** Leave No Doubt!

** Tonight there was none.

** A few Pitt fans such as myself have been taking our first looks a little cautiously with doubt trying to locate the team we think we can be. But tonight, we finally got a pretty good look at that greater group in this contest against the Hated Hoopies.

** In all ways, shapes and forms, this was a first class *ss kicking against a Big 12 team.

** Sure, if you wish, comment on the incompetence of this particular P-5 opponent. Such assertions would seem to be in order. Yes … WVU was bad.

** But Missouri was last year too. And this similar test was never a contest.

** And it wasn’t as if the Panthers were firing on all offensive cylinders.

** We didn’t blister the nets from three, and the guy who is perhaps our lead gun looks to be mired in a bit of a shooting slump.

** But we rebounded, offered legitimate defense throughout, and played the kind of offensive basketball which appears to be perfectly according to Coach Capel’s game plan.

** I came into this game thinking Tucker DeViries might be the kind of player who would sink 20 or so, even in defeat. Instead, with the attention the Panthers placed upon him, he looked much more like a Missouri Valley player instead of a Big 12 player.

** In fact, when Tucker notched his 5th foul late, we noted that he garnered more fouls than points until we realized that the points updates on the Pitt scoreboard are notoriously slow. Still, 6 points and 5 fouls is still pretty fun.

** It was especially fun because Tucker seems like a perfect kind of player to hate.

** Do you know what else was fun? Dunn was fun.

** I recall an interview with Coach Capel not long ago offering the suggestion that Damian wasn’t quite used right offensively at Houston. Do you think maybe Coach knows what he’s doing?

** Damian was wonderfully efficient, scoring from deep, midrange and down low.

** Just like Jamarius Burton, one has to feel pretty good about him backing down any opponent to score in the paint.

** But let me get to the player who deserves credit this day more than any other – Mr. Guillermo Diaz.

** It’s probably fair to state this was his best overall game as a Panther. Last time out, I lamented his taking 11 shots which seemed like a few too many. But tonight, his shot selection and offensive decisions were nearly perfect, save one ill fated drive into the paint.

** But he was wiry and tough in the paint, and finally garnered his first double-double as a Panther. If this is the level at which he can play most games this year, this is a tremendous sign for his team.

** Still, between Ish, Jaland and Damian, these three took 62% of the Panther shots tonight. This feels like the right equation.

** Truth be told, it was difficult to find any fault in the Panther equation tonight. Cam and Ish were splendid, and Zach looks to be settling into a perfect role.

** The only shortcoming in the math might be the number of minutes being offered by the bench.

** It seems like Jeff is bringing along Bebah slowly, which seems like the better decision at this time. But I suspect there will be a game, for one reason or another, that we’ll need to count on him to be on the floor for 20 minutes or so. Time will tell if he’s up to the task.

** And of course, Capel also looks to be bringing Amsal along slowly too. Tonight he tantalized us with his three ball, but also a high school level turnover.

** But this does indeed feel like nitpicking this night. Our Panthers were wonderful and did everything they needed to do to rightfully ramp up expectations to date.

** Our team has one more cupcake until we truly get to stack ourselves against better doubt.

** A week from today, we get to travel a couple hours south of the Hoopies to face the Tigers from Louisiana. Win that one, and we should face a team who just scored 103 points against the #8 team in the country.

** But that’s getting too far ahead of myself. But I guess that’s what happens when you put a beatdown on an opponent like we did against the Hoopies tonight.

** It’s great when doubt turns to hope, if not even hype.

** And once again, I’m pretty hyped about our Panthers.

The only negative I have for this game is that it doesn’t really provide an indication on how the rest of the season will play out

With that in mind, it was more than satisfying to have a 20 point advantage before the game really even started

Thanks DT, as always great re cap. First of all I wasn't impressed with WVU's
talent level. IMO They're gonna get blistered in the Big 12. If they didn't get some
late 3 pt shooting from their bench, when the game was a basically over, it
would have easily been a 30+ pt win for us.
Not Lowe's best game scoring wise (he was ice cold from the field) and had a
few un typical TO's....but he did have 9 rebounds, and that's terrific for a pg.
He also ran the offense effectively, as he always does. Great players find other
ways to contribute when their shooting is off.

As for the 3's...we were 10 for 27 for a not so bad 37%. When you consider
that Lowe had an uncharacteristic 0-6, and the late game subs were 1-4, the
3 pt shooting was more than good. I'm sure the coaches are more than aware
of that.

Diaz, as you said, "probably had his best game as a panther". All that with a busted
lip, yet returned to the floor after getting stitches. Glad to see us clobber WVU.

Love the team chemistry so far. A little concerned about depth after the first 6. Sort of like 2 years ago…They need more production or will run out of steam running the same 6 night after night.

Corhen - amazing upgrade offensively, but just as frustrating from the line as Fede. Small sample size and Fede is at 28% this season from FT, so not as bad…

Cummings - Seems great at driving and FT. His 3 formation is ghastly to the eyes…He either looks off balance, falls down, on all his 3 attempts. Even going back to high school vids he did this…

Amsal - 50% from 3 through 2 games. Small sample size, but curious what we get if minutes pick up. Has some nice passing. And an awful TO last night.

Just watched the game as I went out last night to a friends to watch the fight . The thing both events had in common was how uncompetitive both were . Neither Mike nor WVU distinguished themselves yesterday .

It’s going to be a long season for WVU .

I’ve got no problems with bringing the freshman along slowly .

Dunn and Corhen are excellent additions .

Not an easy thing to do to replace both Bub and Blake , but I think this years collective ( Tomlinism ) is going to exceed last years team .

Really solid outing for GDG and if Zac could only bury those open 3’s what a player he’d be .

5 things worth monitoring.

