Why does the PIAA play state championships during the school day?

Cumberland and Lancaster are the fastest-growing counties in the state. The whole Harrisburg/Lancaster area is basically becoming an exurb of Philadelphia.
Not just Philly but also Baltimore and DC. I know many people who moved here because they can work remote but still travel into the city a few times a week. The cost of living makes it a very attractive place to live.

You play at Hershey. It's a destination unique to PA. You have the park, chocolate world and plenty of hotels/resorts. The venue is old but historic. It's ridiculous to play in a high school when that venue is available. You don't take low bid in this situation. You rob the kids of a unique experience.
I think Hershey Corp was greedy. I imagine many of the people who attended the game also went to the park and other Hershey owned attractions.

My dad commuted from the Harrisburg area to the DC suburbs for years. There are people who commute by the Amtrak every day from Harrisburg to Philadelphia or vice versa. It’s not really too different than someone who lives in somewhere like Weirton and commutes to Pittsburgh for work.

How do you know CV wasn't low bid with a kickback? It is next door to PIAA HQ.

Parking. Last night they probably had close to 6000 people at the game. There is simply not enough parking to overlap the game that closely. I agree they should all be played outside the school day. That why Hershey Stadium was a better venue because they have plenty of parking.
It’s the PIAA. They do things backasswords

yet you want kids to travel from Mt. Lebanon to State College on a Friday night?

They are traveling to Cumberland Valley for a weekday afternoon game currently. Maybe next year, they can eliminate weekend games altogether and do 1 game per week at noon Monday through Friday.

They’ve always played at least one of the games on Friday afternoon, even when they were in Hershey.

I don't know if Bucknell has the parking but the stadium size and amenities are really nice.

3.5 hours from PGH
2.5 hours from PHILLY

Wow, just googled it. Didnt realize Bucknell had such a nice stadium. They should absolutely play it there over a HS nobody ever heard of. At least its a D1 school.

Bingo. PA is the only major football playing state that plays its championships at a high school. They shouldn't aim to be like Maine. What a rip-off for the players. You made the state championship: your reward: A 2PM game during a school day at a high school you never heard of

Don't the D2 (Shippensburg, Millersville, Lock Haven, IUP, maybe others are centrally located) and FCS (Bucknell, St. Francis) teams have dreams of still playing playoff games this time of year, which could be home games under the D2 and FCS playoff format?

I don’t believe that Bucknell bid on the state championships.

I'm having a message board geniuses SMF moment ... how about playing state championships at the Altoona Curve's baseball stadium?

Yeah, well someone should have forced them to. Just to appease SMF.

There shouldn't be a bid process. The PIAA should identify the best venue for the players and fans alike. If PSU charges you an amount that forces you into insolvency, you then go to Bucknell or a PSAC school and tell them what you need. They would host it. They are in the business of bringing PA HS students to campus. They didnt bid because they knew they didn't have a realistic shot. I would imagine they werent even notified of the bid process.

Certainly better than a HS but its too far east. The 1st rule should be: no high school. After that, I am good with whatever.

Don’t they play the state baseball championships at Penn State’s stadium? It’s pretty nice.

If Altoona is too far east, what does that make Hershey and State College and almost all the other places that they've played the games?

I'd be ok with the Curve. Just saying what those morons would be thinking. Hershey is too far east but its a historic stadium in a "touristy" town. PSU is far from civilization but its somewhat equidistant and the venue their erector set is iconic

Bucknell hosts the state swimming championships. Parking would probably be a nightmare for state football championships.

They sometimes sell out their 4000 seat basketball arena on weeknights. I am sure there is enough parking for a HS football game on a weekend attended by 5000-6000 if that.

Altoona isn't in eastern pa. It's pretty much in the central part of the state east to west. Don't know if the field could be converted easily or not and it's a grass field. I think they use to play the games in Altoona at their hs field

Mansion Park has turf. It’s where their HS team plays, but it’s in a park sort of deal in the city. The problem with their bid for the football championships was that they don’t have enough on-site parking and they would have had to do a shuttle bus type of deal.

It’s also further away from the state’s population centers. It’s closer to the geographic center of the state, but there aren’t too many teams north of I-80 who play in the state title game. I would also argue that CV is just a nicer facility overall.

Unless you mean baseball - they play that at Penn State’s facility, which is very nice. That’s also where they have some of the spring championships - softball and lacrosse, and maybe one or two others. Track and field has been at Shippensburg forever.

They play the PA high school lacrosse championships at the PSU baseball stadium?

Ohio played all of their championships games (7) this year in Canton. They played on Thursday night, and then Friday and Saturday day and night.

Florida has 9 divisions, and plays half the championship games in Tallahassee and half in Fort Lauderdale.

Did Cumberland Valley have school yesterday and today? How can you hold class when your campus is being overrun by state football playoffs? That could be a problem for colleges too. Most schools are still in session.

Do you always have an opinion of things of which you have no idea? CV is in the heart of the fastest growing county in Pa. Really, you need to understand things before you comment.Your references to hedging, ball screening ,etc are hilarious in the fact that they show that you know nothing about which you are posting.
No kid dreams of playing a state championship at CV. But every kid that plays football, wrestles, plays soccer or volleyball dream of going to Hershey. Granted after 5-10 years of not hosting, no kid will care. But right now, they want to hold that Hershey bar up, take a selfie and then experience the whole thing Hershey.

Seems to me that a school that gets that much public funding should be a bit more accommodating.

I tease about the field but they tend to make a really big deal about the playing surface. Like it's hallowed ground or something. Yeah, it will get beat up but it's not like they don't have a very large and well funded field turf program.
It’s a good experience for the kids to go to state college and play the PIAA baseball championship in that stadium. I don’t know if that’s Penn St’s or the minor league team.

They play the PA high school lacrosse championships at the PSU baseball stadium?
No, they play them at Penn State’s lacrosse field. Wasn’t clear. I think the only state championships that PSU hosts are baseball, softball, and lacrosse.

Man you are showing your ignorance. Cumberland county was the fastest growing county in the last census gaining 12.2% and added 28,133 people which is more than Allegheny county gained. Most of western PA counties like Westmoreland lost population. The entire Pittsburgh metropolitan area lost 2,733 people. The Harrisburg-Carlisle, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area is the 98th largest in the United States. The Combined Statistical Area is the 43rd largest in the United State. As far as three hours from nowhere...Baltimore is 1,5 hours away, Philadelphia and Washington DC is 2 hours away.
Yep. I was in Bethesda with my club team for a morning game and made a short drive to Hershey for a HS championship in the afternoon. Afterward made it back to Bethesda in time for another. The commute didn’t feel any different than a typical work commute.

Its just stupid. They chose profit over the kids. Its tradition to play in Hershey. To throw Hershey kisses on the field. To use slogans such as "the road to Hershey," etc. It is a failure for everyone involved that these games are played at a high school, and playing them during a school day is just icing on the cake. That assures 0 support from the local population who may want to take in the game. I saw a pic of the Westinghouse game today and there werent 100 people there. Now it was of pre-game so I'm sure there were many more people than that but my guess is the game drew less than 1000.

I’m with you. But the PIAA, under Bob Lombardi’s leadership, doesn’t always think about the athletes.
