WSOC vs ND ACC Tournament, Round 1

BTW, this is why I am glad our game was first. Game two isn't going to actually be on the Network until right around the time the first half ends.

I wonder why they didn't make the kicks something like 5:30 and 8:00?

Since there aren’t OTs in the regular season, wonder how many players on each team have taken PKs.

Even when there was overtime in the regular season they didn't do PKs at the end of overtime.

So very few of these players, almost none for Pitt, have ever taken a PK in college before.

ND was an inch away with that ball hitting the crossbar. And Pitt was a perfect through ball with shot over the bar. Tough ending here. It both will do well in NCAA.

Good game and goal keeping on PK's is seems to just guessing the right or wrong direction. We missed one...hitting the goal post.

PK shooting has much more deception then it used to. I blame Neymar. It’s tough for goalies. The Ole Miss goalie saved two today, both kicks were pretty close to her. Some goalies can just jump and extend, and some look a bit slow and can’t get down quick enough.

Here’s a question: ND changed GKs for the shootout. The rule is that you only can use players in the game when it ended unless there is an injury. (If you remember, in the Euros they substituted goalies in the final minute so the taller one could play in the shootout.)

It didn’t look like the ND GK was injured. She was standing on the touchline.

Can Waldrum challenge that change, and why didn’t he? Can he protest the game now?

What we needed was for ND to emulate Sergio Ramos in the 2010 World Cup. He is a good PK taker, but he put one into the upper deck. Spain won the match anyway.

The GK can move before the ball is struck. But you have to move laterally and keep at least one foot on the line. You can’t move off the line to cut down the angle. As slow as our GK was reacting, she needed to guess and move early.

Yeah of course. You hope your GK can guess right and save 1 of 5. They’re the ones with no pressure.

but that said, these keepers looked far from Penalty specialists. NDs 4th shooter had a poor shot (pass) that didn’t reach the goal line before bouncing first, our keeper guessed right, and still couldn’t get to it. I’m thinking that’s one she thinks she should have saved.

Tough loss. I have never seen worse goal keeping on PKs.

But, losing to #4 ND on PKs in extra time should help Pitt’s NCAA seeding
Their RPI went from 13 to 12. Seems like a 4 seed is about right.

ACC CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
#1 North Carolina vs #2 Florida State
Sunday @ Noon on ESPNU

Some teams are surging in the RPI, including Penn State. Seems like Pitt should not drop below a 4 seed, but I don’t their their chances at anything better are very good.

Penn State beat a good Northwestern team. They will play in the final against a surprising Michigan state. That win helped PSU. I don’t know if anyone saw MSU playing this well.

Michigan State is impressive. They have mostly been a dormat for years, very similar to Pitt really though not quite as dramatic. That coach is just a winner. Won a national title at Grand Valley State and is only in his 2nd year in East Lansing. That will be a fun final to watch on Sunday, as will the ACC.

They also built this year on a large volume of transfers. 7 total transfers. Teams they played on Butler, Florida State, South Carolina, Duke, Colgate, and Grand Valley, and Hartford. Looking at NDs roster they have a ton of Grad and seniors. Their hat trick player from last night is a sophomore, but they have a major loss of players coming up.

Notre Dame has 7 graduate students and 6 seniors. roster at 32 players and potentially losing 13 upper class players.
