I posted this in the LR and got no response . Guys and gals are busy with other topics .

Has anyone experienced the invasion of wild onions in the yard this spring ?
I'm talking an alarming proportion .
If not . Can anyone explain what could be causing this ?
The only reasons I can think of are a pollen or I have frequent deer visitors that tend to graze and leave droppings .
Any help or thoughts ?
Thanks .

Edit: Ive noticed it in other yards in my area .

I usually end up with a patch or 2 but have no idea why. I usually just dig them up and patch but have heard boiling water can kill them. No idea what that does to the grass though.

Yeah , unfortunately I would need a couple of boiling caldron's to fix this mess . They are everywhere .

I just took out 15 wheelbarrel loads full of dead weeds and grass from my backyard this weekend. I threw my hands up. My yard is so bad, so beyond repair that I didn't want to get a dumptruck full of more top soil, then all the grass seed and fertilizer, only by August to have it all go to shit. It is a new property (going on the 4th year now). So I called a professional to do soil samples and come up with a plan of attack to put in a lawn.

Yeah . More and more i'm starting to think it's the deer poop that's causing it . Those over grown rats will feed on anything !
Next one to enter the yard is getting a breathalyzer then a bullet in the ass !

Just wait till you get this. It has taken over our area in the North Hills and is the most invasive weed I have ever encountered. It will find even the smallest bare patch in your yard and that's it - it reseeds itself and shows up the next year. The only way to fix it is massive amounts of Round Up which unfortunately kills everything else too.

We have a mole/vole problem. Fortunately, I get to pass this on to the new owner in June.. enting from here on out....home ownership is no fun these days, unless you're feeeeelthy rich.

My advice? Get the professional and come up with a plan but wait until the fall to plant. It is SO much easier and no need for constant watering. You plant it - fertilize it- water it down once and leave it till spring. We have close to 2 acres and have replanted many areas. Our greatest success is planting in the fall.

I know and I agree. But I mean I literally have some serious bare spots and have two dogs who use the yard as their playground. But definitely thinking along those lines.

I know - it's a total PITA. We have had years with mud holes LOL. For once we're good until we have to cut down more trees.

I've suffered the same... all of the Scott steps, lime, detaching, you name it..
I'm to the point, I think I'm just going cut the grass two time a week and bag and put in the woods..

Best advice I can give is when you do seed buy good seed. I recommend the Lesco products that you get that the authorized Lesco distributors. Avoid the crap out the box stores. If you're starting from scratch consider Turf type tall fescue, if you're overseeding I recommend the 50/50 mix Elite kbg /improved perennial rye. Lesco is the stuff the golf courses use

I have that sh!t on the edge of my property. It spread through the neighbors yard, into the woods separating our lots, and now is starting to invade the backside of my yard.

Of all the people on this board, I would have figured Carl Spackler for the one who had the best yard. Don't you use a hybrid? A cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff about it is, that you can play 36 holes on it in the afternoon, take it home and just get stoned to the bejeezus-belt that night on this stuff.

first go to fridge, get a beer, open it, drink it...relax, the onions will be gone in two weeks...also, if you have kids and hide Easter eggs these onion patches work out pretty well.

That is why I opt for vinegar. If I am going to kill all the other vegetation anyways even if I do not want to, mine as while use something that won't kill me.

I think my lawn service ignored part of the side yard. We had an old playset there. Neighbors have the same problem...we are next to a wooded greenspace, so there's a lot going on all the time. We're gone next month....escaping Allegheny county after 47 years.

Excellent, well played.

Honest to God, if you want a solution to this create an account not affiliated with Pitt, head over to BWI and ask for answers. There’s at least 3 lawn and grass experts over there that can give you sound advice. Just don’t ask what any of the old guard knew regarding Sandusky.
Yes, they aren't good for much, but this should be something legitimately in their wheelhouse. That, and advice on making ice cream or rationalization of sexual assault.

Deer don't tend to feed on onions because of the smell. Onions and garlic are cool weather plants that can grow through the winter. I would imagine the mild winter / spring that we have had allowed them to grow and flower before a lot of other weeds so they spread out in your lawn. Your best option is to dig up the clumps. If that is too much of a problem, try spreading lime on your lawn. Onions and garlic thrive in acidic soils and lime will help raise the pH.

Eat them. They're called ramps, and they're enjoyed throughout Appalachia. The taste is between onion and garlic. There are numerous ramp festivals this time of year, including one in Mount Morris later in the month.

And as another poster said, they're a springtime plant that will soon be gone.

My buddies dad was a junkie for this. Went to a festival where they made a wild leek soup.
The whole town and everyone in it smelled like a strong onion. You literally sweat out onion juice for a week after eating that!

It's onion soup on super steroids. Stuff would strip paint!!!
No vampires in that town, that's for sure!!!

Ramps are in the onion family, but they are really a wild leek. I lived in Richwood, WV for a year, and they have a ramp festival - they claim to be the first.

Ramps make one STINK for days after eating them. The people smelled horrible after the festival.

amen to this. I made mistake of buying cheap grass seed. Grass seed is grass seed, right? My little hill side was busted up so I worked on it. damn grass seed is 50% weeds. I am paying money and spending hours growing weeds only to pull them, rake up the dirt and do it all over again..

Dare I say it, Penn State Mix.
Blended for PA climate. Always got good result with it, much as I hate to say it!!
