Wow, I didn't see that coming

That was just an absolutely pathetic effort all around. We settled for 3's instead of working it inside on offense and we couldn't contain anything on defense. We had nobody under the boards because we took 3's so quickly and ND could do anything they wanted on offense. There was NO toughness anywhere to be seen tonight. It was just a terrible effort all around and we apparently are back where we started. This abysmal effort is on everyone.

Sad but true, John. I'm disgusted tonight.

Here's some of what Capel said after the game, ""worst performance of any team I ever coached. we will fix it. we were selfish, an awful performance but we will fix it. Shouldn't wait for 2nd half for effort on defense. I'm embarrassed, and sorry but we will get it fixed."

Wait, what they were doing in the second half on defense was the result of effort?

Good god, it's even worse than I thought!
Aiken said something like Pitt started the half with effort and ND missed a couple shots and then Pitt couldn't convert and ND hit a three and it went downhill. Then Capel said, "shouldn't wait for 2nd half for effort."

OK, at least that makes some sense.

But on the other hand, Aiken clearly was watching a different game than the rest of us. Notre Dame didn't start the second half with a couple missed shots. They turned the ball over on their first possession, and then made a layup, a three, and a jumper on their next three possessions before Pitt called a timeout. They didn't miss their first shot until after the timeout. Then they made a two and a three before they missed their second shot of the half.

So Curtis pretty clearly remembers something that didn't happen.

After another deplorable performance by the coaching staff and the Pitt team several things are evident, coaching and recruiting are subpar, the majority of the players are not ACC caliber talent. Upset a team or 2 during the season but very much in the bottom 3rd of the conference. Chances are PItt will be looking for a new HC in a another 2 years or so.

It may have to be fixed by another head coach. Looks like Pitt has made a U turn back to playing like it did against St Francis.

A basic rule of defense especially when you are playing a team that shoots the ball well Which ND always seems to do is to locate the shooter. Well in the past two games we havent when a player from Wake Forest and Notre Dame went off. Also why cant we bring in pure shooters. We hear when they are recruited about their shooting ability but then they come here and dont live up to it. There was at least a half of dozen bricks thrown up last night.

The next few games are huge. This has been the time in the season where the past four years have fallen apart. They have to get over this hump and not go on another long listing streak in conference

Why wait

2 years my ass, he will be canned after next year if we don't see serious improvement

Let's wait and see what happens in the next few games. Or in the next game, to be more precise. Let's see how Capel and his team "fix" this, as Capel promised.

Saying what should happen if this continues and what will happen are 2 different things. Yes, if this continues, Capel needs to go after this year. But it won't happen and he'll still be here. Even if this skid doesn't continue, he's still the same coach and he's not a good head coach. So I think we're stuck with him for a while and longer than the next couple of years.

I'd be very surprised if we ever get any kind of post-season tournament bid while Capel is the head coach here.

Do they even have gameplans or strategies for each opponent? The fact that Pitt came out and started shooting 3 after 3 made no sense. What the hell was that? It's like Capel did nothing to prepare them for ND. Don't they have team meetings to discuss their upcoming opponents, their strengths and weaknesses and the gameplan for Pitt? Shooting 3 after 3 could not have been it.

I agree that it couldn't be the gameplan. So, it is the fault of certain players for not following the gameplan and then it is the fault of Capel for allowing it to happen much longer yesterday than it should have.

My interpretation was that Toney was just unhappy with his recent scoring and said screw the game plan I’m going to just gun threes. There is no way that was part of the game plan or Capel should be fired yesterday.
