I tried to keep the list from 1960 to the present. These are players that went to Pitt from Western PA.

I'd go with Matt Yoklic (Pine Richland guy) at punter. He had better college stats than Brytus and he was briefly an Atlanta Falcon (don't think he ever punted in a regular season game.

I'm biased though he was a buddy of mine at Pitt.

Pretty damned impressive.

Ill argue Tom Tumulty over either McKillop or Sunseri

Played on some awful teams, thus costing him.

But he had a far better pro career than either if that matters.
great call on Tom. fantastic player.. think he was more of an OLB though, not sure where Sunseri played at pitt but yeah, going to TT here..

I thought about TT, but Schmidt is an NFL HOFer, Sunseri was an All-American and McKillop was a two-time All-American, so TT got squeezed out. I don't have a problem if someone differs from the three I named...

Schmidt and Sunseri were before my time but all american is all american. you have a valid point.

was a huge TT fan. Southern Miss game i think he single handedly won with an INT. first game of season, hopes are high, next week we host Virginia Tech, what could possibly go wrong..

Whats the criteria. Is it as a recruit, performance just in college or does pro performance get factored into the equation

I'm thinking Tom Flynn over Jordan Whitehead at safety. At very least Tom deserves an honorable mention...

The interesting thing about Fred Cox is that he was an RB at Pitt and never kicked, he went to the NFL and became a kicker there and never played RB.

That is factually incorrect.
According to this it's correct

Look at the college stats, no XPs no FGs no punting, unless he was a kickoff specialist?

According to Pitt's records Cox made 8 of 10 extra points and 1 of 2 field goals in 1959 and 15 of 16 extra points and 3 of 8 field goals in 1960.

I have a feeling that Pitt's records are far more accurate.

I am so disgusted with the local attitudes towards Pitt but what would be really but what would be really interesting is the all time Western Pa team at Pitt versus the all time Western Pa team that went to any other school. Somehow I am not thinking that the other 100+ schools produced any more successful football players. How and why Pitt hasn't figured out how to quantify, market and sell this is beyond me.

Off the top of my head:

QB. Marino vs Montana,Unitas, if D9 is included Kelly - advantage push

TE. Ditka vs Gronk (are we counting him) push

LB McKillop, Schmidt, Sunseri vs Lavar, Short, Posluszny, Lee (are we counting Johnstown if so Ham). Advantage PSU

CB Revis vs Ty Law advantage Pitt.

When I have more time I'll look more into it.

Or why with all the NFL hall of famers Pitt has produced, why hasn't their team records and rankings been better?

Or why with all the NFL hall of famers Pitt has produced, why hasn't their team records and rankings been better?
Very simply... You have a couple of superstar players surrounded by average players, thus you have mediocrity.

There are two ways to swing for the fences. One, you recruit as many 4 star recruits as you can. Or two, you say the hell with the stars and identify low recruited players with great potential and develop them into good players.

In both cases it's hit or miss based on the 4 star players Pitt has been able to land. Based on the 4 star players Pitt has brought in (especially over the last 10 years), Pitt is better off using option #2.

That's it.

Or why with all the NFL hall of famers Pitt has produced, why hasn't their team records and rankings been better?
God-awful administrations who look down on athletics.

Wes Posvar's dream of Pitt football being mid when the calendar was turning to 1982 and proceeding administrations acquiescing would make Wes proud.

If Gottfried coached the entire 90s with no academic restrictions, I believe 100 percent that Pitt football's perception would look entirely different. More wins, bowl games, draft picks, etc. That decade was brutal for the program.

Or why with all the NFL hall of famers Pitt has produced, why hasn't their team records and rankings been better?
Valid question. Lack of focus and commitment by the school brought the whole thing crashing down. The decline of talent overall locally. Sure you got HOFer Revis and AD, but so many of these other guys just turned out to be mediocre players. And I am not just talking about local guys who went to Pitt, but elsewhere. And finally, the lack of a difference maker at QB. The one time we had this, we rode it to an ACC Championship and 11 wins.
