Whats the scouting report for the fighting Howlands?

Good rebounders and defenders. Why should we kill them? We don’t do either very well. We need to be red hot shooting in every game we play.
I think our only chance against practically every team in tournament is red hot shooting. I guess we can hope the other team has an off game offensively and on the glass, but Capel should have the shooting machines fired up for practice and we better be working on our strokes.

They don’t seem to be a long team so that’s good. Pitt has had trouble with teams with length. If Pitt plays their game and gets back to playing a bit better defense they should win. Key will be coming out lose They played tight since beating rhe cuse

Score 72 points Pitt will win, score 78, Pitt wins comfortably.

The game is extremely unlikely to be that high scoring. They are 334 in tempo. It is going to be a slow game. They can't shoot the ball (I think they are last in D1 in three point shooting percentage), but they hold their opponents to very low shooting percentages against them.

If we get to 72 points it will probably be a blow out win for us. We are almost certainly going to have to win a game in the 60s, maybe the low 60s.

So there's a chance. Better suit up a 3 pt shooting performance in Dayton ala Sam Young

Agree, was just reading the Miss St forum and they acknowledged they were the worst three point shooting team. Matter of rebounding.

Miss. St. in dead last in the country in 3-point shooting %, at 27.3% and a little over 5 made 3-pointers per game. We've had opponents score that many against us in 10 minutes.

I think Capel has done a great job this year turning this team around and getting them into the top 5 in the conference. But in every game we play in the NCAA's, the other team will have an advantage in coaching. I just hope we get far enough with some torrid shooting to negate the disadvantage.

Pitt’s poor defense wasn’t poor for much of the ACC season. It began more recently? Why?

Can a return to playing better defense happen for the NCAA tourney?

Opinions?

It should help that they can’t shoot well from three. Seems like they play an old Dixon style of play. As long as we aren’t completely cold from the outside we should win.

This game will come down to turnovers and rebounding. If we hold our own in these two areas, then we will win.

The only thing that matters in this particular game. Look for every one of our sets to be shut down, so we better come out shooting the hell out of it
You mean the one set we run? And Hinson won’t shoot away from the Pete. This is for sure a game that could go either way.

In short: They can't shoot. Bad offensively and very good defensively. Good offensive rebounding team too. They rely on driving to the basket and feeding their bigs.
So basically what you are saying is Mississippi State is the same as many of Jamie’s Pitt NCAA teams.

I wish pitt knew how to play some 2/3 zone. Could be useful against a team like this. Oh well, we are what we are I guess.

Rebounding and defense. Defense and rebounding.
The Jamie Dixon formula for success.

Hot shooting tends to beat defense and rebounding in the NCCA Tournament as we have seen with the old Pitt Jamie Dixon teams. So I expect big games from guys like Hinson and Burton and hopefully Elliott can knock some 3’s down as well. I like the matchup and as long as Pitt doesn’t go completely cold shooting they should win this game.

Hope they don't have big guards who are athletic. I know they have some length. If they are rated 6th in defensive efficiency, it could look like the Duke game, at least for our offense. We need to be able to get some open 3s, not forced ones at the end of the shot clock. I guess we will see...

They are horrible from the free throw line as well. High 60s% for the season

They rank 363 out of 363 in 3 point shooting, which is great for us. Now, when I saw that, I figured they must be a great rebounding and defending team and apparently they are. That said, offense wins in March. This game will come down to how well Pitt shoots. If we shoot well, we win. If we don't, we lose. Remember my metric. If you outshoot a team by 10% from 3, you have a 75% chance to win

To simply things even more. If Fede plays well, then we win. My guess is they try to get him into foul trouble early and then keep feeding the ball to Smith.

I don't know about the metric, but in any case we have to shoot better than them, inside and outside. We also need to fight hard for every rebound, as if its the last rebound.
