Who’s on Line?
Unfortunately we have had to temporarily disable our “Who’s on Line” feature. We have several visitors to the site who are adults but still at the 6th grade in the maturity process. My grandson is in the 6th grade. He and his friends would think this stuff is hilarious. Fortunately my grandson and his friends will out grow this in a few years. Sadly I have little hope for a few of the visitors to this site who are pumped up with testosterone but still stuck back in the sixth grade from a maturity level. It is too bad. I always like this feature. It thought it brought a little fun to the site. Hopefully we will be able to bring it back at some point. I liked keeping track of whether Wyndell was really lurking.
A few thoughts on basketball recruiting
I had hoped Pitt would land forward Alex Galindo. He seemed like a player that would fit nicely into their system. The big question now is will Jamie Dixon find another late pickup as happened with Ontario Lett and Antonio Graves (both of the players signed in August).
It may take a while to find out. Today is the last day of the late signing period. Letters of Intent signed after this date are not valid until classes begin in the fall. Virtually all of the top players have signed with the exception of those with academic question marks. You can be sure if Coach Dixon and his staff do spot a prospect they will keep in low key until school starts for fear of losing him to another school.
Chances are they will hold the scholarship for the class of 2005. This would give Pitt at least 4 scholarships and perhaps as many as 6 depending on what Carl Krauser and Chris Taft decide to do. The early signing period begins in October. One could make the case that it will be the defining class in the coaching career of Jamie Dixon. If the Pitt is to continue at a high level the class of 2005 will have to be a good one with at least two high level players coming into the program.
Some ramblings on the football program
Pitt AD Jeff Long is to be commended for getting 6 games on national television this year despite the fact that Miami and Virginia Tech are no longer on the schedule. Jeff also has put into place a much better radio package, which should help the Pitt program reach more fans. In addition the new weekly show on Fox Sports Pittsburgh is a big plus. Pitt will get better media exposure this year as a result of these three factors.
Of all the teams in the “new Big East” the University of Pittsburgh is currently the best TV draw. The networks have made it clear to Pitt that if the new Big East football conference is to thrive Pitt has no choice but to move to a higher level. Who knows how quickly this will happen. Maybe not fast enough for alums and fans but we think the administration is aware of what needs to be done.
The networks reviewed Pitt’s future schedules. As you would expect, they liked the home and away series with Nebraska and Michigan State. Curiously they were not excited about the home and away series with Clemson.
New and improved database and the Nike Camps
The new database has been released and over time you will notice a number of changes, which will give you more information on a player. The goal is to give you more information on the players that Pitt and other major college programs are recruiting.
In the agreement that Rivals has with Student Sports some data on the Nike Camps is not available until 30 days after the camp. Currently data has been released from the camps held in Miami, Blacksburg and Columbus. Each week additional data from one or two camps will be added.
Not all players that attend the camp go through all of the drills. Justin King of Gateway and LaRod Stephens of Johnstown attended but did not go through all of the drills. Despite this factor we should end up with the results of over 2,000 prospects.
As a starter we have an article up today on Vladimir Richard from Piper High School in Sunrise, Florida. He attended the Nike Camp in Miami. If you click on “Miami Nike Camp” on his profile you will see his results from the Nike Camp. You can also drill down to see the results of every player that attended the Nike Camp in Miami.
