Duke got their coach from Army. Duke wasn't quite the power that they are now, but they were still above where Pitt currently is.
Kansas got Bill Self from Illinois, who got him from Tulsa, who got him from Oral Roberts. Self climbed the ladder.
Roy Williams came from Kansas, who got him from the Carolina staff.
Miami got their coach from George Mason
Virginia got Tony Bennett from Washington St.
Syracuse promoted Jim Boeheim from Roy Danforth's staff.
Villanova got Jay Wright from Hofstra.
Gonzaga promoted Mark Few from Dan Monson's staff.
Tom Izzo was promoted from Jud Heathcoate's staff.
Indiana got Tom Crean from Marquette, who got him from Tom Izzo's staff at MSU.
Maryland got Mark Turgeon from Texas A&M, who got him from Wichita St.
ND got Mike Brey from Delaware.
Texas A&M got Billy Kennedy from Murray St.
Oregon got Dana Altman from Creighton.
Oklahoma got Lon Kruger from UNLV, after he'd been in the NBA, as well as at Illinois, Florida, and Kansas St.
Iowa St got Steve Prohm from Murray St.
Wisconsin promoted Greg Gard from Bo Ryan's staff.

Some of these programs are well above Pitt, and some are not. The coaches came from a wide range of places. Some were "splash hires", and some were far from that.

I get you're point and agree. But this board expects a splash hire the likes of John Wooden.

Well, when there is zero effort to stop the best coach in school history from walking out the door, the expectations are going to VERY high.

What was Barnes supposed to do? Chain Jamie's leg to the south basket of the Pete and not let him leave?

Jamie *WANTED* to leave. Barnes could've kept the buyout at the high level and held Jamie hostage, forcing Jamie to coach at a place he didn't want to be...... which would've been a disaster.

Or....

Barnes could lower the buyout so that Jamie could do what he wants to do.... leave.... and then Barnes would have to get a new coach.

When an employee doesn't want to be an employee anymore, and you force him to stay, you get substandard work product. It's bad business to retain a guy against his will.

Barnes said he made no effort to bring him on board with his vision. He let him go. No effort. This is not in dispute. Are you under the impression that Barnes tried to influence him to stay? Are you under the impression that ADs cannot and should not try to keep coaches from being poached?

That's not what Barnes said. Barnes said that they wanted to keep Jamie, but it became clear in talking with Jamie Friday and Saturday that Jamie's heart wasn't in staying at Pitt. At *THAT* point, it was clear to Barnes that he was either going to have to make it possible for Jamie to leave by lowering the buyout, or forcing him to stay against his will by keeping the buyout high.

Barnes decided to let him do what he wished.... leave.

Jamie wanted out of the marriage... so Barnes granted him a divorce. It would've been counterproductive for all parties if Barnes would've held Jamie hostage.

You are wrong. Once Jamie told Barnes he was leaving, that's it. Jamie was at Pitt for 17 total years. You don't tell someone you want to leave when you have flirted with that several times before and decided to stay. There are no more raises to be given nor extensions to be granted. He was under contract until 2023 for a lot of money. They had numerous conversations....Jamie got burned out at Pitt. It happens with almost every coach. He chose to leave. No way you can pin that on Barnes.

He gladly would have had Jamie back, but changes had to be made. Jamie was trending downward. It kills me to say that. Find a bad word I have said about Jamie on this site. You won't. The truth hurts sometimes.
