coach tweeted that he got a commitment from YNT player. anyone know who?

He can’t identify her until she signs a LOI. I assume it’s not a junior or senior because either could have signed a LOI. But, a commitment from a Youth National Team player is great for the program.

I took a visit yesterday to a school that prides itself on being a soccer school. National titles. Final 4’s. MLS players and international players galore.

I think Pitt could be on its way to being a bigger soccer school.

Awesome.

It better be for what we've invested. This is a really strong area for girls soccer and though I wasn't there, I remember the highlights and stories from the crowd of that UNC game. I think both programs could draw consistent crowds of 1000+ if they get real good. Could serve a nice niche here.

BTW, the men signed 2 YNT players. I mean this is what the big programs/big coaches do so its not unexpected

go on....

i've said it over and over again but football is dying. it will either need to radically change or end. not tomorrow. but in the next 20 years. kids aren't playing it anymore. more damning research will continue to flow around the head injuries.

will college soccer grow? i don't see it filling 50k stadiums. but i do think it can be a money maker for schools in the future.

anyway, i've also been a huge proponent for being known for something. anything. pick a sport. rutgers always sucks in everything but they were always a good men's soccer program. etc etc. pitt should be the same. pick one or two sports where you're truly competitive nationally. it's not terribly expensive for some of these sports to go from middle of the pack to high level.

It's not just that, they are ruining football, too many rules and the thing that kills the sport, REPLAY is way too invasive, too much of football, especially the NFL is devoted to referees, flags and being "under review", I'm about to abandon it for soccer totally, I'll watch Steelers and Pitt football and NO OTHER GAMES this year- mainly to avoid REPLAY and "getting it right", really just to see a sport with no replay! Sad that the A-hole Americans are pushing replay for soccer and trying to ruin another sport.

The American most certainly are not the ones pushing for replay in soccer. The Americans are generally in favor of it, but if it was just the Americans who wanted it no one else in the world would care.

Yeah, VAR sucks IMO. Slows down the game and provides another avenue for match fixing.

My favorite was the offsides line used in a EPL game VAR was a mess that game and the line was all jacked up.

TBF, they said that line had nothing to do with what the officials ruled on. i don't know where they got it but it was weird. actually got the call right, though.

MLS is trying to ram that ugly, sport killing BS into their game, I don't see it yet internationally THANKFULLY. But it is the ANAL Americans who are always obsessed with things being perfect.

The "Beauty" in "Beautiful Game" is that it doesn't stop, now they want to ruin another sport! It's bad enough that football is totally destroyed by replay and hockey, basketball and baseball teetering on ruination, the last sport left pure is now being threatened. I don't care if they get it PERFECT, just leave it at close enough and play on. I'll probably stick with minor league soccer like MASL, USL, NPSL because THANKFULLY they don't have the money to buy the technology that ruins all sports.

@Pitt79 coming in hot!

I actually feel like I'm alone about this replay sh!t. To me it's worse going through replay and all the BS that sprouts out of it, than just accepting a few mistakes here and there, and yes it's just a few, a lot of these things, like off sides on a hockey goal, the guy lifting off the base a half centimeter in baseball, "what is a catch" in football, the guys foot 1/16th of an inch onto the 3 point line in basketball, NOBODY ever really noticed that stuff or cared before they RUINED SPORTS with replay.

Agree...they are games filled with mistakes that people should learn to live with. In my opinion, officiating has gotten worse as replay has become more prevalent. Plus, even replay doesn’t always get the call right!

If you don't see it internationally it's only because you aren't paying attention. For instance it was all of two days ago that there was controversy in the FA Cup match in England between Tottenham and Rochdale over video review. And on Saturday you are going to get your worst nightmare when they make the final decision to include video review at the World Cup this summer. If it was only the Americans pushing this, why would they be going to have it in a tournament that the Americans won't even be in?

In addition to being used at several FIFA world tournaments, video review is now being used at least on a trial basis in the following countries:
United States
Australia
Poland
Germany
Italy
Portugal
China
England
Thailand
France

It's coming, whether you like it or not.

