Derek Dixon

-43% 3 point shooter in the EYBL this year. 43% 3 point shooter in the EYBL last year. 40% 3 point shooter in the WCAC, the toughest high school basketball league in the country. This is one of the deadliest 3 point shooters, midrange shooters, and overall shooters in all of high school basketball. Period. And is a 90% free throw shooter to go with it.

-Averaged over 15 points per game in the EYBL on one of the best teams in the EYBL that lost 1 time going into Peach Jam finals with a 3-1 assist to turnover ratio. The leading scorer on his team with a Peach Jam semi finals appearance. Repeat 1st team ALL EYBL performer

-Played on one of the best high school teams in the country last year and lost the WCAC finals. Will be a preseason Top 5 team nationally in the entire country, will be the team captain, and will be the preseason favorite for the WCAC title to cut the nets down this coming season.

Why I like him... He can shoot the lights out and can score both in the PnR, the catch and shoot, all types of ball screens, and can easily score off the bounce and has shown ability to score with either hand on the inside. He's very efficient, he can distribute with crafty passes, he can lead, and he puts points on the board in a hurry. He's not the tallest player or the most athletic player and he is going to stick around in college for a long time while other teams pray he leaves while he picks them apart. Likely 4 year player.

Player comparison: Ashton Gibbs-Pitt, Salim Stoudamire without the attitude problem, Arizona

If you are young, old, or in the middle, this is Ashton Gibbs when Pitt used to dominate

-Derek Dixon is a heavy Pitt lean

Blurbs from around the college basketball world.

From 247:

Omari Witherspoon makes his ranking debut at the No. 104 spot and I think we could have went higher on him. He has positional size and long arms to go along with the ability to create offense off the dribble for himself and others. Witherspoon committed to Pittsburgh this week." — Jenkins

From rivals

“I love Omari Witherspoon to Pitt. He’s one of those tough underrated guys who will thrive at the next level; a DC kid who plays in the grueling WCAC and dominated the Under Armour Association this summer. He finished the summer averaging 18.4 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals a game for DC Premier. He has great size at 6-foot-4 with efficient three-level scoring ability and a chip on his shoulder. Jeff Capel does well with that profile of guard.” – Jordan

The rivals rankings should be updated this month.

I think this is going to be a potential discussion point moving forward

Gibbs / Wanamaker (the winningest Pitt player of all time) vs Cummings / Dixon

You could say Knight / Page. Fields / Krauser, Krauser / Page

Cummings / Dixon is the most dangerous and it aint close.. And neither player has played 1 second of college basketball. Although the hype around Cummings has exploded...

I wouldn't count on Dixon to Pitt just yet. If Dixon becomes the clear #1 priority for UNC, that could be a concern, especially in the era of NIL. Because as of today, it looks like UNC is on the outside looking in at Braylon Mullins and Acaden Lewis. Regardless, Pitt's staff has clearly put in the most work from day one on Derek Dixon.

While I’d believe the UNC NIL is substantially larger than Pitts it doesn’t mean that someone Pitt might value more than a school like UNC does that Pitt can’t outbid them here and there .

True. And they might not be so bent on winning a bidding war when they can shop around again in the portal.

I am tired of Carolina poaching kids from us. Capel and staff have done all they could to get Dixon here. They need to do whatever it takes to land him. Carolina needs to go land the 5 stars they are used to, and stay the hell away from the players we go all in on. I hope Derek Dixon makes it Pitt next friday.

We literally have.

We have recruited him for 3 years. He's visited Pitt 4 times. We are showing up to his high school gym weekly with multiple coaches. And he's very close to Milan Brown and refers to Brown as his uncle.

North Carolina is North Carolina. They are pitching tradition and status. We are pitching family and culture. And, we should be pitching the fact that we are putting borderline top 100 guards in the NBA and players like RJ Davis is on year 5 and Elliot Cadeau looks far from an NBA player right now while Jaland Lowe does look like an NBA player right now from the development of Jeff Capel.

I cant tell you how much UNC will pay for this kid. But I dont think, in this case anyway, money will be a factor in his decision. Hubert Davis has been at North Carolina for 3 years. He hasn't put 1 kid in the NBA with all those 4 and 5 star kids that got drafted. I would be pitching that point hard. RJ Davis is a Roy Williams kid. And like I said, he's on year 5 in college basketball. Carrington, 1 and done. Lowe, probably 2 and done. And Cummings is going to be next in line. And none of these guys are 5 star guards. Champ was also a 2 and done as a 3 star.

RJ Davis is barely 6 ft tall.

Coaches can develop talent. They can't necessarily get guys in the league. You said yourself one of the big reasons you wanted Dixon is because you think he's a 4 year guy. If he comes to Pitt, do you think he's still a 4 year guy, or does Capel get in in the league within a couple of years?

That's up to Dixon to determine and his future coach to get him there. I think he is a great player with promise. He's an efficient player. But he wasn't close to averaging 20+ points per game in the EYBL. If he was more advanced as a scorer right now with his size, then maybe. I also dont think he is well rounded enough with regards to defense and rebounding. And while he is pretty elite with assist to turnover ratio, his future position should be point guard, And he's very much a combo guard right now if not closer to a shooting guard. His point guard skills need further development in my opinion. RJ Davis was I believe the top scorer or close to the top scorer in the entire EYBL at like 22-23 points per game or something close to that.

Yeah.

I'm still optimistic he chooses Pitt. But as we've seen time and time again in college athletics, when a blue blood starts to get involved, if they want a player badly enough, they usually have the clout and resources to pull it off.

Seems to me, at a school like UNC, where there is pressure to win at a high level every year, they would have a limit to how much they pony up for a player like Dixon. I would think they would go the portal route for immediate contribution. I think Dixon has a high hoop IQ & great outside shot. I don't know how much you get from him beyond that in year one. I really like him as a prospect and think he will have an outstanding college career. But then again, he doesn't set foot on campus for another year, so there's that.

Get real. Carolina doesn't poach from anybody.

If you say. They come in late quite a bit and steal players from other teams when they miss on their top target. Carolina is a storied program and indeed a bluebird, but, they haven't been ultra successful lately. In fact, they have been underperforming expectations of late. They need to pick it up or their ability to come in and snatch a recruit late might suddenly go away.

Tell me who, other than UConn, has been "ultra successful lately?"

Unc and Villanova

It’s a different level of expectations for those schools -
Duke , UNC, Kansas , Kentucky , UConn
They expect final fours and only count championships

Villanova , Arizona , Indiana , etc are that next rung down
