** Tonight, our Panthers turned it over so many times that they crashed the Basketball Message Boards!

** But no worries, as the Rivals computer wunderkinds did their work just in time for DRIBBLES!! (And I know that was their goal!).

** At least I can say that I actually wanted to do dribbles … because the Panthers at least had a few fair moments in Morgantown.

** But first, let me be clear. This was by no means an encouraging loss. Actually .... it sucked.

** So I assume I am here this evening to take solace in the fact that it could have sucked much worse!

** With that, allow me to speak of the good. There were three things I can speak of: Half court defense, John Hugley’s second half offense, and Will Jeffress’ best game ever as a Panther.

** And generally speaking, I do believe that the Panthers' overall mental intensity was much better than it was on Tuesday.

** Does this sound like faint praise? Well … it is. But that might be the most praise we can offer this year.

** So about this faint praise. For the most part, the half court defense our Panthers played tonight was the kind that could win some games. They switched better in man, They rotated better in zone. Three point shots weren’t as plentiful nor as open. We created some turnovers, and we cleaned the defensive glass.

** But none of that really matters when you turn the ball over 32 freakin times!

** All I could do all game long was to COUNT the turnovers as they continued to pile up … Ah-hah-hah!

** In fact, knowing we turned it over 32 freakin times, I think this is even greater evidence of how decent our half court defense actually was.

** Here’s the only question about today’s game that matters – can we get better?

** Some of the turnovers can be cleaned up. Some of them were caused by a lack of confidence in our execution. Some were from way too much dribbling. Many others were from a terrible night from Femi.

** A night like this from Femi is to be expected within his process, even if he is to have a solid campaign over the next 29 games.

** But unfortunately, so many more of the team's turnovers were a result of the fact that we simply do not have very good ball handlers handling the basketball. I don’t know if that can get better. It’s hard to see how it does.

** Here’s another troubling stat. WVU blocked 11 Panther shots. That’s not because the Hoopies are great shot blockers. It’s because we don’t take good shots.

** I’m not suggesting there are any answers for the offense. Actually, I’m worried that there are not. I think I’m only trying to find a way to adequately experience what is going to be a really tough year.

** And with that, I hope I can encourage just a few more of you to join me to watch the Panthers on Tuesday night. There’s a pretty good chance we will win our first game. I will even go out on a limb and say that I think we will. I just hope the Panther Lair message boards won’t crash again this time and we will be able to talk about it.

** Mostly, let's just hope that we will cut down the turnovers enough that we won't even feel the need to count them ... Ah-hah-hah!

One! One Panther turnover! Ah, ah, ah!

Two! Two Panther turnovers! Ah, ah, ah!

Three! Three Panther turnovers! Ah, ah, ah!

Somehow this felt like a better loss than Citadel.
Can't really say why...but it did.
Other teams are going to bury Odukale until Burton gets back.
In both games it seemed Pitt played hard. Still there were major defensive breakdowns.
Agree on Jeffress. He's asserting himself. He can move and jump. Can he shoot?
Would like to see more of Payton. He has size and hops.
It's only two games but Collier has been a major disappointment so far.
Olidapo looks like he could use a rest.
Like the overall effort and Hugely looks like he'll be a factor.
But unless Burton gets back to playing condition soon and somehow Horton is reinstated, this is going to be a grim trudge. 32 turnovers might be a record

I'm disappointed you didn't mention Gueye as a positive. Sure he dribbled too much a few times and has definitely doesn't have great hands. But I thought he provided us decent offense and had some nice moves to the post. It was a big improvement from the first game.

Some of it obviously is the fact the board was down… but it seems nobody really even cares anymore. And sadly I’m in that category.

32 turnovers.....an indication of:

*a team outclassed in talent
* poor chemistry of players on court
*players trying to do way too much to make up for above two
*lack of discipline
*poor fundamentals (an issue throughout college hoops not just Pitt)

I see a lot of future frustration for Femi as we saw tonight.

This team can't afford for Hugley, Femi, or Gueye to get needless back court or screen setting fouls, which has been a hallmark of the Capel era.

