My first thought was Paul Pasqualoni when UConn hired him. But, Paul had a winning conference record and won the Big East 4 or 5 times with several BCS level bowl appearances (equivalent ot Final Four or Elite 8).

Tuberville? Nope. He had a winning conference record in a very tough conference and won his division 4 times.

Paul Rhodes? Maybe. He had a losing conference record in the Big 12. Best finish was third in his division.

if barnes is still around frank solich is our next football coach.

Solich has a winning record overall and within conference at both Nebraska and Ohio and had some pretty nice successes and bowl games at both schools, finishing as high as #2 in 1999. He would have been an unacceptable hire for Pitt football, but still better than the Stallings hire.

If they didn't have the season they just had....and he wasn't local....I would say Iowa's Kirk Ferrentz, off the top of my head.

And had we kept Wanny and let him languish at 6-6 or 7-5 for five more seasons, he'd have fit the description for everyone else.

Tom Bradley. Oops, Bradley was never a head coach. I could have sworn that Cook said he was.

Wanny had a winning conference record. Stallings does not.

Paul Chryst. A neat choice...

23-19 to be exact. Course we can only guess what it would have been had he stayed five more years.

Point is, I could see the fan base of a school like say, Ucla, having a revolt if he were hired.

The old (real old) timers may remember Carl Depasqua.

Nobody wanted the Pitt football job in the late 60's...and it fell into Carls (former Pitt player's) lap.

Since it appears a number of candidates said no to Pitt.....I hereby nominate Depasqua.

Will Muschamp

Had a winning conference record in the toughest conference and actually finished first in his division one year.

Since you mention Mushchamp, that brings up Ron Zook who had a losing conference record in the Big Ten at Illinois. Hiring him would be very comparable to Stallings.

Leavitt built Usf from scratch, so I don't think he compares.
I suppose maybe if you consider his less than charming personality.

As for Muschamp, he wasn't at Florida long enough to really compare, though I wouldn't want him either.
Wonder what the reaction in South Carolina was to his hiring.

i would say the equivalent was Nebraska hiring Mike Riley from Oregon St. Long tenure at previous school and new school was expecting bigger hire.

I would say James Franklin, but Franklin never really won anything before so I will say someone like willingham?

I would say that's an almost perfect example, especially considering that Bo Peilini was pretty popular over there, despite his less than stellar personality.

Mike Riley is the near perfect example. Good thinking. Congrats, you win.

He had a losing conference record after 14 years at Oregon State. He never won the conference. Went to a bowl game (aka had a winning record) only 8 of the 14 seasons. Never finished higher than 18th in the rankings. Even Wanny managed to finish 15th one year.

Nebraska hiring him was a huge WTF moment. They went from 8 straight bowl games under moderately successful Bo Pelini to a 5-6 season under Riley.

I think Pitt basketball is in for a similar fate with Stallings. It might even be worse because Riley went from a place with fewer resources in Oregon State to a school with more resources in Nebraska. Stalling is going form having more financial resources to less. Should be interesting. But by then some fans will blame other fans for not giving him a chance.
