5-7 Bowl teams

Not all bowl games are dumb…..just the second, third and fourth tier bowls played played in places like Detroit and baseball stadiums in freezing weather( is this a reward or Punishment)….yea, the bowls in which Pitt unfortunately typically plays . Still a lot of national recognition and pub associated the big 6 bowls
I want Pitt to go to ANY bowl, better than no bowl at all.

1) It's an extra TV show for me to pass the time on a cold winter night

2) It means that there's one bowl that I can stay interested to watch from start to finish

I'd want Pitt to accept a bowl at 1-11 because I dont view bowl games as a reward. Its just an extra game and entertainment for me.

I don't think any team that has less than 8 wins should be in a bowl. If a 6-6 or 7-5 team does get into a bowl, it's not a real bowl game. It's an exhibition between 2 mediocre teams that no one cares about other than the family and friends of the team and a few die hard fans.

But that's just my opinion and it's not the way things work now. This is professional college football now and it's all about TV and revenue and paying the players.
Every game other than the playoffs are exhibitions between 2 mediocre teams that no one cares about other than the family and friends of the team and a few die hard fans.

If given the choice between seeing my Panthers play one more game and not playing one more game - I'd vote for 1 more game every single time.

Exactly. I diss bowl games but the Pitt (and only the Pitt) bowl game is really fun TV around the holidays. Its pressure-free because to me, I view it as an exhibition game and if they win, I get as excited as a regular season win.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion as am I and I stand by mine. All bowl games are dumb. The schools know it, the coaches know it and the players know it. That is why we see more players every sit out playing in their teams bowl game. The only folks benefiting from it are the people on the bowl committee, the broadcasting company of the bowl and the bowl sponsor itself. Most, if not all of the football teams and their schools lose money.

The fans benefit too, I like having another episode of one of my favorite TV shows aired.

Bowl games have always been advertising and exhibition games. It's just that for a really long time men in really ugly blazers were able to convince a lot of people that they were something that they never were.
Then why do they count on every team's record and affect national rankings if they're only an exhibition game?

Invited? Go!

Get our young players all the reps they can. Bowl season is like an extra spring practice season in December. Two extra weeks and an exhibition game. Always worth it.⁰
A bowl win boosts every alumnus' spirit at the end of the season,
through the winter and spring, and can provide optimistic hope for next season.

Sounds like someone hasn't experienced a major bowl win in his lifetime. Ask those Pitt fans that saw Marino to Brown in the Sugar Bowl if no one cared about that and if Pitt was mediocre then.

I was around then. And the playoffs didn’t exist then. So I’m trying to figure out what your point is?

Major bowls matter. That's why they’re called major bowls. The only fans that say bowls don't matter are teams that don't win them (like Michigan) or Pitt (only 3 major bowl games since 1983 all losses).

It’s actually 2 major bowl games since 1982, the Fiesta Bowl wasn’t a major bowl in 1983.

I clearly stated that now the playoffs are the only bowls that matter. I have no doubt idea why your rambling on about 1983.

Cotton Bowl loss to SMU
Fiesta Bowl loss to Utah
Peach Bowl loss to Michigan State. Peach Bowl is now a NY6 bowl game in the playoff rotation.

"Major" bowls stopped mattering when players started sitting them out. Anything other than a playoff game is an exhibition game.

Then why keep score? Why give out a nice trophy? Why do the schools get millions of dollars that play on them? Why do thousands of fans and alumni travel to go watch an "exhibition" game? Why does it affect college football rankings if it's an exhibition game? Why does Wisconsin have their Rose Bowls listed on a facade of Camp Randall Stadium if it's just an exhibition game. You sound like a fan of a school that doesn't make them.

Dude it's not 1976 when there were 12 bowl games, there's 43 now! Most of them are played in empty stadiums and any player who is going to be drafted in the first few rounds blow them off. Any bowl game outside the playoff is irrelevant and a glorified exhibition game. Also, bowl games were basically exhibition games up until the 1970's, the polls were taken and National Champions were crowned before any bowl was played.

You keep score and keep records because that's what you do. 2 bowls matter. A few others, you can say are the NIT, so they matter a little bit. No other game matters. Just holiday TV programming

Last Years Sun Bowl was a helluva game too, that was serious entertainment, better than anything we've seen since :)

Ask Kenny Pickett how "major" the Peach Bowl was

You didn't answer one of my questions. You think winning a bowl game and finishing in the top 20 or winning a major bowl game finishing in the top 10 doesn't help recruiting? Maybe that explains Pitt lack of recruiting success.

Not since the playoff started, right now the only bowls that are “major” are the 2 semifinals and finals.

You could not be more wrong but if you're happy being wrong so be it.

What are the six major College bowl games?
Simply put, the New Year's Six, or NY6, is an unofficial but commonly referred to term for a group of six bowl games in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the top tier of college football. The New Year's Six Bowls are the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl.
