The most overrated position in all of sports. If I was S&C coach for any football or basketball team, they'd have the exact same record.
One of key components to the transition of Willard to Howland was installing a work ethic and attitude change. Guys blowing off workouts and doing “other things” to where they were working their butts off set the tone for the program turning around.

So why does Alabama football pay their guy over a million bucks? Why not just pay SMF $50,000 and save themselves a lot of money?
Because they arent allowed to pay the players and they have to spend the money on something, which is why they have an army of "advisers." They cant save the money. It has to be spent.

College S&C positions are actually, in many cases, better jobs than in the pros. At the pro level, every player is paying their own personal coach for individual attention, and that coach would follow the player after a trade, demotion, etc. The NFL team's S&C staff is probably mostly focused on injury rehabs, rookies, etc.

The lead S&C coach for a FBS school is arguably the top of the career path.

And responsible for players being the fittest possible at their position and having reduction in injuries. Not to mention collaboration with nutrition. The S&C coach sees the players more than coaches do. They are also strengthening the minds of the players. Look at the weight of the players as freshman and look at their bodies. They become 10x the athlete thanks to a quality S&C coach.

In some ways, the S&C staff is more important than ever, now that we have the transfer portal. A guy might be willing to sit on the bench all year if he's actually seeing progress in the weight room and trusts the staff that there is a long-term plan. If a guy is not playing AND not improving, why would he ever stay?

Another aspect of S&C is fatigue management. Given that Capel's teams collapsed each February, that was probably not a great sign for the last guy. (I actually thought Gary C. seemed like a pretty decent S&C coach all things considered.)

Somehow I missed this story:

This is a very very odd lawsuit. It is customary for a new coach to hire their own S&C coaches. I highly doubt Pitt or Coach White discriminated against him because he was white.

Well, Christopher is gone?

Some of his complaints were specific to Christopher.

Wonder why Capel kept Christopher?
