Caught the women's game today - first time I've seen this season's team.

Some thoughts:
--Great to see Yacine Diop back. She was the best athlete on the floor by a wide margin. Still makes risky passes, but fun to watch her create. She shot 7 for 18 for 24 points with 9 rebounds.

--Kalista Walters continues to be a nifty scorer around the hoop. She has a knack for getting into good position for passes and finishing.

--New comer Danielle Garven seemed to play okay, but I see in the boxscore that she was only 3 of 12. She made some nice jumpers, but missed several layups. She hustles.

--Jasmine Whitney had a good game, save a few poor turnovers. Made a couple of nice drives to the hoop. She's not spectacular, but can be a solid point guard, IMHO.

--Watching warm-up shooting, two things struck me. One is that Cassidy Walsh was like a machine shooting 3-balls. At one point she made 6 in a row -- I counted. Then in the game she hit her first 2 three-balls and finished 2 of 4.

--The other thing that struck me in warmups is that Kauai Bradley hardly made anything from any distance. In the game she took one shot and missed. Not at all confident offensively - an understatement...

--The starting lineup has no height - with post players Garven and Walters at about 6-1. Pitt was out-rebounded by Towson by 10 today. Not going to be pretty going forward.

--True freshman Jaala Henry, a 6-3 forward, got 15 minutes of playing time. She hit an open jumper and hit her foul shots. She looks the part - not to skinny and not too heavy. Could be decent with experience.

--True freshman Cara Judkins, at 6-2, has some good bulk to play center. Though she looks like she has a long way to go to develop. She played 3 minutes and her stats were 1 rebound and 2 fouls. But she did hustle. Looks like a project before she can contribute down the road.

--Pike Rodriguez was a cool story - she's a true frosh 5-11 guard. She comes in and hits her first 2 three-points, one from really deep, like there's nothing to it. Ended up 2 for 4 from 3.

--Bugg, Lamb and Sall didn't dress.

--Another true frosh, Kyla Nelson, 5-11, was interesting. She really hustles. Played 15 minutes and went 1 for 5, but what impressed me were two very aggressive drives to the hoop that she made - where she was faster than I ever thought she would be.

--Alayna Gribble is a starter, but she got 2 quick fouls and ended up playing 7 minutes and scoring 2 points.

--Looked to me that Gribble and Rodriguez have very similar bodies and similar games. Both are stand-still 3 point shooters. Nelson is similar, but maybe a tad more athletic.

--I came away thinking that Coach Suzie has improved the team with the additions - she certainly has more options this season because of the bigger roster. But we still suffer from not having a dynamic/athletic player in the post, and we still lack, aside from Diop and to a lesser degree the offensively-challenged Bradley, having "athletic" players. To my eye, instead of getting more Diops, we have added more Gribbles...

--I can see us being decent offensively when the outside shots are falling, but aside from Diop/Bradley, we will struggle to defend athletic players.

Just my .02.

Go Pitt.

I didn't go down today but I did watch it on the computer. Mostly I think your thoughts are right on.

Diop actually looks much improved from when she last played, but she still has the maddening habit of making absolutely brain dead plays once or twice (or more) every half. I made a comment the other day about her dribbling the ball past and through every player on the other team on one possession and then dribbling the ball off her foot on the next one, so I had to laugh today when she did exactly that at one point in the first half. At least that time her defender was so far off her that she was able to recover the ball. And someone needs to tell her that she shouldn't be shooting threes unless she's wide open and it's late in the shot clock. She's probably no better than the fourth or fifth best three point shooter on the team, and yet she has been taking way more of them than anyone else.

Garvin was 3-12 today off a game on Thursday when she shot something like 1-9 against Duquesne. She's better than that. Hopefully she starts hitting some shots soon, because they are going to need her to score more than she has the last two games.

Walsh has always been a good shooter in the warmups. It's when she's shooting them in the games that has been the problem. Maybe today gives her a little confidence. She's actually a pretty good defender as well, but she needs to be able to make shots to get more playing time.

Henry played 15 minutes and had 4 points, 4 rebounds and 4 fouls. There is some hope there, but she has got to figure out how to play post defense without fouling or she isn't going to get much time against teams with good post players, because she'll commit too many fouls.

Last week the ladies team was criticized pretty badly on this forum. I didn't watch today,
so my questions are......Are we really as good as these comments or was Townsen who was
0-3 so bad that we looked good? Did Suzie suddenly turn into a better bench coach?

The lack of speed and quickness is seemingly recognized by the coaches as the comments on the official site on the new recruits for next season is that they are fast.

Towson is bad. Really bad. We were ahead by 28 in the 3rd quarter before they finally woke up and we got a little sloppy and the game got closer.

If my comments led you to believe the women's team is in any way really good, then I misled you. They are by no means really good. I think they will be better than last season - not saying much - mainly because of the more options Coach has with the expanded roster.

But major problems remain - such as the lack of an athletic inside presence and lack of overall team quickness...

And I suspect the stand-still three point shooters (Gribble, Rodriguez and Walsh) will have some success against the lesser teams, but will be pretty much negated by the more athletic defenders in the upper half of the ACC...

One of those players tied the Pitt record with seven made threes in a game on the road last season against a team that made the second round of the NCAA tournament.

There are always ways to get spot up shooters shots, but Pitt generally does not seem interested in running plays that would get those shots. For instance the other day someone else said that Pitt runs an inside out offense. If Pitt actually did run an inside out offense you could get shots for shooters right at the three point line pretty regularly. But so far this year when Pitt throws the ball into the post the intent isn't to look for a kick out to a perimeter shooter, it's to get mostly Kalista Walters a shot.