OK, I have no interest in watching the FA Cup etc. So maybe I never noticed. But it is very sad that they are adding this garbage to the last sanctuary where you could avoid that nonsense. I'll have to now DVR all games of soccer now too, so I can FF past this idiocy of "Getting it right" and of course add an hour to the recording time to make sure the game fits in with the added, unnecessary BS.

they're doing it in the bundesliga. i didn't watch full games this weekend but a couple. bayern won 4-0 or whatever so they did it after every goal. it was at freiburg so the home crowd effect wasn't there, regardless.

to me, it's like the NFL in the late 80's or whenever they started using it. just inevitable. the NFL has taken it to absurd lengths at this point. so the middle ground is what you need to find. there is a ton of money in the game. and EVERY fan watching on tv and in the stands looking at video can see a gross mistake. it's just inevitable in any sport. you can have gross incompetence on a scoring play with no way to rectify it.

english soccer refs are amongst europe's worst. and then they picked those dummies to be the video people. of course it's a problem. bundesliga seems to be fine, to me.

Honest question? Do you want it? Do you think it's so needed? It amazes me that so many people want it?

If they do it right, sure. As we have seen in other sports, the devil is in the details. But if they would use it for what they say they are supposed to use it for then yeah, have at it. For instance when you can get the call right as to whether the ball crossed the goal line or not why wouldn't you want to do that? If a guy is clearly and obviously off sides, why would you want the goal he scored to count (or vise-versa)? If a guy punches someone away from the play and the ref doesn't see it why wouldn't you want that guy ejected from the game?

By the way, the vote to include video review in the laws of the sport was approved unanimously on Saturday.

I watched an MLS game this weekend, SO SAD, they added the replay garbage! Twice they stopped the game for that BS, both times the replay favored the team I was rooting for! Honestly I didn't care, because both times it was nonsense that would have gone unnoticed, added 5 minutes of extra time to each half. Me personally, I'd rather the game end on time than get it perfect. Soon it will be ridiculous like the NFL as they add and add and add BS to "look at" they will keep adding BS until each half has 20 minutes extra time every game.

Goal line is fine by me. Determination is immediate and hasn’t slowed the game down a bit. I would be fine with cheap shots yielding red cards at the next stoppage. I hate offside video reviews. The linesmen do a very good job. If the very tip of a boot or a bit of hair is offside 1/60s early, let the goal count.

Now, if technology gets to the point that it can immediately aid the linesmen - great.

If they want to ruin soccer with replay, don't add it to extra time, I don't want 5-6-8-10 minutes added for that BS.

Well that's part of the problem. They say they are going to use it to correct clear and obvious errors, but then in practice they try to do more. In the FA Cup game last week the guy was off sides by about three arm hairs. As soon as they saw it was that close they should have stopped reviewing and went with the call on the field. Now if that guy was off sides by three feet, which would take all of about 10 seconds to see, then you call him off side and disallow the goal.

That's the problem with replay, give them an inch and they take a mile, and it never ends, NFL is the best illustration of what a total cancer replay is. It never stops spreading, there's no chemo therapy to kill it, it's terminal.

Couldn’t disagree more. There are plenty of stoppages in soccer. Sure, the clock keeps running, but the action stops. Getting a goal call right is more important. Barcelona tied Valencia 1-1 when what should have been the winning goal for Barca wasn’t counted because the referee said he didn’t see it all the way over the line. It was two feet over the line. A replay of that would have taken 20 seconds because it was so obvious. The Valencia captain even said after the game it clearly was a goal and he didn’t understand how the referee could have missed it because he was only two meters from the ref when the ball went in.

They shouldn’t have VAR for fouls, for whether the ball went beyond the touch line, and for offsides unless there is a goal involved. But getting it right in critical situations should be the most important thing.

