He's the gritty dude who comes in, makes some wild passes that work out in his favor, shows some toughness, wins some games, and the fans fall in love with him.

But then once opposing coaches get some tape on him, you realize he's not much of a quarterback. At least not at the moment. We'll see what he can fix in the offseason.

Some of it is him. He has no feel for the pocket and his footwork can be bad. That’s starting to really stick out.

But at some point the rest of the offense has to help him out.
SMU was daring Bell to hand off all night by thinning out the box and dropping into coverage. And it didn’t matter. OL could not do it.

Every defense right now is daring anybody else but Eli and the downfield passing attack to beat them. I’m not going to hold it against Eli that he’s being put in a position to have to overcome that.

SMF's Prediction for Tuesday

This isn’t true. There is clearly a power poll and AP-Coaches poll aspect to their rankings.

I'm not sure what you are saying. The CFP rankings wont be an "ESPN FPI" or "Vegas ranking," where Pitt would be very low because we arent all that talented. It ranks resumes. Sure, some of that Vegas element comes into play but that's why I have 1 loss Pitt 18th instead of unranked, where some AP poll voters will have them.

I didnt even look at this to make my ranking but Pitt's strength of record is 14th. Still pretty good and the rest of this lines up fairly well to my rankings

SMF's Prediction for Tuesday

They rank resumes, not teams. 7-1. Only loss to a Top 10ish team. We will be ranked fairly high. Look at the resumes for teams O ranked around us and tell me why they will be higher. You guys get so caught up in polls. Polls are meaningless. The committee starts from scratch and rank RESUMES and ours is still pretty good. Had we won last night, we would have been #9.

Can’t argue with that analysis. I see the same thing. Especially the fact he doesn’t step towards his target. That’s why his ball hits the turf too often. His bad footwork causes passes to go off target, especially high.

I know that Yarnell threw two a TD passes in mop up time, but his passes were much sharper and he got the ball out quickly.

Yarnell is a better thrower. Just not sure he would fare too well behind this line, in addition to posing much less of a running threat. One thing I've notice with Eli at the games is him throwing crossing routes going to the left with his feet almost both pointing forward (I'm probably not describing that well) and it creating an awkward motion where he has to bring his arm like across his body. I mean that's just one of multiple mechanical hiccups.

I actually would love to see more Yarnell against Virginia. But I think Narduzzi wants to ride it out with Holstein like he did with Pickett and hope that it pays dividends in the end. Well, that's my guess anyway.
