3 - 5 in conference play

Agree like to see Duzz avg about 8-4 a year. He has done better at Pitt compared to a lot of other coaches over the years since the 1980s. First time winning 20 games in 2 years tells ya something as to how long it had been. Beat UNC keep it going.

Question in my mind is how soon will Bell's offense start scoring 50 or more points per game against any team out of the top 10.

If that starts now, UNC, Cuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech and BC games wont even be close and only SMU, Louisville and Clemson will remain problematic.

It's not capable of scoring 50 per game.

Yeah. My response as well. Pat has gone better than 8-4 exactly once. I don’t even expect 8-4 to be a baseline, and if 8-4 is a baseline you start getting into more elite programs

For the record I’d like to see Pat AVERAGE 8-4 a year. I don’t think that’s unreasonable. I’d just like to see 9 and 10 win regular seasons more than once or twice every two decades

You can't even agree with yourself.

I'm trying to come up with the coaches who have averaged 8-4 or better in the regular season since Pitt's been in the ACC and I have Dabo, Jimbo, and Mark Richt.

That’s really the question?

I'm trying to stay focused on the task at hand. Focus on going 1-0 this week. Get that dub and then worry about the next dub. Keep winning and everything remains on the table.

Whether we achieve it or not, I think averaging 8-4 should be the goal at Pitt.

We were a 7-5 program from 2000 - 2014, the 15 years before Narduzzi got here. Always good to strive to do better.

For what it's worth, the winning % was 57.29% from 2000 - 2014 and Narduzzi, including this season, currently sits at 57.98%. So he's been at maintenance, basically. Acceptable. Safe B-/C+ type of guy. Nothing wrong with that.

Interesting thread.

I'm not getting caught up in a certain number of wins & losses that would constitute a good or disappointing season. I don't really look at the 2024 team like that. It's a very flawed team that plays with a lot of heart and so far, just finds a way to win. Just my opinion, but it's really hard to put a lot of expectations on a team that can't win the line of scrimmage week to week. There's a lot of youth on this team. If they just go out and compete as hard for the rest of the season as they have the first 4 weeks, I wouldn't think less of this team if they only won 7 games as opposed to 10.

This is not exactly a typical Pat Narduzzi team. One of the strengths and staples of Duzz's program at Pitt has been the development of defensive lineman. The transfer portal & NIL has pretty much neutered that advantage. In fact, this year almost seems like Pitt is both at a crossroads and a program reset. There's a lot young talent on both sides of the ball. Will Pitt be able to hang on to most of it & bolster the roster with more talent, or are we going to lose some key players and sift through the portal trying to plug holes?

Agree completely! I believe Pat should have us in the 8-4 baseline but simply isn’t good enough. Yet. Hope springs eternal that with Bell, we could get there! None of us is getting younger.

Baseline is different than average. 8-4 average means there will be some 6-6 years, and that’s fine as long as there are 9-3 and 10-2 years sprinkled in. For the most part pat has shown he calls at 8 wins. Yes, he had the one 10 win season, but outside of that hey have never gone better than 8-4, and it’s been a pretty hard cap.

I’d expect and hope for a five year run like 7-5, 10-2, 6-6, 8-4 and 9-3. Even if there is a clunker in there where they go 4-8 it’s fine if they recover, but there need to be a few more highs, and honestly 9-3 isn’t even really that high. This year it would only mean having to go 5-3 in the ACC.

look at 2019 as an unbelievably angering year. A year the ACC was down, we were sitting at 7-3 and had a chance to get a NY6 bowl. We ended the season with two absolute clunkers to VT and BC (who was going to fire their coach) and also an earlier loss to a not good Miami team where we couldn’t score a TD. 2022 was also infuriating for multiple reasons as well, both the least of which was a charming soft schedule.

Basically, there have been too many sub 8 win seasons (five) without nearly enough 9+ win seasons (one.)
