Why is Maryland good?

Their recruiting has been better than ours for a long time. At least since Narduzzi has been here. But this is a Pitt board, so good luck finding anyone to acknowledge how advantageous being in the Coastal has been, vs being in a division with Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Michigan State.

How many guys have the Steelers drafted from Maryland? Five recently. But also guys like Chad Scott, Neil O'Donnell, etc.

Maryland is Pitt if the WPIAL was as good as it used to be.

Little Tua was supposedly offered $1.5M by an SEC team. Every time I watch him play he's either doing something fantastic or something absolutely maddening. I barely watched any of the game today, but I saw him throw a really costly pick and then mismanageme the living hell out of the clock at the end of the first half. That's ten points he cost them right there. And that 4th and 3 call just now... man, is Cignetti calling plays in on the bye week?

SMF started the post when Maryland was leading. Now they are just Maryland again. I dont give a crap about any team but Pitt.
That's why I usually don't make posts early in a game,
or for that matter, during a game. So often things change,
and the early comments end up looking foolish.

I grew up in that area. There is a lot of talent but they all go to B1G schools. College Park has always been and always will be a basketball school.

Maryland actually doesn't look all that good to me.

I was going to say the same thing.

So far this year Maryland has beaten Towson, Charlotte, Virginia, Michigan State and Indiana. There isn't anything even close to an average team on that list. They played one good team, today, and they lost by three touchdowns.

Fortunately for them, their next two games are Illinois and Northwestern, so they could be 7-1 in a couple weeks. And then Penn State will beat them by three or four touchdowns. But after that they get Nebraska and Rutgers sandwiched around the beatdown that Michigan is going to give them. So they could realistically end up 9-3 without beating any of the top 50-60 or even 70 teams in the country.

So the simple answer to the question, why are they good, is that they aren't, but if you don't pay attention to them you might think that they are.

Maryland=Syracuse=Rutgers

Beat up on poor opposition early in the season then hold on for dear life during conference play to become bowl eligible. Although as Joe mentioned the bottom of the BIG is much worse than usual this year so Maryland could possibly win 8-9 games.

A few years ago, the DMV had one of the higher per capita of blue chippers of anywhere in the country. The sheer amount of high end individual talent is crazy.

Dont they all leave though? You know, the kids want to go away to college excuse that we use for all the WPIAL kids we don't get.

So in your pea sized brain, only 3 quarters in football?

No. I dont need all 4 quarters to tell if a team is good or not. Maryland fell apart in the 4th but Locksley took over a dead program and turned them into possibly the #4 team in the Big Ten. That's really impressive. Meanwhile, Narduzzi took an 11-2 team and may turn them into 1-11

1) Narduzzi built Pitt into an 11 win team and ACC champion. He didn’t inherit a title team and tear it down.

2) Maryland is 0-32 vs ranked teams since joining the B1G

3) They gave up 27 unanswered points today and lost by 20. Advice to you: watch all 4 quarters before making sweeping conclusions

4) Maryland hasn’t beat a team worth anything yet and you’re predicting they’re the 4th best team in the B1G?

5) You deserve credit for some really incredible mental gymnastics.

When Fridge was there they didn't.

When Paterno put his focus on the DMV around the time of the Derrick Williams and Navorro Bowman era, that changed. Franklin has said for years that if they can't get what they want in the DMV, they can't compete in the B10 because PA doesn't produce like it used to. One of the main attractions in hiring Franklin were his ties to the DMV. He was supposed to be the coach in waiting when they hired Edsall. PSU is extremely popluar with DMV players for 20 years now.

Locksley was Fridge's best recruiter and pulled in a ton of talent for them during that time. Locks is beloved by former players and HS area coaches in that area. The thought process was he could keep most kids home. This was the main attraction in Saban hiring Locks. Saban knew the DMV was very fertile and wanted a piece of the pie.

Down 20-17 in the 4th quarter on the road vs the bluest of blue bloods.
ya know, a man of honor would just say something like, "gee' seems I was a bit off in my assessment of this team" or not say anything at all......but alas, you are you..

as it is, this "good team" was up 17-10 with 11 minutes to go in the 3rd and lost 37-17...

now, quadruple down with a response defending your initial post as they are always entertaining...

but it's the Big 10! Every week is a gauntlet!

I don’t disagree with the factual dismantling of the purported quality of a team that just got destroyed by 20 points (and this deficit was as close as it has ever come to that opponent in all its games).

But we’re hardly in position to mock them, at least they’ve WON the games against their awful opponents. And they are safely ensconced, if not in velvet, then in one of the two important conferences. We’re at the very bottom of a dead conference, and even the program we share last place with has a safe landing eventually in one of the two safe havens, whereas we’re likely heading to dismantling the program in 2031.
