Watching a lot of rugby given the World Cup is going currently.
Is the lateral pass underutilized in American football?
Watch a bit of rugby and see how they defend the line laterally. They don't all collapse on the ball, because the ball will move laterally to get a player into space on the wings.
In football, all defenders convergence on the ball.
Think of a screen pass or pass to the flat. Get moving upfield, have a player a few yards lateral, defenders converge....bang...crisp rugby pass and off to the races.
Or those short yardage push the ball carrier forward plays. It's like a rolling maul in rugby. Get one of those going in short yardage, bring a player off the edge when it's bound up and bang...rugby pass and off to the races.
The ball skills to do this aren't hard to learn. Bring in a NZ high school rugby coach during camp. Play some rugby to warm up.
I'm on my way to America right now (literally an hour out from SFO) if the OC position opens up! We can innovate!
