Second ACC win of the season, both on the road. Clemson still has not won an ACC game.
Pitt jumped out to a big early lead and then as is typical they stopped scoring and let Clemson right back into it. Pitt went from 17-8 ahead to 20-18 behind from late in the first to early in the second. Clemson scored the last seven of the first half to take a six point lead, and then scored the first two baskets of the second half to take a 10 point lead. They then proceeded to only score four more points the rest of the quarter (and two of them were foul shots with two seconds left in the quarter). The lead went back and forth in the fourth quarter, Pitt's biggest lead was four and Clemson's biggest lead was three. Clemson made a basket with three minutes left to take a 56-53 lead, and then didn't score again the rest of the game. Brenna Wise made three of four from the line to tie it, then Stasha Carey made a basket with 16 seconds left to give Pitt the lead for good. Carey blocked a Clemson layup attempt with seven seconds left and the ball went out of bound to Pitt (after about a five minute video review). Wise was fouled on the inbounds and made one of two and then Clemson missed a desperation three at the buzzer.
Pitt had their typical 11 turnovers in the first half, but then only had four more in the second half. Clemson got 14 points off Pitt turnovers in the first half but only four in the second half. Interestingly SM-S took Aysia Bugg out of the game late in the 3rd quarter in favor of Brittany Gordon (who had not played until that point) and then left Gordon in most of the rest of the game.
Fred Potvin led Pitt with 15 points on 5-7 from three. Carey had 13 points, 11 rebounds and 5 blocks.
