I heard the color man describe Pitt playing a version of the Amoeba Defense. He stated that this was the defense of Tim Grgurich during his time at Pitt. I distinctly remember the Amoeba Defense used extensively in the early 70's under Buzz Ridl, although Tim Grgurich was an assistant at the time. I have always believed that this was the design of Ridl, not Grgurich, although he carried on that defense when he took over as head coach.
Is it possible that Tim was the actual designer of the defense and brought it to Buzz? That is not how I remember it, but I have been wrong before. I still think that it was Buzz's design.
Hail to Pitt!!!
