how some players perform this fall. This number is always changing and being reexamined by any coaching staff.

One of the areas that still needs to be addressed in the Class of 2007 is running back. During last weekends flurry of commitments to Pitt Southern Columbia running back Henry Hynoski stopped by the Pantherlair to check out our War Room. At one time we were ready to ring him up as our lock of the week. He seems to have gone away for now and we are back to 60/40 that he will eventually commit to Pitt.

Pitt has been recruiting several Florida running backs including Bo Williams and Xavier Stinson. Yesterday Tony Greco had an article on Stinson who plans to visit Pitt this summer. Stinson will visit Pitt, Florida, Tennessee and Auburn this summer. He is an interesting candidate.

Running back Bo Williams is Mr. Personality. He has already visited Pittsburgh and seems to love Pitt but he also seems to be a quote machine. He could be this year’s version of Ricky Garry.

A couple of new running back candidates popped up within the past week or so. New York running back Doug Hogue visited both Pitt and Penn State recently. He has Pitt, Penn State Syracuse, Maryland, Rutgers and others are after him and most have offered. The Penn State site interviewed him last weekend. You can check their story in the database. I have played phone tag with him for a week. I spoke to his father once and missed a few of his return calls. My luck went completely in the toilet when my home phone lines went dead.

Ohio State running back Erick Haw is transferring in order to find playing time. Our sources in Columbus say he talked to UCLA but they do not think he will go there. They figured he was headed to a 1AA school where he would not have to sit out a year. However, he is coming to Pittsburgh for a visit. Our sources say DW has not yet decided if he should offer him. Eric Haw (6’ 1” 212) was recruited by Pitt in the Class of 2004. He had offers from Pitt, Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio State coming out of high school. Haw camped at Pitt in the summer of 2003 so he has been to Pitt before. One of the folks we talked to said they heard he had a good spring game for the Buckeyes. Antonio Pittman is the starter in Columbus. It appears that coming out of spring practice Haw was in a battle for the third or fourth slot on the depth chart behind Chris Wells and perhaps Maurice Wells. If Haw were eligible this fall this he might be well worth the gamble. Unfortunately he has to sit out a year. This one could be a tough call. He would have two years of eligibility remaining. It is not hard to have folks in front of you at tailback in Columbus. DW decision might tell you were he feels he stands with several of the freshmen he is recruiting. (Also please see Chris Peak comments later in the War Room).

When we were attending the Rivals.com conference two weeks ago we were talking to a reporter from Michigan State. He asked if Pitt fans were unhappy with Dave Wannstedt after last year’s disappointing season? I told him I thought he still had the support of most alums and more importantly of the Pitt administration. He was brought in with the understanding that the program was not near what folks would like and that most recognized that it would take a while to recover from a couple of disappointing recruiting years just prior to his arrival.

This brings us to the subject of junior college players. Several readers have asked about Tommie Duhart and Derel Strong this week. We also had an article Valley Forge’s Bryan Williams this past week. Pitt coaches have been tied up with running camps in June and securing commits from a number of high school players. Although they stay in contact with most of these guys I do not think their focus has gone in this direction yet. As we get a little deeper into the process they may have a better picture of the needs that still need to be filled. We have followed Williams for a couple of years. If he gets his academic status in order he is a versatile athlete that could be used in a number of ways. We would love to see him playing on Saturday for the Panthers.

Placekicker David Abdul had heart surgery recently. This means Connor Lee will handle the kicking duties in fall camp and perhaps for the balance of the year. Tony Greco has can article this morning on kicker Brandon Walker. I think Pitt will simply try to get a kicker or two to walkon this year unless Conor Lee gives them reason to be concerned. Lee has the leg to earn a scholarship himself. He kicked well in practice last year but kicking is like golfing. It often is about confidence and concentration in game situations.

Pitt has nine commitments. It would not surprise us if they picked up another four and maybe five more this summer. If they do the staff will be in a better position to know where to concentrate their efforts this fall. One area that has yet to be totally addressed is linebacker although Dom DeCicco may play outside linebacker if he continues to grow. Chris Peak was trying to track down Ronnie St. LeFluer from Hollywood Hills, Florida and ran into a funny story. Chris eventually had to turn this one over to reporters from Minnesota. They have a story up today on the Ticker.

Transfer talk

There was a thread on this board this week about a possible transfer in from running back Erik Haw. Haw, who chose Ohio State over Pitt in 2004, was one of the Buckeyes’ contributor this spring, but the backfield depth chart in Columbus is cluttered, at best. As a result, Haw has been looking for a transfer and appears to be very interested in becoming a Panther. From what I can gather, the interest is getting closer to being reciprocal, but there may be some stumbling blocks.

As everyone knows, if Haw transfers to Pitt (or any other D-IA school), he will have to sit out a year. The ideal situation is for Haw to make his move now and be on campus at his new school in a few weeks. He would have to sit out this season but would be eligible for two seasons after that. What makes this difficult for Pitt is that Haw would count as part of the incoming class, and I’m not sure the Panthers really have room for him. They already have reached the full allotment of 25 scholarships in one year, and they’ve had to do some finagling to hit that number. In order for Pitt to have room for Haw, they’ll need to do some more work on getting one more opening.

College coaches are notoriously good at working the numbers to get the players they want, and I won’t put it past the Pitt coaches to figure a way to get Haw in Oakland. I just think it might prove to be more work than its worth. We’ll see what happens.

You never know

Sometimes you think you’ve heard just about everything a high school kid can say about the recruiting process. There are times when you’re on the phone interviewing them and you find yourself wondering about how you’re going to write what they’re saying, since most of them say very similar things. Then there are times when a prospect says stuff that makes you remember that every kid is different.

This week I was interviewing Ronnie St. Fleur, a linebacker from Hollywood, Fla. He attends the same school as defensive end Jabaal Sheard and, while the Pitt coaches have interest in both players, it appears that they have only offered Sheard. Nonetheless, St. Fleur hadn’t been interviewed in some time, so I thought I’d check in with him.

We start talking about the recruiting process and, at one point, he stops me and says, “Oh, didn’t you hear?” I’m not sure what I was supposed to hear, so he informs me that he committed to Minnesota two weeks ago. In a previous article I had read that he was very high on Miami and, essentially, he was waiting on an offer from the Hurricanes. So I ask him what will happen if Miami offers.

Me: So what will you do if Miami offers?
Him: Well, if they offer, I’ll consider them. But they’ll have to wait until February to find out, just like everybody else.
Me: Um…didn’t you say you committed to Minnesota?
Him: Yeah, I did. I wanted to secure something.
Me: But you’re still going to consider other schools?
Him: Yeah. If I have the season I expect to have, there might be more offers, like from Miami and some other places. I just wanted to secure something.
Me: Did you tell the Minnesota coaches this stuff about Miami and all?
Him: I told them. They asked about Miami and I said ‘they’re on top of the list, just like you are.’ Then I told them that I just wanted to secure something. They said, ‘hey, you might have picked the best one.’

So, apparently the recruitment of Ronnie St. Fleur is still open. He went on to tell me that the Pitt coaches have talked to him about coming north for a visit (on a side note: he’s never been to Minnesota either). He wasn’t able to make it to Pitt earlier this summer, but he said that he hopes to get up here near the end of August or thereabouts.

In the end, he gave me 75% odds that he will sign with Minnesota.
