Recruiting Update Utah State DE transfer plans Pitt visit

Utah State defensive end Blaine Spires tells me he plans to visit Pitt Jan. 2-4. Spires is hoping to enroll at a new school for the spring semester, so Pitt would have to be one of the final visits he takes.

Spires has a host of G5 offers in addition to Pitt. This past fall at Utah State, he played in four games due to injury and recorded three tackles for loss and one sack.

Prior to transferring to Utah State, the Youngstown native spent four years at Bowling Green.

Noticed this about our road schedule

We play, arguably, 8 of the best 9 teams, on the road. We only dont go to Clemson. These are tough games.

Duke
Lou
SMU
UNC
NC St
Wake
FSU
ND
Syr

Only the VT road game was against a lower-tier teams.

No road games vs Cal, Stan, BC, GT, Miami, UVa.

Ideally, I think you'd prefer to get a few more easy road games in exchange for getting teams like Wake, SMU, NC St, etc at home.

Bart to Neal play

Really think we tried to do something stupid here.

Now... the play, as designed worked, Neal was wide open (I think it was Neal anyways). However, it is a huge headscratcher. Why do this? We where running at will, 2 runs to get a yard, we win. I dont get it. I really dont get why we do that. We do that during the stupid ass 2 point conversion contest at the end, sure. Not to win the game. It was too "cute"

Didnt like the call at all.

Kade bell

Dude called a great game yesterday. I think it shows the possibilities with this offense once you get a functional o line. Great packages for dugger. Great job working in the pass game. The td catch reid dropped was a great call. The read options and mix of qb runs worked very well with Dugger in.

If they can build up the talent level so that especially in the line it can at least play with ACC teams, I think the sky is the limit for him

Remaining Needs (1/7)

With the news of Pitt receiving a commitment from Oregon DE Jaeden Moore, I wanted to put together a list of remaining needs for the roster.

Must Gets

OL

I think they need one to two more bodies on the O-Line. It is such a crap shoot on how HS kids will develop and even though we have 20 scholarship OL we don't know how they will pan out or who is ready to contribute. We had enough for a 3 deep last year and we saw what one injury (LT) did to the team.

C.J. James - He is visiting this Thursday and when I first saw the post of him being a target I was a little confused. I thought that Cooper did a really nice job at center this year so I wasn't sure why we were targeting another. Well, after watching James' YouTube video of his senior year I am fully putting him in his own must get category. Old man that would be much needed and could allow Pitt to slide Cooper to the LG spot to compete with the new G from Richmond.

It's all about having the best 5 out there, and having good depth.

Probably should get more

DE/CB/TE/P

One more body at DE would be nice to protect against injuries or poor play. Maybe even a bigger body who could have flexibility to slide inside in a pinch.

A CB depth piece would also be good, Battle has "battled" injuries his entire career, Lynum isn't bad, the D2 kid is nice depth but not sure how he'll perform against P4 teams so I'd like to find maybe someone in the spring who is willing to come in. Overman surprised as a pass-catcher and the staff seems to like Malachi as a pass catcher, but Renda has been here for 3 years and it feels like he's been out every year with an injury. Really we have two TE's so another blocking option might be best.

Do we trust Junko for another year?

Nice to Have

RB/WR/DT

Des Reid is an absolute stud but he is also small as shit, we've seen him hobbled in 85% of the games. His backup Goff might have a promising future but is also small in stature. Davis looked okay but is coming off a big injury. I'd like to have a bigger back for short yardage situations.

It looks like it'll be the Kenny Johnson show next year, I am excited to see him be the main target in this offense with Mumpfield being gone. Williams/Lee showed in flashes last year but during the second half Poppi turned into Droppi and Lee had a bad injury. Maybe Spann will pan out and Jean can excel but they are unknown.

I really like the DT's we have but we are thin and an injury away from panic setting in. FitzSimmons I thought was great but he has also dealt with injuries a lot during his time at Pitt. We do have a lot of nice young talent that could step up but if there is a 5th year guy from an SEC/B1G school that can be had then I am all for it.

So disappointed with the schedule

When the schedules are first released, the first thing I always do is check to see how many home Saturday games there are. For me, nothing is better than the big Saturday conference games.

I was excited that we had so many Saturday games this year after only a couple last year. Now I’m noticing that aside from tomorrows game, all the others are noon games (except for the last game of the year vs BC. That’s less than ideal.

What kind of pregaming do you all do prior to a 12pm game?
