During the last few minutes of the UVA-UM game, with UVA trying to make a comeback down 9, UVA had 3rd down and goal from the 4. UVA passed into the end zone for a TD, but offensive pass interference was called. The onfield ACC officials gave the decline signal to the UM sideline and held up the first (meaning 4th down) waiting for the UM decision concerning the penalty.
If you decline the penalty, the TD counts, right?????? Well the UM coach declined the penalty AND the refs placed the ball on the 4th and said 4th down. Wait a minute--you can't disregard the TD!!!
The UVA bench went ballistic saying if you decline the penalty the TD COUNTS!! (which is correct)
Finally in a quick flurry the refs re-asked the UM sideline and they TOOK the penalty, ball marked back to the 19th and replayed 3rd down.
What a couple of minutes of complete stupidity by both the UM coach and the onfield ACC officials.
