As of now Frame is the only senior leaving after this season. Capel has a number of offers
already out there for 2019. If Ellison and Chuka return that would leave three opening for
2018. If he gave those three to freshmen, the only one leaving in 2019 would be Frame,
and that would give Capel only one scholarship to give. My guess is regardless what
Ellison and Chuka decide, Capel will probably go for a few grad transfers. Otherwise in
2019 there won't be any scholarships to give unless he asks a few players to leave.
He could always leave a scholarship or two open, but it would make sense to get a few
grad transfers instead, since they obviously would be one and done.

If Chuka and Ellison decide to leave, Capel could bring a few more freshmen for 2018,
and a grad transfer or two. I have to believe he's doing all this with an eye towards 2019.
Will he fill up with more freshmen? Bring in grad transfers? Ask a few to leave in 2019?
He has some options, and it'll be interesting to see what he does.

He will have plenty of scholarships in 2019 because he will most definitely be pushing out players who can't help him.

Exactly. It's one thing to take everyone back who wants to return this season, but surely he's going to get a lot more selective next year. If the flotsam on the roster haven't shown growth, he isn't going to keep them for 2 more years and jeopardize his ability to recruit.

Right now, there is at least 4 open scholarships available for the remainder of the 2018 class and the 2019 class. But this presumes that Ellison & Chukwuka both return. It also doesn't account for George or Ilegomah, who are both unlikely to make significant contributions outside of being a big body in practice. Both could lose their scholarships.

Scholarships are not a four-year guarantee. They must be renewed on an annual basis. I think most coaches will honor the commitment with a 4-year guarantee, especially if they're the one who recruited the athlete. My coach forced a few guys out of the program, though (non-revenue sport).

I gotta think Capel wants AT LEAST 4 players for the 2019 class, but wouldn't be surprised if he goes for a 5-man class. I think that largely depends on how many of the reserve bigs he keeps around between Chukwuka, Peace, and George. I could see the roster looking something like this:

Sr (2)- Malik Ellison, Kene Chukwuka
Jr (4)- Shamiel Stevenson, Khameron Davis, Terrell Brown, Peace Ilegomah
So (3)- Trey McGowens, Xavier Johnson, one more (Aundre Hyatt or Emmitt Matthews)
Fr (4)- TBD

I would expect 1 our 2 will leave after next season. If they can take 2 more freshmen this year, you take them then plan to take 4 or 5 for 2019.

As I have said on many previous occasions, all P5 football and basketball scholarships are 4 year guarantees as of 2015. Now, you can certainly still strongly advise a player that they will never be in your plans but you cannot revoke a scholarship in basketball for athletic reasons anymore.

Looks like things have changed a bit. Guess that means I'm getting old. Here is an article I found about "guaranteed" scholarships. I think the legislation stemmed from athletes losing their scholarships after injuries, most notably concussions that are so prevalent in football.

Good discussion on this topic. If the new rule mentioned here is in effect, then a few
grad transfers might actually happen this year. I agree with the poster who feels that
Capel wants at least four newcomers in 2019. If he loads up on freshmen in 2018
he's gonna have to find a way to get rid of a few players so that he can have the
openings in 2019. I also agree that Iggy and George could be let go. George IMO
is of no value to Pitt's future, Iggy on the other hand is a Big who can be used for practice.

I'm not sure Pitt is waiting for Kene to decide anything, probably the other way around.

There will be scholarships available for 2019 for sure. Players will be recruited over and will be "politely" told to move on to make them available.

I also expect Capel to get a Grad Transfer or two this season.

I would not expect more than 1 or 2 more freshmen this season after getting 2 already.

Hard to predict, especially with traditional transfers, grad transfers, and possible transfer rules changes. I do think the old Tom Crean style over-recruiting isn't going to happen as much as it used to pre-2015. Ultimately if a player wants to stay, they're allowed to now. I'm not too worried about the "problem" of not being able to over-sign -- we'll still probably have around 4? scholarships to play with next year. You don't want so many that you don't have experience diversity anyway!

This is true generally, but I'm not sure if the scholarship is protected for former walk-ons, transfer players, or players who asked for their release following their first year of eligibility.

Last time I checked, only scholarships given to players prior to their first year of eligibility are guaranteed for 4 years. The returning players asked for and were granted a release, this most likely waived their guarantees because the new scholarship offers would have been given after their true freshman eligibility.

I may very well be wrong, I have not looked into the issue very closely.

But, that doesn't really matter, anyway. First off, there are many, many ways you can find a reason they violate "team rules" and, second, if a player is told they are not in the plans and they will never play, but you would be happy to try to find them another school, they are not going to stay. The "guarantee" means nothing.

Chuck-wuka was only a freshman this year right?

He’s not in the same class as Ellison.

Well you see the quality of kids we are involved with in the 2019 class. A couple of things. Let me just say, it is great to look at a Rivals 150 lists again and see Pitt connected to top prospects. It has been a long while. Second, the 2019 class is loaded with kids in our recruiting footprint. So it has the potential to be a big class for Pitt and Capel as far as opportunity to acquire talent. I looked at the 2020 class, and there definitely seems to be more West Coast, Western and Texas/Gulf Coast kids in the top 150, where 2019 definitely more kids in the East Coast/ACC footprint. (yeah I know, what a geek I actually looked at this.)

So I would think Capel is going to max out what he can offer for 2019.
