Certainly a down year - particularly at the top. Not sure how many of these kids will matriculate to FBS programs, but a list I put together. Around 30 "offered".

PA is a top 10 state for NFL players. If Pitt can recruit well in OH, PA, NJ, MD, DC - there is plenty of talent to be had. The Wpial should be the base, but certainly not the only area. No winning team recruits on one area. Pitt does need to do a better job landing the best in the area. Something it hasn't done in quite some time.

One of the worst years ever locally.

Aliquippa has 5 FBS players? Honestly, they might be the best tiny public school in the nation

Temple's Rivals site has been reporting a commitment from kicker Ryan Coe from South Fayette.

We all know the long list of big time players who came from the WPIAL. But come on, in 2018 the WPIAL can not be the base for a P5 program. The talent pool seems to be getting smaller by the year.

If you look at the top 5 or so players from the WPIAL each year, it certainly can be a base. Not saying it is what it used to be, and certainly trending down at the moment, but it’s typically still better than many areas. PA puts out as many or more NFL players as states like Alabama and Louisiana. Pitt just need to start getting their share.

Supposedly the best player from the WPIAL is Porter Jr. I am watching the NA-PR game, and every time he touches the ball he drops it. The LB (King) for PR is the guy who we might look back at and say he was underrated.

Gateway is the one team I have been impressed with. We should be making recruiting trips to that school. They have a good group of underclassmen.

What exactly did Pitt do wrong? He did not have a strong enough arm to play P5 football.
Exactly. If Pitt used him exclusively last year, and started him this year, we'd likely have 1 win at most, IMO. Would P-R or any other school's prospects like us more then? Heck no, it would be "Pitt is the worst team in America" and we'd be on even fewer lists.

Play the players who will win the most for you.

In the past yes, but today no way. Trending down is a major understatement. If it ever trends back up Pitt will get its share. But PSU, OSU, ND and Mich will beat out Pitt many times as they always have. My guess is if these 4 schools REALLY (not as a backup plan) want a player from the WPIAL they get the kid over Pitt at least 80% of the time. They can sell everything we don’t have.... consistent winning, huge crowds, the kids are treated like Gods and on and on.

The WPIAL has become slightly better than West Virginia. Go back to that hole you came out of.

"Ben" had no business playing at this level. Pitt at least gave him a shot. Why don't the great people of P-R hold it against ND or PSU that they never even gave him a shot? You guys would lose every street fight, you are a bunch of cake eaters.
The case against Pitt might have been there for some had Pitt not offered, and he had gone to whatever Ivy he was going to.

He was given every chance at Pitt to show what he had to offer. And he did.

If anything Pitt should be lauded for giving him a shot at this level.

That's my point. They gave the local boy the shot. And now are demonized for it.

Who is “demonizing” Pitt? I don’t think there is much controversy at all. He had a shot, but it didn’t work out.
I posted in a thread I will post on this board about the local talent.

From this year's draft class through 2012, there were 6 Western PA kids taken in the first 3 rounds, one First rounder (Aaron Donald).

Between 1983 and 1977, mind you 4 less teams then drafting, so that is 4 less picks per round, 31 Western Pa kids were taken in the 1st 3 rds, 6 First rounders.

There will be about 20 kids who signed LOI's with D1 level (P5, FBS) schools this year, about the same as last year. Next year looks even worse. 25 years ago, there were 50. 35 years ago, 60. Okay? How's those facts?

You stated “slightly better than West Virginia”. I didn’t realize WV had that many players drafted.....

Again, I even stated the WPIAL is not as good as it once was (I can quote that comment too if needed), I just stated that it’s not a bad place for a BASE. PA is a top 10 state for NFL talent, with the WPIAL being a fair portion of that total. It’s not like Pitt is based in North’s Dakota, Vermont,.... or Michigan.

...And name me 10 other metro areas that have 20-30 D1 football players in a very down cycle. The WPIAL is still putting out more D1 players than about half of the states in this country.

The narrative that the WPIAL is garbage by some is very tiresome. It’s not what it once was, but it’s not dead yet. It will be interesting to see if this down cycle continues over the next few years.

Yes, but most of the "PA Talent" is now from the eastern portion of the state.

With out being hard on any young player. It has been stated before many times. Just because you look good in shorts at these camps does not make you a football player. Sometimes a player gets all excited and let the recruiting sources think they are being recruited harder then they are.
The final one would be that they say they have an offer and misunderstood the conversation they had with the school

Pitt is done getting PR kids after the Ben circus....

Cmon man DiNucci couldn’t play at the FBS level, anyone with a clue could see that.

If he wasn’t a local kid there’s no way he would’ve been given a scholarship.

He is the starting QB and having a good season for the #3 FCS team, which would be near the top of the MAC. He is clearly a MAC level QB as was Tino.
