Not important sports huh? They
don't make $$. Gee whiz, I guess
they don't count. Yeah right!

First of all congrats to Wentzel
and Bonocurssi. Both in NCAA
finals. They are now both All
Americans. Their wins put
Pitt up on the board last night
in 10th place. That was great
to see on TV.

Soccer won in OT against Duke
with only 10 players on the field
(that's one player less) due to a
penalty red card. I don't know
much about soccer. When you're
one player down, I don't care
what sport it is...that's a great
win.

Pitt got a lot of publicity out of
these sports last night. Sometimes
there's other ways to measure
$$ amounts.

What publicity did they get? I am the biggest Pitt soccer fan and even I didn't know the score of the game. Was going to watch it this morning until you spoiled it. Thanks.

The athletic department should send out an email blast on Monday morning capitalizing on the wrestling results for Victory Heights fundraising. They did a nice job promoting the sports complex addition, but sending out an email blast that says “look at these wrestling results - best in a half-century at Pitt! we’re trying to build them a new facility to do that a lot more, and we need your help!” would do a lot.

Great stuff. Two ncaa finalists? That’s amazing. Thanks for sharing. I watched some of the Big10 wrestling championships last week and it seemed that every weight class pitted two top 5 ranked wrestlers vs each other. So for pitt to have two ncaa finalists, that’s a huge deal.

as far as soccer, playing 10 v 11 isn’t that much of a big deal. When you have the ball you commit an extra body into the offensive attack, and when you lose the ball you drop a player defensively. With that amount of players on the field, it can seamlessly happen, unlike a power play in hockey. But still, a win is a win and everyone of them matter. Both Pitt soccer programs are here to stay and worth supporting in person. Matches will be a great time and cheap ticket once fans are allowed to return.

Sorry - any game/match that's completed is fair game for commenting.
I guess SMF is not as smart as he says he is. Personally, I know to stay off my phone until I watch an event that I wasn’t watching live. ;)

Olympic sports U—
Wrestling, both soccer teams, baseball, volleyball, are all nationally relevant. Volleyball is establishing itself as a bit of a national power—

I’m in the camp it’s great to have a competitive athletic department across all sports - doesn’t have to be revenue vs non revenue sports (although that’s inaccurate too as the reality is PItt has to invest in all of its teams or wouldn’t have been admitted to the ACC which would have crippled football- the idea that PItt could disinvest in its athletic teams not called football and men’s basketball and keep its standing in the ACC is a false narrative— they’d probably be in breech of league agreements that require levels of investment in facilities, scholarships, etc.

Why don't you tell us one more
time that you're Pitt's "biggest
soccer fan." I don't know my ass
from my elbow when it comes to
soccer. However that's probably
more than the usual bs you
post on here relative to everything.

The wrestlers were on national tv.
IMO that equates to a lot of publicity
that can also easily relate to
recruiting, ticket sales etc.
Soccer, they're a top 4 team in the
nation. Great soccer fan that you are,
I assume even you can relate to that,
and understand how it advances Pitt
athletically.

Sorry this disagrees with your ongoing
narrative against all sports other than
football and Bball.

For Pitt basketball and football or some other mainstream sport, yes, I will shut off my phone and certainly not check this board but nobody really even posts about soccer on the Olympic Sports Board here. This had to be the first post about a Pitt regular season soccer match in the basketball board's history

It's just scolding someone for posting the info that seems a bit childish, that's all.

The red card did come at the end of the first half, so Pitt had to play the whole second half and the overtimes with only ten. That is a long time to play a man down.

On the other hand, Duke isn't any good, so having a 3-1 lead half way through the second half and needing overtime to win the game is not a good sign at all. They have not played very well this spring, certainly no where close to as good as they were in the fall.

I didn't look, but they are normally on the ACCN Extra live.

Interesting. You’d think that someone who is that big of a fan would make plans to watch it.

I used to print off the hoops schedule and basically block off the time. Didn’t want to miss a minute. And I mean that literally. And I was nowhere near being the biggest hoops fan on this board. Of course I understand life happens but anything I’m that big a fan of I watch live.

This is true. Bayern Munich had a player sent off in the 12th minute today and won 4-0. They scored 3 goals within 25 minutes of playing 10 v 11. Earlier this month, Barcelona had a player sent off in the 13th minute and won 3-0.

I think Pitt scored 2 quick goals against Duke after Petkovic got sent off.
