William Jeffress reclassifying

These are exciting times to be a Pitt basketball fan. We may not be ready to enter the NCAA tournament just yet and landing a 5 star commit that may be swayed by blue bloods later not withstanding, just being in and having a legitimate shot at a guy like Jeffress is huge. I knew Capel had the connections and he and the staff have put in the time, it was only a matter of time before we see the results.

Each year appears to be getting a little better. A nice finish to the conference season and at least an NIT bid will surely continue this trend. If Jeffress definitely reclasses, I think we are indeed the favorite at this point.

It is really nice to have legitimate shots at top 100 players. Sleepy and his predecessor who had checked out early, couldn't sniff what we are doing now, and we are doing it now coming off a program that was floored by these two. We have the right man in place to bring this program back and following recruiting now has really become pretty intriguing!

I think Hugley wants to be the 4

Well, if he can play he is going to be at the 5 early on at least, cause HCJC is clearly not happy with anything he is getting at the center spot with what is on the roster at this point.

The wildcard is big Max. HCJC might have finally got lucky and pulled a big man BEFORE he blew up. If he continues to progress maybe he can surprise and play the C spot early on.

But, my guess would be he will need a year to really be at the point that HCJC will roll with him for any meaningful minutes.

Actually 2pm McDowell @ Peters

Sucks that conflicts with the Pitt game. Looks like they are at Woodland Hills in the Violence Showcase on 1/19. The full name of it is the Stand Against Violence Showcase but who has time to say all that?

excited to see him play Mortan this year. wish we were getting Ethan.. that 2020 class with these two would be top 15-20

A live look at Max if interested.

He starts at the 3 next year, right?

With him and Hugley at the 5, those are huge upgrades.

Maybe he actually would start at the 3, but, then again, maybe not--especialy early in the season. Regardless, he would no doubt eventually get lots of PT--probably starters minutes even if he was coming off the bench. Initially, I would suspect he would back-up Champagnie at the 3--especially if Champagnie continues to improve--particularly at shooting the 3-ball. Later, Champagnie could become the back-up if this guy proves to be better all around (including as a defender).

IMO, probably the most important factor regarding PT would be how well he plays defense. Capel values defense highly and, IMHO, won't start a defensive liability even if if the guy is talented offensively.

Really what choice does he have , JCs team cannot beat any decent team with offense right now !

It will be interesting to see in the future when JC gets enough quality players in here what roles offensively skilled players have .

Don't think Jeffress would really play the 3 too often. BUT, this rotation in 2020, if it came to pass, can win Pitt a whole bunch of games.

PG: Xavier / Trey / ???
SG: Trey / Horton / Murphy
SF: Champagnie / Toney / Drumgoole
PF: Jeffress / Collier / Coulibaly / Hugley / Champagnie / Toney
C: Brown / Hugley / Amadasun

I don't see Jeffress as a classic 4. But I don't think Capel thinks in those terms anyway.

Were you the one with ties to Morton?

Somebody on the free board said we didn’t recruit him that hard... is that true? Because I think that’s the only time I read that and don’t think it’s true.

No arguments there. I should have listed them as 1-5, but thought the traditional position titles looked better in this format.

Point is, Capel seems to be building two different rosters, with the hinge point being that 4 position. We've got one or two bigger, more rugged guys who can play the 4 in Coulibaly and Hugley; we've got one (potentially two?) longer stretch-4 types in Collier and potentially Jeffress; and then two wings who we've seen have success playing the 4 in small ball lineups in Champagnie and Toney.

C:

we badly need another point guard. Trey is not the answer. I think Capel realizes this. If Johnson leaves, That could be disastrous.

I dont think JC cares if he has a C on this team or not, he will play the best players regardless of position, heck we run 4 guard sets, the best players regardless of position will be on the court
Generally speaking ... I agree.

I hope it wasn’t the site that had Johnson being drafted in the NBA.

It is but they took Johnson out of their mocks. From late 1st/early 2nd this year down to not even being drafted after his senior year. And I'd agree. Even with moderate improvement, his last 2 years, I dont see him making the NBA.

IMO I think X with 2yrs left can make it to the NBA. If he matures and realize that making people around him better is a trait that will get him there. Him doing that will make us a way better team and in return he will get a lot of that credit to get seen again as a NBA Prospect again.

I don’t disagree. I was more poking fun of the site that predicted he was a 2-and-done caliber player. He definitely has a chance to be an outstanding 4-year ACC point guard.