I can’t help but imagine where John would be if he actually played last year.

And if he actually played last year, how the team would have finished.

does all the other stuff happen?

his mistake was probably then gut punch which started this whole thing

Just got back from Cincinnati. I watched the first part of the 1st Half at halftime of USA/Mexico. We looked like we wanted to play at least. Expectations are so low that I was impressed we didn't get run out of the gym in the first 5 minutes. There was even a part of me that thought we can hang around a good while because the kids seemed to be playing hard.

I listened to most of the rest on the way home so I don't have much to add. Wouldn't 32 TO's be some type of record? I am big on Femi but if Johnson had this type of performance, I'd be all over him. I know Femi doesn't have any help but he has to be better.

So WVU has 2 all-CUSA transfers? The ODU kid seemed good but those are the types of players Pitt is missing. Capel has simply struck out way too much. I realize WVU is the better program but Capel is a salesman. Couldn't he convince an ODU kid to come to Pitt? He had to win some of those and he won very few. Speaking of, the outlook of this season would look MUCH different had we landed Jarrod West from Marshall. Again, far too many misses. Of course, Louisville lost tonight so the SoCon now leads the ACC/SoCon Challenge 2-0. Chris Mack... Louisville fans arent totally thrilled with him. He's also a huge dickhead.......if I were Heather, it couldn't hurt to ask how happy he is. Remember Buzz Williams leaving Marquette for a dead VT program? That shocked the college basketball world but he wasn't happy at Marquette.

Ugh ... forgot about West.

I would add Santos looks like he can develop into a player.

Hope he sticks around as things w HCJC unfold.

Pitt record is 40.

1. Louisville is one of the 10 best jobs in CBB. He’d have to be fired to leave
2. He won at Xavier like everyone else and can’t win at Louisville which is right behind Duke/UNC in the ACC and probably has more resources than both. He can’t win at Pitt

Why 32 turnovers? As a team, we do a lot of dribbling, Capel’s teams always have. Combine that with the fact we don’t have anyone on this team that can dribble with good ball security and you’re going to have a ton of turnovers. Particularly against an aggressive defense like WVU’s and when the refs are pretty lenient in allowing that aggressive defense.

We are really starving for capable dribblers with Sibande and Horton gone. Femi has to do it all himself and he’s really not that good at it, definitely not last night where he continually dribbled into double teams.

we can’t get Burton back soon enough.

I would add Santos looks like he can develop into a player.

Hope he sticks around as things w HCJC unfold.

On a good team, Santos would be:

FR - doesnt play
SO - 12 MPG off bench
JR - 5th starter
SR - solid starter

But even if Capel stayed, is he really going to put enough talent around Santos where he can fill the role I just mentioned?

The worst part on offense is this team is doing way too much "free-lancing' on offense. With this current group's ability they should be running nothing but set plays all the time except at the end of the shot clock, IMHO.

Yep. With no coherent plan and much of the same type of help, Femi will be XJ before long. What’s the common denominator

XJ is averaging 14 a game thru 2 games for a tournament team 😉

6 assists, 5 turnovers. 19 minutes last night. He will he pouting on the bench before long.

I have always said I think Johnson could fill a nice role in smaller doses. Had everyone come back, I would have liked to see Johnson playing 25 MPG as a SG with a good PG. Too much volume hurts him.

That’s not what hurts him. 6 assists in 19 minutes is insane! He may lead the country in assists with dump offs to TJD!!!

The lines are going to be quite tight in each of the next 5 games with or without Burton. With 1 guard its still going to be very difficult unfortunately. If our team starts talking to one another on both ends, we will have a chance in each of the next 5 as the communication needs to be way better. If we get Burton back we will have a real chance against the next 5.

Vanderbilt is currently down 2 starters and the big one is Liam Robbins who may or may not be back.

I feel that even being handicapped with 1 guard, Capel needs to find a way to win 3 of the next 5 even without Burton. I feel he needs to Coach better along with the team improving.

Most disappointing aspect of the game to me, (outside of coaches not having an answer for the half court traps), was Femi losing his composure. Blowing kisses to the student section after scoring in the first few minutes of the game and then looking for foul calls was all X like. He let the crowd and intensity get into his head. Something he showed no signs of last year.

