Without too much imagination, that was really what the score should have been yesterday. This team is still learning, is still pretty young at some key positions, and is slowly changing its identity and attitude.
The Weah drop was horrible. He was wide open, the pass was right in his hands, all he had to do was squeeze it and hand it to the ref. I sure hope he can be taught how to catch, or drilled, or whatever because he can get open, but the #1 job of a WR is to actually catch the ball.
The Ollison fumble going in for the score was crushing. He's a Fr, and he's inexperienced, but ball security is #1 for a Rb, and especially there. That could have been devastating.
The weird fumble by Peterman and the handoff/interception/catch by the Va defensive player for a touch was another flukey play. It was another gift. Hard to blame Peterman because the kid blew right in up the middle, and when Peterman looked up to throw the guy was all over him. Terrible center play today. At least 2 snaps over the QB's head, and this play where a missed block cost us 6.
Thought there was a lot of holding inside that wasn't called, but I think the zebras more than made it up on the last play by VA where Maddux sure looked like he hit the receiver early on that sideline pass. Perhaps they though it was an uncatchable ball, but it was at least a 50/50 call on PI there.
Much better punting today. Actually got on downed inside the 10!
Even if Boyd doesn't want to get hurt on punt return duty, he has the surest hands for fielding punts on the team. He looks very comfortable catching the ball. However, he really needs to run up and FAIR CATCH the ball instead of letting it hit and roll. He cost us tons of field position yesterday. You don't get hurt fair catching!
Galambos is playing pretty good, he is making plays, he should get some credit here. He isn't Butkus or Lambert, but he's getting better it seems. Didn't see what happened in the big running play VA busted up the middle early, but he seems to be doing his job ok.
4-1 looks pretty good from here, another couple weeks on the road. Seems like this entire season is being played on the road? Hope they keep it going, this week showed they can get it done, but still have a lot to improve on. The mistakes/missed opportunities listed earlier have to stop if they want to keep winning against better teams. We're heading into crunch time, so far they've overcome some pretty big obstacles and managed to hold it together, no head scratchers yet.
Totally impressed with Narduzzi so far, as well as his staff. Huge upgrade over blah we're used to.
How many more wins are necessary before we get some more commitments from our targets? There are at least a half a dozen on the fence that seem puzzling at this point. Getting Clark, Gilbert, Hamlin, and Matthews on board would be a fantastic push. Then let HCPN close hard on some up for grabs targets. That would be a solid class.
