Article is actually by Jenny Vrentas.....
but it's a great read for sure. Gotta love TJ, and just when he was looking like a bust of a 4 star DL, Chryst had the foresight to move him to the OL and now he'll be a NFL 1st rounder. Gotta love that. Seems like a great kid too.
Another example of how great OLs are made, not born. A guy doesn't have to be a 300 pound hulk coming out of HS--many of today's best are tall, lean-framed guys with great athletic ability. They can be bulked up and taught technique by the coaches, but the athletic ability has to be there already.
Brian Kelly and Butch Jones both used to say that when they were recruiting potential OLs, they liked to watch them play basketball. If they had good hands, feet, agility and coordination, the coaches could make them great OLs. While at Central Michigan, that's how they had two zero star guys go as OLs in the first round (and Eric Fisher was the #1 overall draft pick) between them.
Jack Conklin, Michigan State's sophomore All-American tackle, is another one of these guys. He was 6'3 235 as a HS junior but was an excellent basketball player. He grew a couple of inches and a few pounds by the time he was a senior, but he was still a zero star recruit. I have linked a good article on Conklin that discusses how MSU discovered and developed a guy who was able to go from zero D1 offers to a future NFL first rounder.
