Pitt is trying to make a splash in North Carolina and the coaching staff is recruiting players from multiple classes in the state.

The Class of 2017 is when the Pitt staff will really start to "catch up" to coaches that have been in their jobs for longer periods of time. So it's important to make a note of which players the staff has identified early, since that's a good indicator of how strongly the staff feels about certain players and the early contact could also prove essential in determining who will have lasting interest in Pitt.

Jake Lawler, a four-star, Rivals250 defensive end from Charlotte (N.C.) South Mecklenburg, is the younger teammate of Zack Gilbert, the 2016 defensive end with extensive connections to Pitt who has been a Panther target for a long time.

That association alone is enough to account for Pitt's growing relationship with Lawler, since Pitt's relationship with Gilbert guaranteed that the staff would find out about Lawler early in the process.
