Free throws, they mean nothing if they would have hit a few more threes earlier in the game.
Actually if you were there or were following along, today's game kind of proved that to be true. In the first 39 minutes, 59.7 seconds Pitt shot exactly TWO foul shots. And they had only made one of them. Pitt was almost able to beat a better team essentially without even shooting foul shots at all. And on a day that they really did not play well at all. One wonders how Pitt could have possibly been in a game like today's when the spent almost 40 minutes getting absolutely nothing out of the part of the game that some people seem to think is just about the most important part.
Pitt missed a foul shot at the 8:33 mark of the first quarter. An and one attempt by Yacine Diop. The next time Pitt even shot a foul shot was at the 5:33 mark of the fourth quarter. That's exactly 33 minutes between foul shots. Man, the guys on her who bitch about the refs all the time whether they are making calls against Pitt or not would have been apoplectic.
And for the record, on the post game show SM-S was pissed about the disparity in foul shots. Her comment was something along the lines of we took the ball inside just like they did and we made the same kinds of plays inside that they did and yet we never got any calls and they did.
On the other hand, Pitt missed their first 7 threes. They didn't make one until the end of the 2nd quarter when Fred Potvin came off the bench and hit one the first time she touched the ball and then hit another a minute or so later. Pitt ended up 6-21 on threes, 3-13 by everyone other than Potvin. And what missing all those threes, most of which were wide open, did was it allowed NC State to switch to a zone after Pitt jumped out to a big early lead, and then keep packing that zone in deeper and deeper to try to take away Stasha Carey and Kalista Walters on the inside. Pitt was leading 14-5 half way through the first quarter, which was right around when NC State switched to a zone, and then NC State went on a 23-4 run over the next 12 minutes or so, because Pitt could just not hit a shot. So yeah, on a day when Pitt shot 39% overall and 28% on threes, making a few more twos and threes would have made a huge difference.
On other topics, Aysia Bugg had another tough day. 4-12 from the field, 6 assists but 5 turnovers. But man, when she is not in the game the Pitt offense just grinds to a halt. Even though she wasn't playing all that well it really hurt the team when she fouled out late in the first overtime. Several times after that Pitt had chances to either take the lead or build on a lead and they just couldn't get the offense moving. Both Walsh and Gordon tried to replace her. They played a combined 29 minutes, 1-4 from the field (all Gordon, and the basket was a basically uncontested layup late in the third overtime when NC State was playing to not foul), 2 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 turnovers. This team needs one of those two to step up and give good minutes as the backup point guard.
