Why don’t teams go for two after scoring a TD up one point?

I’m watching the Vandy/GT Birmingham Bowl and the Commodores were up 14-13 before scoring a TD. They kicked an extra point to make it an eight-point game.

Why don’t teams go for two in this situation? If you don’t convert, it’s still a one-touchdown game. However, getting the two points makes it a two-possession game. The math just doesn’t add up to kick the extra point:
  • Extra point: One-possession game
  • Failed 2pt: One-possession game
  • Successful 2pt: Two-possession game
The common rebuttal I’ve heard is that the conversion rate is low enough where you’d rather force your opponent to attempt one. That still makes little sense to me, as I’d rather take my chances to go up an extra possession than give my opponent a chance to tie the game. Not to mention kicking the extra point and failing the 2pt attempt result in the same outcome.

Panther Pride and Musings.

I am proud of these ladies. They have been a marvelous team to watch this year. Often playing like poetry in motion.

I am going to miss Rachel. What a quarterback. I hope she finds a prominent role on the Women's national team. I would really like to continue to watch her play. 4 years as setter with 4 final 4's. Will probably not be matched again at Pitt.

I am sure they are all hurting right now.

This is the beauty of sport. Its easy to root when a team is winning. Important to be supportive in loss.

I hope they continue to retain Coach Dan.

I know college sports now is filled with transfers all over the place. I hope this doesn't sting Pitt. I would really like to see what Pitt looks like with Haiti as the setter and Blaire playing a more prominent roll. Building around Olivia and Torrey and Bre is a great base to start with.

Morning Pitt

This morning Chris listed a bunch of names, Addison, weaver, jones, Pickett to name a few, recruits under the radar, diamondsi the rough, and that Pitt needs to keep finding these kids, for what? A 3 - 9 year? A 7 - 5 year or just an above mediocre year, OR is it the coaching?

Appreciation for the volleyball team

One of the all time great Pitt sport seasons ever. They ran into a buzz saw in the FF, and while it sucks it shouldn’t overshadow what they’ve accomplished.

Sometimes teams lose when they play other great teams, especially when they e already beat other great teams. It isn’t choking. It isn’t quitting. The other team is trying to win too.

A little random, but...

Why are there so many young people on boxes of Depends diapers these days? Like, it's almost exclusively people in their 30's. I hope it's not what I think it might be, whereby young people have gotten so lazy that they see it as acceptable to just sit there and soil themselves without shame.

I'm not saying people - and certainly not the elderly - who can't control their bodily functions should have to feel weird at all for using them, whether it be for full unloadings or just for a little backup. But I sincerely hope there isn't some TikTok trend going around where people just sit there playing video games, eating pizza, and ***tting themselves. Seems odd that I see almost no older people on the packaging now.

Article Capel says six weeks is still the target for Dunn's return

Senior guard Damian Dunn is still on track for a return in the second week of January, Pitt head coach Jeff Capel said Thursday.

Serenity

I’m 57, and a couple years ago I accepted that a team with majority 3 star recruits, led by a mediocre coach, will not achieve more than you would expect from such a group. I grew up in the 70s-80s, and have been waiting and wishing for that success to return. Once I realized it would never happen again, watching these games has become bearable to borderline enjoyable. There is no emotional investment whatsoever, and therefore no disappointment.
