i'd be curious to hear from the board. it's kind of gotten some publicity, very mixed reaction from the comments..

not a direct answer, but I remember when Giant Eagle used to have the Iggle Nest where you could leave your kids while you shopped in the store. Parents were turning it into free daycare. So I think there is a problem with child care here but not sure what can be done about it.

That's a tough one. If the 10 year old is responsible and the younger ones aren't too needy and it isn't a ridiculously long interview, I don't have a major problem with it. With phones and tablets, you can keep kids occupied for a long time.

I wouldn't do it with my own kids, but if this is actually what all happened I can understand it.

The story is representative of those who believe children must be under adult care 24-7. People call the cops when they see children walking along the street and alone in playgrounds. When I was 10, I was taking my younger siblings through local mining caves.

I'm fine with what this dad did.

the guy was massively wrong. you can't leave a one year old unattended. (or 6yo for that matter). but a baby? good lord.
should he have been arrested? no. that's not helping anything. call family services for an assessment and some education. if he doesn't want to participate, then take some action.

the dude had a kid at 14 so obviously decision making isn't one of his srong suits.

i feel like where he screwed up at is taking them to mcdonalds, or any establishment. if he had a home or rented somewhere, he'd have been a thousand times better off leaving them at home for an hour or two.

i just dont like the idea of dropping them off at a restaurant, just a poor decision. you basically put any liability on the employees. that's where i think he screwed up at..

NCPItt said it right though, we are ridiculous with how we treat kids as just these helpless human beings. i mean, parents make their 10 or 11 year old kids ask to leave the yard now, how laughable is that. imagine being in 4th or 5th grade and having to run into the house to ask your parents if you can go play down the street lol. you think im exaggerating but i dont think i am..

I feel bad for the guy but the law is the law. Not all 10 year olds are the same so perhaps the kid was trustworthy enough to watch over the other 2 but that doesn't make it legal. This probably should have been a warning though.

i dont even think mcdonalds has those anymore.. when is the last time you've seen a play area at a McD's?

not they are all square, grey buildings with a kiosk.

This story reminds me of one time, i had my dog at the dog park and my daughter needed picked up. Man, i was tempted to leave the dog in the park, go pick her up and come back in 10 minutes lol. but i chickened out. All i needed was something crazy to happen and i get arrested by some animal control officer..

it's not permission or anything. but i want my kids to tell me where they're going if they leave the house. kids are ####ing stupid and do stupid things. so i want to know where they are. just generally - "i'll be around the neighborhood." me: "ok." "i'm going to the next neighborhood over." me: "fine."

it's also not like when we were kids. i was in 3rd grade and road my bike down a busy street to the complete opposite side of town. you can't do that stuff anymore. freaks and weirdos all over the place.

We have a McDonald’s near us that has a sweet playground. I could have saved thousands on daycare by dropping my kids off there daily the last few years. My kids love it there.
