At the end of the day, the NCAA basketball championship is decided by the NCAA tourney. Whether that is right, fair, the true barometer of a team, that is the metric. The sole metric. Of course, to do well in the tourney, you have to get into the tourney.
But just making the tourney is not really the goal. Pitt is not competing against 200 slots of low conference, single bid conferences. They are competing against the "P5" conference plus say the Big East, the American, Mizzou Valley and West Coast. Those are the traditional conferences that get more than the champion in, where most of the "at large" bids come from. Basically being in the ACC, with Pitt's OOC schedule, all they have to do is finish at .500 in conference to get a bid.
So you do this, then go out and maybe win a game in the conference tourney, and get a berth and go out in the first rd (rd of 64) in the NCAA's, so what? Maybe that is a big deal to a TCU, but where we have been? Not so much.
Even in our best years, when has the NCAA tourney been fun? When have we done like we did a few times in the Big East tourney, where we make an impromptu run to the finals? When have we really exceeded expectations?
As I said, I will trade this last 6 years of Pitt BB for a few lower lows if it comes with a few higher highs. I want this to be fun again. Pitt BB is not fun.