Its 1 game but if Femi doesn't improve a lick or even gets worse like Johnson did in his career, that's a pretty bad sign for your HC (who was a PG).
I've been posting this ever
since Capel arrived. He's an
ex PG (a vey god one actually).
He runs a PG oriented offense.
Didn't we see that for three
years with X. We are now
seeing the same with Femi. I
like Femi a lot, but last night
we saw a coach, Huggy.....who
had his guards pick up Femi
way out front, double teamed
him and forced him into error
after error. This is what Huggy's
teams do well. He knew exactly
what we do in our PG oriented
offense. What hurts right now
now is we have no option with
our off guards.... a frosh and a
walk on. I'd also like to see
Capel adjust his approach on
offense. I prefer fast pace, but
with this group I feel we ought
to slow it down, maybe run a
motion offense, and get others
involved. What we do reinforces
one on one play with players
who aren't talented enough to
do it. It also encourages Gueye
to freelance away from the hoop.

Anyway, with all that, I feel we
can maybe win the next two
OOC games with hustle, and
intensity.. We need Burton
and Horton desperately.

I've been posting this ever
since Capel arrived. He's an
ex PG (a vey god one actually).
He runs a PG oriented offense.
Didn't we see that for three
years with X. We are now
seeing the same with Femi. I
like Femi a lot, but last night
we saw a coach, Huggy.....who
had his guards pick up Femi
way out front, double teamed
him and forced him into error
after error. This is what Huggy's
teams do well. He knew exactly
what we do in our PG oriented
offense. What hurts right now
now is we have no option with
our off guards.... a frosh and a
walk on. I'd also like to see
Capel adjust his approach on
offense. I prefer fast pace, but
with this group I feel we ought
to slow it down, maybe run a
motion offense, and get others
involved. What we do reinforces
one on one play with players
who aren't talented enough to
do it. It also encourages Gueye
to freelance away from the hoop.

If you look up Capel’s stats, he played exactly like X does and Femi is going to…

his junior year he AVERAGED 16 SHOTS per game. His high water mark was 4.1 assists. Can you imagine this board with a PG like that? Anyways, seems he teaches his PG’s to play like he did

I did not watch the game, but the last time we played them at home Huggins did the same thing to XJ and Capel made no adjustments.

When I coached, (at a much lower lever), if someone used half court traps, all you have to do is run what's called Early O. You start your offense as soon as you break half court with an outlet in the middle and at least one wing out high around the time line. Easy way to break half court traps and does' t take a genius to figure out nor does it take overly skilled players to break. Do that a few times and get some easy baskets and they will pull out of it.

Just out of curiosity, where are you seeing 40? The media guide says that the school record for turnovers is 38 against Iona on January 22, 1979.
Yeah ... my bad. I looked it up too (at halftime) and I was referring to that Iona game. But I guess in the course of my 2nd half counting, my brain kicked it up a couple — Ah, hah, hah!

You're right, that's one way
of beating it (never heard of
"Early O" though, LOL). I also
believe that you dribble up
to, but not INTO the trap.
Your other guard is the
outlet and he will obviously
be guarded. That's three of
the defensive players on two
offensive....bring one of the
back into the middle and hit
him with a pass. They can't
guard those two with one.
This is basic Bball 101.....why
Capel has his pg try and
dribble, through or around
the double really perplexes
me, but we've seen it with
X and now with Femi.

That’s not what hurts him. 6 assists in 19 minutes is insane! He may lead the country in assists with dump offs to TJD!!!
That's the conundrum with him. Numbers aren't an issue. They never were. And sometimes he'll be the best player on the court. But.....
But yes to what u said before and Femi and headcoach.
I feel coach left Femi out to dry last night. But some of that was just having no other guards to help but still there were plenty of things you could do.

agree. The idea behind Early O is you attack the pressure with passes instead of the pressure attacking you.

I was really impressed with the way Will kept being the calming guy every time Femi lost his composure. Pretty sharp for his age. Gonna be a long season
