100th in defensive efficiency
149th in rebound rate.

Offense is good enough.

Now, look at WVU

152 in offensive efficiency
18 in defensive efficiency
231 in rebound rate

One team is in the hunt for a top 4 seed and one is on the bubble. One team has very bad offensive players. The other team has a considerable amount of offensive talent. The difference? Defense. We look at WVU's team of bums and wonder what the heck is going on but they defend. And they do have that 1 legit P4 player who can get you baskets. Defense is really the only way for this team, especially with Tucker Devries only playing a few games this season.

Pitt, on the other hand, can score. Yes, we have bad stretches as any team does but the problem is defense. Against good teams, the defense is consistently bad.

I would love to see a defensive efficiency breakdown for the minutes that just Guillermo is on the court, versus the minutes that just Corhen is on the court. My eye test and some of the analytics I’ve seen indicate that we get stops when it’s just Guillermo, and we do not get stops when it’s just Corhen.

And Georgetown is one spot ahead of WVU in defensive efficiency (17), in the same neighborhood as them in offensive efficiency (182), way ahead of them in rebounding rate (56)... and, yet, not even going to sniff the tournament (78 in NET).

Proving once again that you can't just pick two random teams and draw a ton of conclusions in college basketball.

How about the terrible late game strategy in Gtown @ Nova last night? I love these Mon, Thursday, Friday games that the BE and B10 do while the ACC stacks everything on Tue and Wed so we can't watch.

Grown down 1 with 25 seconds. Nova only has 3 fouls, so they elect to use 3 fouls to take it down to 12 seconds which is still PLENTY of time for Gtown to get off a shot and it also gives you plenty of time to commit a reach-in fouls to send them to the line. But what it also does is almost ensure the game ends on their possession. Gtown made a basket with 1 second to win it. I thought Nova should have tried to force a Gtown shot around 10 seconds and only fouled if your man got past you, then you reach-in. Nova didn't give themselves a chance to counter with a game-winner though Eric Dixon did get the best possible look from a full court Hail Mary pass with 1 second.

You can't watch TV on Tuesday and Wednesday but you can Monday and Thursday?

While I agree with you that it is hard to draw conclusions from random stats, I will say that I 100% agree that this team's problem is poor defense. We are lazy. We don't clamp down on 3 point shooters and we over help and rarely recover in time. Plus, we don't identify the other team's best shooter and close out on him. (Smith/ Louisville). At times we have trouble stopping dribble penetration as well. Here is the thing. The last 8 minutes or so of the Clemson game proved to me that they can do it, but, you can't just turn it on when you want to. If you want to win at this level, the defensive effort must be constant, each game for its entirety.

Yeah, it's applicable in our case because our defense sucks.

It's possible that we can turn it on and off. But basketball is traditionally a game of runs, due in large part to the tendencies of human nature, so it's also possible Clemson got a little complacent or was a little too mindful of bleeding some clock.

I didn't see it, but that sounds like awful strategy all the way around. Agree with you from the Villanova perspective. And from Georgetown's perspective... it might not have been intentional in this case, but I hate when teams that are trailing hold for the last shot. Like if there is 15 seconds left, I'm a fan of going fast to try and get the first decent shot you can so that you can foul/extend the game/have another chance if you miss.

Right. Tue/Wed, I'm in Pitt mode so I only watch Pitt. I guess I could watch college hoops on the Tue or Wed they don't play but I usually do not, usually due to youth sports. I dont think Im alone. When you stack 18 games per week into only 3 days, you lose a good portion of your audience who are watching their team play or driving back and forth from their team's game or just aren't available to watch ACC hoops between 7-11 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Saturdays are usually jam packed with a bunch of stuff.

You think Javon Small is a bum?

Dude is a 4x Big 12 Player of the Week, leading the Big 12 in scoring at 20ppg, just put up 27 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists vs. #2 team in the country in a win.

He's a bum?

No. You have 1 legit P4 player. Nobody else. Horrible offensive players but they defend. Take Small off the team and last year's WVU team had more offensive talent. Congrats to Devries though because he is doing probably the best coaching job I've ever seen.

They should consult your schedule.

Devries (injured) is P5 talent. And it is P5 not P4 because the Big East has been every bit as good as the ACC over the past few years.

Devries only played a couple games this season and is probably going to redshirt. What they are doing with 1 P5 (happy?) player and a bargain basement player payroll is simply incredible. National Coach of the Year.

They should consult your schedule.

What they should do is stagger the 18 games over 7 days like the Big Ten does. That gives you many more time windows for getting your product out to more eyeballs. Perhaps if Pitt didn't play only Tue/Wed/Sat games last year, the committee members would have watched them play and that would have worked in our favor. But since they couldn't watch us, they only had numbers to go off of

At the facility he's in they only allow the "residents" to watch television certain nights of the week.

So...they gave me TV access tonight so I'm about to sit down and watch some traditional ACC Tue/Wed hoops and what game is on? Frigging UVa/BC. I wouldn't wish that game on my worst enemy. The ACC cant get out of its own way. 2 big matchups at 9PM though and why not. ACC loves 9PM midweek.
