Zeise

Pitt needs a bag man with a very big bag. That would net some nice prospects. It's time to get dirty.

if you read that story about the SEC bag men, the bags aren't really that deep. Mostly everyday fans who instead of donating $1000 directly to the Athletic department get together and create a nice pool of money to draw on when making one of their visits. if you're visiting a poor family from the deep south, couple thousand goes a long way. It isn't the T Boone types doing this.

So Tony, if you are interested, please get the ball rolling!

Its usually only a few that are really making things happen behind the scenes.

a few active, but they make the calls to the people they know will support the cause. Everyday joes who are willing to kick in $1000 rather than give it to the AD and go golfing with the coach and pose for selfies.

Big time programs have about 10,000 people like that. Pitt might have 10.
It's always easier to spend other people's money , but if Pitt wants to win at the revenue sports maybe it's time for them to spend some of their money to get the ball rolling . Pitt in FB will always be second fiddle to the Steelers , but there's no reason why they can't get 60k to their games if they're winners . No one wants to go see Pitt squeak past Youngstown St and wining 8 games won't excite anyone to purchase season tickets. Why would any recruit pick Pitt over programs like OSU ,PSU , Michigan etc when you play in front of packed stadiums filled with passionate fans ?
It's not rocket science winning fills the seats , filled seats generates revenue that will far exceed any investment they make . The sad truth is those in charge don't care enough so why would a big money alumni want to invest in programs that excepts mediocrity .

Jebus W. Chryst, for the final time, Pitt had an active booster community at one time. It was slammed shut. Today, they still want the money donated for sure, but the donors are to stay the $%^& out of things and let the suits use it for the Transgender Pokemon team or some other sort of rot.

People who give meaningful money are Type A's, and you can decide for yourself what the A should stand for, but they are not donating for the Love Of Dear Old Pittsburgh alone. Sure there is some of that. But like all egotistical leaders, they want to brag and boast about the W's they facilitated.

Somebody at this point seems to get some kind of Toady Alert on their phone to come to the administration's defense. "They listened to donors and got rid of Dixon and see what happened!" IF that is even true, and I challenge it ... it was half-assery at best. They conveniently "listened" only as justification to dump Jamie's big contract. They certainly didn't "listen" in the replacement process! NOBODY of right or even wrong mind would have been rooting for crap like Stallings. And if the claim is that the boosters didn't respond with coin to warrant a valid replacement, the university was moronic to have listened to them about dumping Dixon at all.

When allowed the freedom to really influence, Pitt boosters HAVE delivered great players and coaches in the past (the long ago past at this point, granted. And it is still no guarantee of winning big (Bama, OSU etc likely would always likely still excel at those levels). But the way Pitt does it today ASSURES there will never be top results.

Pitt has averaged 60k people once in the last 100+ years of playing football. Pitt must downsize the capacity of Heinz. Do it prior to the start of next season. The carrot is PS on the schedule. Make Heinz 50k or so, and the only way to guarantee yourself a ticket is via a season ticket package.

The administration has to want it, and the moneyed boosters have to want it. Outside of the Haymaker/Octane hires, I really don't think the hires have been bad. We aren't giving them the support they need in recruiting they need to be successful.
If the U admin isn't fully committed to a Top 20 program a U will never have serious donors, boosters or dedicated fans!

Simple!

He has only really had two full years of recruiting classes. His first full class is RFR and SO. Next year the D should be significantly better or you can start second guessing PN. Until then we just have to see how it plays out.
Too many stooges think recruiting classes come in as 4th year players. Pitt has to play too many players who aren't ready yet. We lost a lot of talented seniors last year. Duzz's recruits are still too young for the most part. Give it time.

I'm sure the other tenant won't mind.

Why ? Because they squashed the only small era of winning FB . Winning fills the seats and it's not a one yr thing . It needs to become a tradition then 10-20 % of graduating seniors become season ticket holders because they had such a great time attending games . Have free concerts after the games make it an event that the students won't miss and WIN .

If Pitt won the next 3 National Championships, do 70K show up for every game, 60K?

You'd have a far better chance to have won the big powerball drawing last week than Pitt winning the next three national championships . After the first two the administration would decide to deemphasize athletics !

