Phillipi and Bonacorsi moving on in consolation rounds.

Both wrestled very well in championship bracket. Phillipi in particular, looks very good. He had a mental laps against the #2 seed from Rutgers that cost him the match, but he appeared to be the better wrestler to me.

Bonacorsi, compared to Phillipi, understandably, appears less polished with his technique at this point but has not backed down to anyone.

Add the new guys already committed( Lewis Newell/125, Jack Davis/138, Cole Mathews/149, and Luke Kemerer/141) to these two, and we might really see what kind of coaching staff Pitt has over the next few years.

Bye the way...I have two observations about recruiting. First, with nine scholarships available to Div. 1 wrestling programs, how is it that Ohio state has 10, NC has 7, NC State has 6, PSU has 6 commits each, already this year? Second, what is going on a places like Drexel, South Dakota State, and Rutgers that they are making waves on the national recruiting scene?

The Pitt athletic department better get their act in gear with the facilities promise ( or at least have something to demonstrate in the way of progress) or they risk undermining the new enthusiasm (with highschoolers and alumni) for the great strides Gavin and Co are making with recruiting. Words and promises will buy time but these young kids do not have a feel for old tradition and "potential." The facilities, as an adjunct to recruiting, are the last link to returning to national power.

Congrats to Nico and Micky on their fourth place finishes at the Midlands Tournament.

Nico is just scratching the surface of what he can do. His leg attach ends up with him on his knees and his back flat, so he doesn't get second and third shots, but if he fixes that (and maybe learns a "go to attack" to threaten for points from the top) he is going to have a very good college career.

Micky lost to the same guy from Rutgers. It was a style contrast in that the kid doesn't do much but is hard to score on. Micky really needed to pressure the guy for his set-ups and/or get stall calls to force him to open up. For the second time though, one mistake at the end ( chose to turn for leverage instead of squaring up to fight the leg attack) cost him the match in OT.

Both have a very good future moving forward.

Davis wrestled Matthews this year at Powerade at 145. Keep in mind that he didn't sign his LOI yet, so we aren't sure to get him.

Those teams get a lot of recruits because not everyone is taking a full, or even half, schollie. Parents will pay, or the get financial aid, to got to a school that has a coach/program that the really want to wrestle for.

Hardly any wrestlers get a full ride. They have half or quarter scholarships and many get academic scholarships or loans to supplement them.

I’m pretty sure that I’m most cases academic scholarships count towards the 9.9 (or whatever the respective limit is for a particular sport). Some academic scholarships don’t count, but there are pretty tough reqs for this situation (top 10% of class, certain GPA, etc). It even goes as far as the need to report a small scholarship from a high school booster club, for example, so that the ath dept can make sure it doesn’t count against the limits.

Academic scholies do not count as long as they are equally available to the regular student body and they are earned. You cannot just make up academic scholie for athletes.

In Div I - the schollie may be exempt and not count against the limits if (as a frosh):

* Top 10% of the high school graduating class
* Achieve a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.50
*. Score 1200 or higher on the SAT or ACT sum score of at least 105

Then, of course, there is never a clear-cut NCAA answer moving forward from there.

We only give academic scholarships to really elite students so there really aren’t many athletes at Pitt that have any academic money.
