The biggest complaint has been our recruiting. Yet, if we hypothetically replace Maia and Slim with Swanigan and Rowan, the result today is largely the same. We aren't a guy or 2 away. We are 6 or 7 away.

I don't know about 6 or 7, but yeah I wouldn't disagree entirely. I think a guard who can more consistently penetrate would do wonders for us. I wouldn't mind giving more time to Wilson or Milligan at the two and seeing what they can do. We rely too much on jump shooting (like last year) and we saw the result tonight when the shots don't fall.

Why dont you let the rest of the season play out first?

In 2011 Pitt got streamrolled by Tennessee early in the year and won the Big East and got a 1 seed.

In 2009 Pitt got rolled by Villanova and West Virginia in the BE Tournament and went to the Elite 8.

In 2003 Pitt got spanked early by Georgia and still won the Big East and wen to the Sweet 16.

Let's see a few more games first before throwing in the towel. Despite perhaps popular belief, we did a lot of good things in this game. Making wide open shots just wasnt one of them.

It is just hard when you were one of the few guys defending this roster and this coach to everyone and then you watch them get steamrolled at home.

I think you're a bit dramatic but I get your point.

Purdue did to us what we did to UNC last year.
Just a single game.

Oh yea, I get that argument. Especially in hoops when just a single game means so little. But in our non conference we have so little of a chance to make a dent, it was very important to make a dent today against a good Purdue team.

Pitt plays 9 ranked teams this year. 9.

Kentucky plays 5.

Give it a rest. We have enough quality games.

We were within striking distance until the last 2 minutes, and if they don't make that ridiculous moving screen call against Robinson the last minute and a half isn't a lost cause. I'm not sure by what measure this is a "should've won game" either.
I don't think that would've done much for a comeback by Pitt, but seriously there will never be a call in sports history as bad that.

But I agree, you can't have it both ways. We're either not that good or we should've won. And considering they're the 11th ranked team, I don't know who really thought this was a must win game. The game was pretty close for the most part, and we were absolutely pathetic on offense. So if Pitt at it's worst loses to a team like Purdue in the way we did tonight, I'd say an average night even most games and we're at least a tournament team with 22 or more wins.

I have to dissent to this. Swanigan at the 5 would make a world of difference. We have a donut hole there. Can't say as much for Rowan but clearly our 2G spot is rather average so any plus player there would help.

Didn't see a ton of him tonight but from the hype I heard about Swanigan, just watching him when he was in tonight I wasn't really impressed. But you're right about our 5 situation, literally anybody would be an upgrade.

Nelson-Ododa makes Dante Taylor look like he was Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain combined. I really don't know if redshirting Nix can even still be an option at this point.

They need someone in at center that can either help you on offense or defense, if not the rare case of both. Right now Luther is our best center by a country mile, but I really don't think they would consider giving him extended minutes anywhere other than the 4.

Really a tough situation we've never had to deal with before. Blair was our shortest center I think in recent years, but our best. And even before Gray and McGhee developed into good players, they were at least taller than most opposing team's centers. This is the first time we don't have size and/or toughness from our big man. Even Young at the 5 last year was incredibly better, but I don't think you move him either when he's playing this well.

The foul call should've been on Purdue, putting Robinson at the line and moving their lead to 7 with a minute and a half. Still a long shot but much more doable.

I wasn't even thinking about calling a foul on Purdue to be honest. Just the fact that they called an illegal screen on the player dribbling the ball, who never even did anything that you could even interpret as trying to illegally screen in some odd way while still remaining the ball handler.

I mean that is literally just as bad as a ref in an NFL game calling PI on a run play, and saying the interference was 60 yards downfield in the endzone and given the offense the ball at the 1.

I didn't want to sound like I thought that call cost us a shot at the game, we did enough beyond dumb things on our own. It just really is a joke that someone can be that incompetent at their jobs to make that call there. If Pitt was trailing by 80 points, he should still be barred from officiating.

Seeing as to how Nix is walking around with a walking boot on his foot and has been for at least a couple of weeks I'd say that redshirting him just might still be an option.

I'll take him from mid-January on if it means we don't have to watch Nelson-Ododa attempt to play center anymore. They knew when they got Nelson-Ododa, Maia, and Nix already that Nix would redshirt this year.

But seriously if he is back to full strength and you're not already like 3/4 of the way through ACC play, would you continue to put our current lineup out on the court knowing that you are getting essentially nothing from the 5 position?

My point is, they thought Nelson-Ododa and Maia would be good enough this season at the 5 and I don't think it will be even close to that. Maia shows some flashes of being a solid rebounder, but Ododa has been unable to show really anything so far this season. I just really don't see him doing any better in ACC play.

Maia has zero total rebounds in the last two games. He is not showing signs of being a good rebounder.

At this point Nix is way, way behind Maia and Nelson-Ododa. And he's injured. Resign yourself to the fact that barring a disaster he isn't playing this season.

Did they call an illegal screen or was it more of a push from Robinson. We were saying the same thing (how does a dribbler set an illegal screen?)

But on the Pete scoreboard replay, I thought I saw Robinson's arm extended at the defender.

Luther looks like a Lilliputian out there and it's pretty terrifying that he's been our most effective Big.

Steamrolled?? Not even close. They made shots late in the game when we were forced to gamble on defense. They're better than us, but not by that much. A couple of treys late and it's a dogfight. Our seats are in the corner above the visitor bench. When they built their big lead, their players were smiling & joking. 5 minutes later, they knew it wasn't gonna be easy. Give them credit, they performed very well down the stretch.

When the ref demonstrated to Jamie Dixon what Robinson did he showed that he jumped out in front of the defender like you would expect if he were calling a blocking foul on a screener. On more than one occasion Dixon yelled "but he had the ball" or some variation on that. I was positive he was going to get a T, and I wonder if he didn't because the ref gave him more leeway because even he had to know that call was suspect.

That was kinda the impression we all got as well.

He called an illegal screen. Jamie was so furious it looked like he tried to grab the basketball from the ref. I really think if they didn't soon realize there was no basis for that call, Jamie would've been T'd up easily.

He definitely looked like he tried to grab the ball.

Exactly. The ref realized he blew the call and let Jamie vent. Horrible call.
