Like in terms of results. If we live in an era and watch this particular sport where the only national champions tend to be the Alabama's of the world, what do you want to get out of Pitt football beyond "a way to spend a Thursday night"?

I have no problem with any answer, but explain your thinking.

---

For me, it's not about 8 wins or 10 wins or 12 wins or whatever. I would like to see Pitt play in some ACC championship games. Hell, even one in the near future would be memorable. Even if we lost that game, it'd be a fun trip from a fan standpoint to go see them play a meaningful game for a conference title on a neutral site -- and it'd probably be a better opponent than whoever we'd normally see in a bowl.

Other than that, beat Penn State and WVU and Notre Dame whenever we play them. My expectations aren't that high but I also don't think they're whats holding Pitt "back" as much as we like to anamorphize our thoughts into some sort of monster.

Pitt is an 8-5 type program with a good coach. Once every 10 years we win the ACC title and play in a game like the Orange Bowl.

I expect 5 year cycles where we average about 8.5 wins and make at least 1 ACC championship appearance. I think we can certainly be better than that and average 9 wins (considering ACC CG and bowl games can give you 14 games), 2 ACC CGs, and 1 ACC CG win.

Really, your average P5 team is winning 8+ games a year, so winning 8 is having an average season. There is no reason we can't be slightly better than average. This is especially true if Pitt helps itself and doesn't, stupidly, keep scheduling teams like Iowa and Ok State OOC. If it isn't PSU, ND, or WVU, we should be piling up the easiest OOC opponents we can get.

I want an expectation that we can win every game, even if we are underdogs. I want us to crush teams that we are favored over and hang with teams that we arent. I want our non-conference schedule to be balanced so that early losses to top teams don't derail our season before it even starts (i.e. one top game is ok, others should be winnable). I want to be top 3 in the Division on an annual basis.

Tarp the upper levels of the stadium. Make attendance look better. Once attendance looks better, more recruits come. More recruits come, team gets better. Team gets better, more fans attend. Take off tarp of upper deck to account for more fans. Better recruits and more attendance, just like that.

We still aren't going to draw enough to fill 70k seats when we aren't playing rivals or (at least) top conference foes, even if we are perennial top 15. It just is not going to happen.

It is very easy to use single game tickets for the matchups we can draw more. For the rest, you tarp and sell additional sections as demand warrants it. The biggest help to recruiting and the program would be gameday experience. There are just far too many fans who have entire sets of rows to themselves. There is no way to get excited in that environment.

Me too! I'd love an ACC Championship. People used to say that the BE Hoops Tourney was "meaningless" Not to me! I loved those days when Pitt would go to the title game every year and won the title twice, playing 3-4 days in a row against top P5 teams AND ACTUALLY WIN. I cared more about that tourney than the NCAAs.

When we joined the BE for football, I thought that we would be a good football team and win lots of titles, never happened, when VT, Miami and BC where replaced Cincy, UConn and Louisville, I thought , NOW FOR SURE, championships are coming.... uh, no! For once I'd like to see Pitt win an outright conference football title.

...I think we can certainly be better than that and average 9 wins ...your average P5 team is winning 8+ games a year, so winning 8 is having an average season. There is no reason we can't be slightly better than average...

Except that you can't "average 9" if you have ONE 10 win and TWO 9 win seasons, OVER 35 YEARS.

TARPS must be the answer, they come up in every conversation as a solution! Tarp the whole stadium with tarps that have Pitt fans painted on them and just pipe in loud crowd noise the whole game! Raise the volume for big plays, then you don't have to rely of the cheap Pittsburgh people to show up!

Miami used tarps and pumped in loud crowd noise when we attended the Pitt-Miami game.

New Year's Day bowl game appearances as the norm, not something that hasn't occurred since Ronald Reagan's 1st term in office

Georgia Tech is similar in terms of average attendance (though more like a 90% full stadium than our 60% full one) and being a city based school that has a rivalry out of conference with a bigger state school. Somewhat more local talent but also more SEC teams trying to recruit it as well. They have two Orange Bowl appearances under Paul Johnson. Before PJ, Chan Gailey had five 7 win seasons in six seasons there, which was also very Pitt-like.

What I would like to see:
  • Forget about PSU
  • Only one solid OOC game per year
  • Commit ($) to the program and the coaching staff. Stop this carousel of coaches.
  • This will get us to a 9 win program and like others have said, the occasional year when we win 10+ and play in the championship game.
Lastly, get serious about winning in athletics and get creative about fundraising.

Just like a nitter to correlate wins to a 'better program'
Me, I'm a total Pitt guy! WINNING isn't everything, it's the only thing! So sick of weak ass people like you ruining our program! WINS is all that matters, or join the Ivy league.

Explain how Pitt can be a better program than Miami? They aren't, not bay any measure that matters.

Serious??

Miami is viewed as a group of thugs.

Sure, now, they are doing great again, and no issues yet. They have a seemingly good program that is better than Pitt.

You are the weak ass fan. Face it. Being positive in the face of adversity takes more strength than being a jack @ss. Sorry, that is just true.

I'd rather be viewed as THUGS and WIN.

It's so great your way, facing adversity for 4 decades.

And I wouldnt...

there, we got to the root cause of the issue

Yes, I love being a Pitt fan, and wouldnt want to be a fan of any other school. Sorry, guess I just am a loyal dude

We are an 8-9 win program with the current state of affairs (administration/coaching stability/recruiting/community support). I'd take 9 wins a year if every few years, we catch lightning and win 10 and a division title. Playing for the ACC crown every 5-7 years is about the ceiling for our program...and I'm OK with that. As long as there are no 4-8 or 5-7 years along the way. They just set you way back, IMO...

let me ask the original question a different way.

What program would you like to duplicate?

Iowa? Mich State? VA Tech? Ok State?

Who?

I would like it if PITT had only 1 loss going into Thanksgiving weekend.
