New guidelines were announced yesterday and as always, there was a lot of gray area. It states masks MUST be worn at all times while indoors away from your home. It wasn't specific about athletes during competition. However, my son's team took those guidelines to INCLUDE athletes so they have to wear masks during all games and practices now.

Are we one step closer to moving games to my beloved Wheeling Civic Center?

Since they are all tested I seriously doubt it.

Good point. That would be the difference between them and youth athletes. So would HS basketball players and wrestlers have to compete with masks? Seems like they will.

one of our local conferences just announced it is delaying the indoor season until January 8. No practice until December 14.

No (masks) and absolutely, positively not (Wheeling).

But maybe they can finish the 2015 Pitt Gonzaga game in Wheeling?

ACC volleyball games seemed to have different rules in different places. Pitt did not play with masks on in their home games. Some visiting teams DID wear masks at FFH, and Pitt DID wear masks when they went to Notre Dame.

I do think it is possible that some localities would require masks to be worn on the court. However, it does seem that MBB would have more likelihood of securing some kind of waiver or exemption.

What about high school swimmers? Will they have to wear masks while swimming? Seems dangerous.

Wow, didn't know that. I would say, then, it appears that its possible that Pennsylvania pro and college athletes may have to wear masks.

Also, just received word that our youth basketball league is requiring the kids to wear masks while playing. It seems like you may have to start getting used to PA pro and college athletes wearing masks while competing. I guess its better than canceling seasons. But again, the NCAA should have started Feb 1 after most at-risk people have been vaccinated but not everyone is as smart as me. No need to rush in a piece of sh!t season.

Where is the evidence that shows the virus has been transmitted during athletics?

I don't know but it seems pretty likely that maskless indoor athletes would spread it more than almost anyone else.

Looks like PIAA competition will require masked-up athletes.

But there is no science or evidence behind it? We just feel like it would be a problem. How is it safe to restrict breathing while running up and down a court?

I’ve been 100% onboard with mitigation and trying to keep each other safe. But even to someone like me this seems to be a bit much.

I am 100% on board with mitigation and my take is that if we think we need athletes to wear masks during games to be safe, then the much more logical and safer alternative is simply not to hold the athletic activity in the first place.

Having said this, it seems to me that both college and pro athletic teams are doing a pretty good job managing their protocols and testing etc (not so sure about high schools). I was a little bit worried about it considering some of the baseball teams this summer, but it seems to have worked itself out.

But I'm much more concerned about fans in the seats.

That's where I'm at. It is COVID is so widespread and dangerous that you have to wear masks during basketball games, then they shouldn't be played.

But here it is. Masks required. Get used to a masked-up Pitt squad. That actually could give us a pretty good homecourt advantage. Unless of course......Wheeling?

Sometimes I hate being right as much as I am.

What if the Steelers and Eagles just say, "NOPE". Just play on. Sorry Tom. We are tested 2-3 times a week and if we test positive, they shut us down and clean the facility. All forcing them to wear masks would be is pure bravado and posturing. If I am the Rooneys, I am stepping up right now and saying wearing masks does not make sense. We test, and if we test positive, we shut it down.

And then I call on John Fetterman to a cage fight and tell him I am going to shove Tom Wolf straight up your ugly ass.

And nobody is playing in masks. Get used to being wrong, because you are sure experienced at it

This post can't get enough likes.

My daughter is playing in the state volleyball finals on Saturday. Both teams will be masked.

The Steelers got an exemption. However, NFL players have been really good in being responsible enough to not catch the virus. College athletes (though often not really their fault given their environment) are walking COVIDs so I wonder if Wolf would give them the same exception as the pro athletes.

No, the NFL players have not. Games were moved and San Fran played very short handed when that game should have been moved as well. Played because of tv and money.
