The womens team got a transfer from Southern Cal, Destinie Gibbs.

I don't know what to make of this one. She was a four star recruit out of high school (she's from Georgia), but she only averaged 8 - 6 - 4 in high school. She started her first nine games at USC, but then didn't play a lot after that, averaging 2.3 - 1.5 - 1.0. As a sophomore she only played in 15 games and averaged 1.2 ppg. Last year she sat out the whole season redshirting. She is going to graduate this summer, so she will be eligible immediately next season as a graduate transfer and then have two seasons of eligibility left. I guess this gives the team a little more class balance, but it seems like an odd transfer.

I guess you can look at Destinie Gibbs as a replacement on the roster for Chelsea Welch, who is no longer on the team and would have been a Junior. Welch averaged 18 minutes and 4 points per game last season, so Ms. Gibbs could well be an upgrade if she's worked on her game as she red-shirted. Gibbs is listed as 5-11, which is good size for a guard. Based on her USC stats, she does not appear to be a 3-point threat.

It is odd, especially as a guard, that she averaged so few points in HS but was still so highly rated and highly recruited... The Pitt release says she is "Known for her defensive prowess..." If she can effectively defend our opponents best guard, she will be an asset.

This means that the Pitt women's roster will have 6 brand-new faces (5 incoming freshmen + Gibbs) for next season in addition to two players (Bubbles and Brittany Gordon) who sat out last season with injuries. So we will essentially have 8 new players -- what a roster turnover.

The only returners who played last season are Bugg, Diop, Potvin, and Carey. So having another player with at least some college experience -- in Destinie Gibbs -- is a good thing.

We can only hope that by adding Ms. Gibbs the ever resourceful Coach Suzie has found Pitt another "Wignot."

Go Pitt.