If they had VAR during CR7’s entire career, he probably would have 25 to 50 less goals, between the blatant dives he takes that are called PKs and the offsides goals he scores. He had two goals in one game this year where replay showed him more than a meter offsides in both. Last week he got a PK on a play where the replay showed absolutely no contact by the defender. He knew he couldn’t get to the pass, so he took a lovely dive. It would have scored 8.5 if done in a pool. That kind of stuff cheapens the game much more than VAR.

And that sucks, that's a bad thing, not a good thing! There's not that much scoring in soccer as it is, and and you want to take away more of it for stuff nobody noticed for the last 100 years? Taking dives is a STRATEGY and I'm fine with it, if you dupe the ref you should GET PAID, and who cares if a ref misses an occasional off sides by a yard or 2? Scores are already super LOW and you want to use technology to have LESS GOALS?

If you look at replay across all sports, it more often than not ERASES the most exciting plays of the game in the name of getting it right. It rarely GIVES, it almost always takes away.

I want to use technology to get it right. Sometimes it will result in more goals. Barcelona has had 5 disallowed goals this year that would have been reversed. And at least two wongly given. Real Madrid has had at least two wrongly disallowed. And at least 7 wrongly given. Also, there are a lot of handballs that aren’t called. That would result in more goals, not less.

Diving never should be rewarded. It is supposed to result in a yellow card, not a goal. If it is a strategy it should be penalized and not rewarded.

So basically you want to take extra time ruining the flow and entertainment value to maybe even it out, screw that. It's not worth it, it takes the fun out of being a fan and enjoying the experience, that's priority #1 over being perfect and anyways, a lot of replays get it wrong so it just evens it up a little.

They don’t stop the clock for VAR. They will add additional extra time I assume, but that just means more soccer...and getting it right.

RUINS the sport, I want it to fit into the 2 hour window, that's a major attraction of soccer. OVER AFTER TWO HOURS. DONE! That matters more than, maybe getting it right, maybe not.

Review is an UGLY INOPERABLE CANCER in every sport. It's ruining sports to the point that I personally am opting for minor league sports and leagues (MASL/NPSL) that can't afford the technology.

They won’t get it right. It will be another chance to make awful calls. Soccer refs gift the home team about 0.5 goals per game. They do this by heavily favoring home side in calls that could go either way. As a City fan, I thought the refs sucked today. I am betting Inited fans feel differently. I also didn’t see a single call that I would want replay anywhere near. Yes, a ball hit a United hand in the box. Was it ball tobhad, or was the player making himself big? Yes, Aguaro got spiked in the box. Was the challenge reckless, or was there enough contact with the ball that the challenge was legal? IMO, these just aren’t questions for a replay official.

The only thing I might want technology for is to see if a ball or puck crossed a goal line. If they could put a chip in it and have some buzzer go off and then change all rules to fit that scenario, like forget about where the knee was, if the buzzer goes off TD! Forget about if the whole ball or puck crossed the line... Buzzer=Score. That's OK, and forget the review of replays, that becomes just as subjective as the call on the field, because they go WAY BEYOND obvious errors onward to micromanagement.

your tone that barca doesn't get calls is ridiculous. come on, man.

Horrible, VAR is GARBAGE, just started this year, and a month in already RUINING THE SPORT! I DVRd Atlanta/LAFC yesterday, and 2nd half two UGLY, WORTHLESS.... WRONG VAR reviews! On one, dude falls, practically looked like a dive at regular speed, even more so slowed down.... "Oh wait, time to go to VAR" Announcers, "No way that's a foul, he fell on his own, maybe a dive? No more than a yellow, BUT NO PENALTY!"... I totally agreed with them! Ref comes out "PENALTY!" LMFAO... REPLAY FAILS AS USUAL! Get it right my ass!!! So because of the useless NONSENSE of rejudging, judgment calls, they add 8 minutes of extra time and cuts off my recording 4 minutes early! Lucky it was a blow out 4-0. Thank God! "Gettin' it right!" ANOTHER SPORT TOTALLY RUINED!!!
