DiPaola said he played FS at practice yesterday. It was beyond frustrating to watch Terrish Webb get torched last year while Whitehead was basically deployed as an extra run-stopping linebacker.

Whitehead may be the best athlete on the team. We need him to cover.

It probably doesn't mean much. Narduzzi said he wants guys to be able to play multiple positions, so that he can get the best players on the field in case of injury. He's been trying Brightwell at MLB, so that if injury occurs, he has him as an option in the middle. That doesn't mean the Brightwell is moving there permanently, nor would I think that Whitehead is moving to the other safety.

I sure don't want to see Briggs playing free or strong safety. Maybe they have a young guy to put in at strong safety... Campbell, Miller , Stocker.

The young guy who will be starting at free safety is Paris Ford. He will be learning the position as part of on the job training. Whitehead will be back at strong safety and lead the team in tackles. I have been saying for a while that the secondary will not be a weakness this year. If we can find a pass rushing end or two, none of you will even recognize this defense, when compared to last year's performance

You could very well be right . Strange things like injuries happen sometimes, however, as was the case with Hamlin last year.

Hamlin, Hendrix, Zeiss, Whitehead... the defense was plagued by injuries where players missed multiple games last year.

I would've liked whitehead at free safety when healthy last season. I still do like him there, but I'm totally fine with leaving him at strong safety IF Paris ford is gonna start at free safety as a freshman.

We have more better athletes and better depth overall. That said, Whitehead and Ford will be our best athletes and overall the defense will be younger. Therefore, I do agree with you, we must stay in good health, especially our two safeties who are major difference makers.

We need our best cover-safety at FS, I mean that only makes sense. Was Webb better in coverage than Whitehead? We needed Whitehead's coverage skills not his tackling ladt last season.

Exactly why I thought whitehead should've been the free safety last year. I'm not at practice, maybe whitehead personally is just better at strong safety and Webb the others were even worse at strong safety. But the free safety position killed us and I too thought at the very least whitehead could not have been any worse in coverage than the guys we saw last year.

Whitehead is better in run support than in coverage. He would have been a better FS than Terrish Webb, but then we'd have had Mitchell or some other scrub playing SS and missing tackles all day instead. Whitehead is a perfect fit at SS (or HB) but I'm not sure he'd be that great as a FS.

That was true of Whitehead in 2015, not last year. Whitehead was asked to cover more last year and was not nearly as involved in the run stopping. He struggled with it, by appearances it was not related to ability, but was more about knowing his responsibilities, the switches, communicating switches to the other DBs, etc.--the mental part of the job. That is not to say he can't and won't learn the position, but he had a tough time with coverage last year.

Coaches will sort this all out. But yes, Whitehead is a great tackler, Webb was awful at it.

The good news is that their is a lot of talent at Safety for the first time in...forever. Whitehead, Ford, Stocker, Garner, and Campbell are all better talents than what we've been accustomed to.

I really dont understand why this message exist? Do some people just like to complain? Whitehead was LEADING the team in tackles. He was 6th in the entire NCAA when he was injured. He was PHENOMENAL at strong safety. Plus, LOOK at him! He is a bad ass MFer, a beast. Let's leave him where he can be first team all-american, and say... lets let Ford, Campbell, or any of our other stud recruits man the free safety

Alot of what you say is true, as far as what was expected of him last year. However, he realized that he was the only guy in that secondary to have real ability to make plays. The others could understand their assignments but did not have the ability to make plays( in other words, they would cover the right guy, but coulldn't stop said guy from making the catch).

Whitehead at times was trying to cover for others, and trying to anticipate plays more than reacting to what was happening. Alot of times, because of this, he came off looking bad. If everybody is healthy come the fall, the secondary will be: Ford at FS, Whitehead at SS, Hamlin at one corner, Maddox at the other. Each of these guys, should be able to handle their assignments, and more importantly, as the best athletes on the team, have the ability to make plays.

Whitehead was great his FR year. Last year he struggled mightily trying to take on a bigger role. The tackles were there because the rest of the unit stunk and that is his strength. We need other folks to step up, but Whitehead really needs to improve his knowledge and basics against the pass for the defense to really improve.

If this D is to improve the way we all believe it can JW will not be our leading tackler this year. And JW will be our SS most situations but he will know both Safety positions & also have some sense of what he would do at Corner if need be.

H2 PITT !!!

Even Whitehead himself admitted recently that he had a down year last year.

Brightwell is a little light in the shorts for MLB imo....unless he bulked up in the offseason. I like the athleticism, doubt that position will be the best fit for him. We'll see...

Can we convert one or two of these guys to CB this year. We were so weak at that spot I was going to send my wife out to play the position. She's small but she's slow so she would have fit in with the rest of the PITT corners. But she tackles better than they did!

While there was no question that JW did not compete game in & game out like he did his Frosh year. He still managed to raise his level of play in a few games & on a few occasions to remind us all how brilliant his play could be.....the way he took over the last 2 minutes of the UVA game's 1st Half & finished it off w/ a Int. taken back to the House to change the entire complexion of that game. JW had other hard hitting moments, big plays but just not as impressive as he displayed his Frosh year.

From what I can gather watching this defensive scheme the past 2 yrs:
- The SS might as well be listed as a LB
- The FS must be able to cover the middle of the field well
- The CBs will get no help on sideline fades, no matter who the safeties are. None. The SS has other responsibilities, and the FS can't get there in time unless he simply has a knack for diagnosing plays well ahead of the average human being.

This defense got crushed because it couldn't stop the fade.. If it did even average against the fade, it would have been a flat-out good defense instead of pathetic.

It doesn't matter how much pressure DEs can provide when the QB is taking 3 steps and lofting it deep.

The bottom line is - the defense will go as far as the CBs take them, and unfortunately nothing leads me to believe they will be markedly improved from last year, even though I'm on record as saying I like Maddox a lot and think he may make a fine NFL nickel DB.

The amount of tackles that Webb missed last year that lead to huge plays was crazy. Having a better tackler in that role like Whitehead (as kind've a last line of defense, coverage guy) would've made sense. I vote Campbell at SS.

Remember that Narduzzi singled Whitehead out a couple of times in post game pressers during the season for failing to communicate in coverage. He clearly had his struggles.

One thing is for sure, Webb was god awful in all phases. Hard to believe we didn't have someone more capable to run out at FS.

Agree with most of this. I will say that you are correct on fades. Our guys will be out on the

You are correct about the fades, our guys will be out on the island alone and must improve there. Getting bigger guys in like Hamlin will help but Maddox being smaller has got to do better, but I like him as well.

As for Whitehead, his responsibilities will vary from game to game and his keys will change. For instance, against OK St., he will undoubtedly be called on to help in pass coverage. Against the Pedophiles, he will be more involved in the run game and trying to keep Barkley in check, in fact, I can see him locked on Barkley alot of the time. Obviously, formations will dictate where he lines up, but Barkley will be a priority for him alot of the game.

I trust Whitehead to come through, and despite Ford being a true freshmen, I trust him as well. Sure he will make some mistakes, but having seen this kid play in many highschool games against some good teams, he has the instincts to diagnose plays quickly and closing speed to make up for mistakes. These two were made to be tandem safeties, and I can't wait to see the improvement of our defense because of their efforts.