1) Damian Dunn has 2 total turnovers in 4 games. His ball control has been outstanding and way better than his former 4 seasons. As a team, we are now 18th nationally in turnovers per game. I want this number in the national top 5. Dunn and Leggett currently lead the team in total win shares and Dunn has the highest offensive efficiency power rating on the entire roster at 143. His best season prior to this was 103. Dunn has been wayyyyy better than I expected and wayyyyyyyy more efficient than I expected preseason. These efficiency numbers will drop, but he looks headed for a very strong senior season.

2) Guillermo currently has a DR defensive rebound rate of 27. To put into perspective just how dominant this is on the defensive end, there are 3 players total going back to 2009 that are anywhere close to this. Blair, Champ, and Gary Mcghee in only 1 year, 2011. I dont expect this to hold for the whole season, but he is considerably better on the glass right now than his prior 2 years and we are getting over 8 boards per game in only 25 minutes of action. It would be really nice if the rest of our team stepped up here and gang rebounded. We are not where we need to be on the glass as a team. Angry Guillermo = good Guillermo. Maybe his brother should start pushing him around every pregame to get him fired up and ready to go.

3) As a team, we are shooting midrange jumpers at 48% and have 5 players on our team over 50% from the midrange. That speaks volumes to the scoring firepower we possess. The 3 point shooting sits at 35.5%, but I think this number has a chance to be a bit higher. Lowe and Cummings are the 2 weakest links from 3 through 4 games, and I doubt that holds much longer. Austin can hover around 33% and thats fine. And Delalic will get more time as the season goes on. We are shooting 71% in the interior. The 2 weakest links from the free throw line are Leggett and Corhen. Leggett shot 85% the last 2 years. Corhen averaged about 73% the last 2 years. Both will improve and be better.

4) Cummings is averaging 6 points per game, with an ORTG offensive power rating of 122 which is terrific off the bench. His assist to turnover ratio is over 3:1. If we need offense, he will provide it. We just need much better defense and rebounding from him to be a solid depth piece. He is not rushing the offense which is good. I would maybe argue he should be a tad more selfish shooting the ball.

5) Jaland Lowe currently has the 2nd best defensive power rating on the team, Austin is currently best. (Kante is actual best but he is not getting enough time to mention him). The drop-off from Lowe to Cummings on the defensive side of the ball is pretty significant. Lowe has made significant progress from a year ago on defense. Lowe is also shooting 95% from the free throw line. Our defense is currently much better than expected preseason and that is without Kante in the rotation currently. Lowe is a big part of that and that needs to continue. He just needs to slow down and be more patient on offense. Our unadjusted team defense per Torvik is 28th in the country nationally, 18th in the country on pomeroy. The 2011 team defense finished 24th in the country. The 2011 team offense finished top 5. For those that do not remember, our 2011 team was the Big East Champion and earned a 1 seed. Our offense needs to be better than whats its been so far this year. That starts with Lowe.

Bonus-

Injury or no injury or whatever the case, Jorge cannot be in the rotation right now. He's literally in the red in every aspect of the game and that is bad. Points, rebounds, assists, shooting percentages and he is close to the bottom in defense. We need Delalic to get better much sooner and get Jorge out of the lineup. In limited playing time, the shooting percentage and DR rebound rate from Delalic looks good and he is not a total net negative out there like Jorge. Next game, I hope we get a big early lead and get Delalic and Kante more time.

Non Conference schedule is getting a nice boost and we want all these teams we beat to continue to win.

Radford with a nice road win today.

Murray State is blasting undefeated Middle Tennessee on the road. Murray State was the underdog in this game and they are up big in the 2nd half. This would be a real nice boost if this score holds as Middle Tennessee is ranked higher than multiple ACC teams.

VMI picked up a win today, our next game.

Wisconsin just took down top 10 nationally ranked Arizona. LSU took down Kansas St. on the road. Eastern Kentucky hung tough with Clemson.

Ill be interested to see how West Virginia responds against Gonzaga. I dont think Gonzaga beats them anywhere near as bad as us.

Ohio State, Mississippi State, and Wisconsin all in the national top 30 on Pomeroy and top 35 on Torvik. LSU close to top 50.

However,

ACC not looking so tough thus far in recent games.

Syracuse keeps beating bad teams by minimal points. Overrated Wake Forest just got blasted by Xavier and anyone that saw the 2 scrimmages knew they were not ready for the big time. Virginia Tech just got clobbered by Penn State. Louisville was blown out by Tennessee.

They did beat Charleston Southern today, one day after losing to Tennessee Tech.

Looks like Eastern Kentucky was actually beating Clemson with around 13 minutes left in the game, and then Clemson went on a 21-2 run.

Also, as stupid as it is… doesn’t Duke losing to Kentucky and UNC losing to Kansas hurt us a bit too? Although they both have a few more big non conference matchups.

As of right now (it could look differently by the end of the season), Duke losing to Kentucky hurts a bit because Duke was supposed to be better than Kentucky. And UNC losing a close one to Kansas doesn't really hurt, because Kansas was supposed to be a little better than Carolina.

I'm glad this has been mentioned about Jorge and Delalic. Jorge basically adds nothing when
he's on the floor. I'm sure he's a great team mate and seemingly brings great spirit to the
team. Rotation? He should be no part of it and should only get mop up duties at game's end.
As for Delalic I really liked his highlight film from his play in Europe. He showed good movement,
both on and off the ball, and obviously is a pure shooter from deep. He gets a pass at this point
due to his injury and not having the opportunity to fit into what the regulars are doing. Hopefully
this comes with time, but I'd like to see more off the ball movement when he is in there. Right
now we have six players playing at a high level, plus an improving Cummings. My sense is he
will get his game back and fit into the rotation.