Zeise was originally recruited as a receiver, switched to lb then suffered a season ending injury. I think it's fair to give him more than one game to determine how well or poorly he's going to play the position.

Overthinking that one.

If that ain't the truth.
A nitter would plant a story in the P-G that Pitt was short cutting academics.....and the Foreign Language requirement would be reinstated.

In way over his head.

How a guy like chryst can recruit top end offensive talent and be so bad in getting defensive help is stunning to me.
He was an offensive coordinator. It was pretty clear unless the kid was a can't miss recruit everybody was talking about he didn't really have an eye for defensive talent.

Excuses. Same excuse for the past 35 years, "Time, Give it Time". BS. This is Narduzzi's 3rd season, no progress on defense - NONE. Offensive Line is still Big, Fat, Weak and Slow. Pathetic really. Is Walt Harris still around Pittsburgh? Maybe he can teach HCPN a thing or 1000.

To me its both the admin and the fans. Fans should have showed up and supported the team after beating clemson. But the Admin gets most of the blame as far as I am concerned. Hiring stallings is a good point but the defenders will say they couldn't get anyone else who was interested. But they had the chance to hire a big time wrestling coach, a top 5 to top 10 coach and they had boosters willing to kick in and help but the admin still went out and hired a unproven coach. That was all I needed to see that they don't want to be good at sports. They want to pretend to be a ivy league school who cares more about competing the right way than winning.

Other than OL he didn't recruit any position that well. He was pretty good at finding guys like Connor, weah etc but they weren't able to find anyone on the defensive side. He left the D in horrible shape and had they not brought Peterman in the last two years would have been the same as chryst first several years 6 wins.

Fair points. We certainly don't have the most amped rah-rah fan base. I'm sick and tired of the gripe about the Duke game though. First, I was there and it was a solid crowd for Pitt. If only 15,000 showed, that would have been a legit condemnation but we had our usual 45,000 or so. For a game like that, where we had no chance of winning a championship after several earlier disappointing losses, against one of the bottom-scrapers of the division, we normally would have gotten 30,000 or so. So the Clemson game DID produce new attendees. But one nice win isn't going to immediately make rabid dogs out of a base that's been crapped on for THIRTY SIX STRAIGHT YEARS.

exactly. Chryst's defensive recruiting was bad, but really going back to the Walt days no one has been able to recruit any linebackers. Walt did the best with Hayes, Blades, Session & McKillop, but still missed out on Lee & Pozluzny. Wanny had Dan Mason and that's about it. Chryst was even worse at LB and so far Narduzzi is continuing the poor LB trend.

That probably is the most astonishing point ... Walt was a better LB recruiter (not saying he was good, just better than what we've had for ten years now).

Hope & Despair at the same time.

I can live with Pitt not winning big. I just want to see them try.

Truth, even offensively he was a pretty lame recruiter. I can at least give him credit for the linemen, building the foundation, and trying to build a power run game. Even with the lack of very many big offensive recruits, I just the defensive recruiting was glaringly worse. The leaders of last year's defense, they were guys who gave their all and bought into narduzzi's system. But they were lightly recruited by anyone and basically brought here to fill roster spots because chryst couldn't sign anyone of note.

So much for this being a thread about the wonderful performance of Zeise. Kid played a flawless game as long as you don't count shooting the wrong gaps on most run plays, failing to cover the RB out of the backfield or show any resemblance of having a clue out there. I give him an A- as long as the above responsibilities of an outside linebacker are excluded from the evaluation process.

Oh and if our lb's as a group had any ability in pass coverage our DL would have had a better behind the line of scrimmage performance. Hard to get pressure when QB is throwing to wide open RB/TE's within 2.5 seconds all game long.

It is a talent, not age issue.

Wrong. There are some 18 year old kids ready to play but most aren't. I think when the kids Duzz has brought in get a couple years under their belts it will show. especially the guys on the line.
Duzz has guys with a couple years under their belt. He also has guys he kept around and has been coaching for 2.5 years, even if he didn't bring them in. Plenty of FR, RS FR, SO, and RS SO can contribute, and do, all around the county. Ours just haven't been very good.

Yep and the fact that 2 converted Safeties which combined for maybe 3 or 4 scholarship offers are keeping them on thr bench speaks volumes of those kids' abilities.
