A very good weekend for Pitt football might not be over yet. It is not uncommon for official visitors to pull the trigger after they return home and have had a day or two to digest their visit, talk to their parents, talk to their HS coach, etc.
However, let’s assume no more verbals from this group of visitors. How do these commits affect future visits?
(1) Two DL commits. There are 4 DL scheduled to visit later this month. Is Charlie Partridge done recruiting for the year? Probably not because we likely lose 4 DL this year. But, he will be selective. It might not be a case of the first DL who wants to commit gets the spot; it might be the case of limiting verbals to one or two “must takes.” And, we still have two uncommitted DL who visited this week.
(2) Three DB commits. There is talk that Pitt sees Lewis as a Will LB. Even if true, we have 3 very highly rated DB prospects scheduled to visit, plus two ATH who probably are projected as DBs. This might be a position of first one (or two) to commit get the slots unless there is a must take.
(3) 0 LB Commits. Understandable because none visited. Unless Lewis is projected as a LB, this is wide-open. I imagine we would take at least 3 of the 4 scheduled to visit later this month.
(4) 1 WR Commit. Added to Fowler, does this mean we are done except for a “must take” like Hakeem Williams? I suspect so. We will see if the visits of any “ATH” now scheduled are cancelled because they were projected as. WRs.
(5) 0 OL Commits. The elephant in the roof almost every year. Only one visited and only two are scheduled to visit later this month. One thing about the style of smaller-quicker DL we are recruiting is that most of them probably can’t make the switch to OL. I only see two on the current roster who could. Obviously, a position of concern.
(6) 0 TE Commits. The baby elephant in the room. One visitor and he is committed to Cincy. Cincy has another TE commit, but Fickell uses a TE heavy offense. One scheduled visitor later this month.
(7) 1 QB Commit. He was already committed. We are finished recruiting this position except for a backup if Minchey should decommitted.
(8) 0 RB Commits. One visitor and one more scheduled later this month. Doesn’t seem to be a high priority.
(9) P/PK. I mention this because I have seen tweets about a couple of them working out for Pitt staff. Not sure how seriously Pitt will recruit this position.
