Woman's game tonight...

Watched some of the game on ACCN.

Team started out bad , 5pts in 2nd qtr, played better in 2nd half but still lost.

I'm not too sure about this Coach White. He may go winless in conference.

White has a big job in front of him.

I think Coach White will be fine. Right now he's playing with freshman. Tonight
his best player Bugg, sat out with an injury.
They make a lot of mistakes with so many freshmen on the floor, but I can
see the talent. They made a great comeback in the second half. They can't
seem to sustain it or put two halves together.
The past two losses were to teams with talent and experience.

Unfortunately not enough upperclassmen help. Women's basketball is different they don't leave early to go to the wnba. You're playing against seniors most games. If you want to play 6 freshman major minutes they're going to struggle unless they're 5 star. It will be hard to beat many mid majors. To many turnovers. I know Knight doesn't score but the ball moved better in my opinion and no Buggs hurt.

I’ll bet Coach White will never again put himself in position of needing to start a freshman PG. Harris is going to be good, but not this season. Turnovers and forced-shots galore.

I think Coach White is having them play like he wants his team two years from now to play. But with 4 freshman on the floor so much, trying to play very fast just leads to way too many poor passes and bad shots.

We may not win another game. I was seriously worried that we were going to get shutout in the second quarter — but we managed a few points at the end....

There are some brief bright spots and reason for hope. Green showed tonight that she can score from outside and on drives. Hayford displayed some good offensive moves. Rita is awkward, but then scores a couple buckets that show promise, and she’s already a presence defensively. AB is a scrapper - not a good shooter but will score in double figures just from cleaning stuff up.

Going to be a very long year though. I hope despite all the losses the team can stay positive and look at this season like prep for the future.

Go Pitt.

BTW, Aysia Bugg had a splint on a couple fingers of her left hand. Said she’ll be fine.

Go Pitt.

The interesting thing is that they generally seem to play better, sometimes like tonight much better, in the second half.

Is that because once they get behind they stop feeling pressure and just go out and play? Is it that the coaches are making good adjustments at half time? Is it just happenstance? I don't know, but I'd guess a little of all three.

They played much harder on defense in the second half tonight. That and Gabby Green's three point shooting got them back in the game. Now they have to figure out how to stop falling so far behind in the first place

Good post and good questions.I'm not sure of the reasons either, but one thing
I am sure of is they're freshman. They have some talent and it sometimes
shows like in the second half tonight, same as last game. Unfortunately
the talent is inexperienced, and they in turn play like the freshmen that
they are. These are better players than what was here the last few
years IMO.
Lemarc and Nelson will help a little. Unfortunately they're not the
quick athletic types that seem to be the type of player White is looking
to build the program around. He obviously wants to speed the play
up. It works some of the time, but also causes us in turn to make
errors and turnovers. Harris has talent, but is not yet ready for
the college game. She's a turnover machine, but the potential is
obviously there.

Good point about women players staying for all four years. You could see
the difference in inexperience tonight and in the game against Stony Brook.

The women’s team tends to steadily fall behind in the first half due to scoring droughts. The droughts come from copious turnovers and attempting difficult shots.

The better playing has come in the second half when, out of desperation, the team plays defense with more urgency and uses some pressure and trapping. They are athletic, so the pressure leads to steals and easier baskets...

Pitt also seems to struggle shutting down the oppositions good shooters. Tonight Miami’s guard Scott was knocking down 3s at a high rate in warm-ups and I thought she was going to be trouble. She scored 24 or so...

Miami was something like 10 of 24 from 3 and they all seemed like pretty open shots created by good passing.

Go Pitt.

One thing I notice with the opposition hitting threes with "good passing."
The opposition gets out of the double team and hits the open player for
an open three. Why?...because we don't know how to rotate back to the
ball. That's a hard thing to teach and learn, and is often the weak link
in a team's double team.
Of course we're freshman playing against experienced upper class
players. That was very obvious in the Georgetown, Stony Brook and
Miami games. We seem to play an initial strong D, but then it breaks
down to a team that patiently executes.
I feel all of this is a result of our playing freshmen who are inexperienced
at this level. IMO it is not a talent issue.

This girl would have been nice to have around, although she would be graduated already. When she transferred, that was the big red flag the Suzie era wasn't going to work.

Totally agree. Wise, Bugg, Whitney, and Gribble would have been seniors. Middle of the pack acc team and ncaa tournament bid. Oh well, have to move on. Have to explore maybe moving Harris to the two guard position or off the ball more. Do we know what happened with Whitney?

True, but we got beat by a freshman tonight.Scott basically was the difference in the game.Slow starts are also an issue.

A freshman did have 24 pts., but I don't believe she won the game for them.
There was a lot more that won the game for them. Dickesron a senior controlled
the backcourt and had 13 pts. She continually beat our press and double team
at the end of the game when we got close.
Kleusner, also a sr. had 16 pts and controlled the inside on both ends of the floor with 10 rebounds (a double/double) and had four blocked shots. Hoff a redshirt jr. and Esbrand another jr both were also in double figures. Sorry, but we were beaten by an experienced team with seniors and juniors and one freshman who was one of four players in double figures..

Question....I noticed during timeouts that the Asst coach, former Marquette coach, was leading the huddle and drawing up the plays.

I know some assistants do draw up plays on teams, but White seemed more like the Asst and not the HC.

Is that normal with this team? Last night was the first game I paid attention.

I don't know if it's "normal" or not, but I've seen it before with other coaches.
I look at it this way.....Coach White delegates certain responsibilities to his
assistants as do all coaches, Apparently he feels it best to delegate this
to an assistant. Why?...I have no idea. Maybe it's a strength he sees in
his assistant.

I just wasn't sure if it was a regular or rare occurrence with this team.

Ok. I only see them on tv, so it's hard for me to tell. Maybe some of the
posters on here who actually attend the games can see and let you know
through a post.

White generally leads the huddle, but there are times when Mitchell has a lot to say. I get the impression that what happens is that when Mitchell has something to say White lets her say it herself rather than telling the team what she wanted. Mitchell has a ton of head coaching experience, and I think that as a first time head coach White leans on her a good deal.

That makes sense.

Well there are a few of the ladies who look to be carrying too many lbs for playing hoops. But, it is not all or even the majority of them, IMO.
Aaron Gray similar type of transformation will be needed for the center.

The PG reminds me of Fields body type, so she may be fine.

Notably, the freshmen are not in the category of carrying too much weight. The freshmen are lean and athletic - Harris is an outlier, but the body-type comparison to Fields is on target.

Next season there will be 8 athletic freshmen and sophomores, plus JUCO Green, who will play the major minutes and be the core of this team.

Go Pitt.
