Thought Patrick Ewing played for G-town. Not exactly a Gannon type school. ???DT is an old guy like me. Maybe he will remember this.
But the name Earl Jones comes to mind. Earl Jones was Parade player of the year, I think a Parade All American 2 or 3 times, he was basically Patrick Ewing a few years before Ewing.
And like Ewing and now Makur, he chose a small DC school, the University of District of Columbia. I mean this was before the days of internet obviously, but I remember him from like Street and Smiths, he was the big time Center between the Sampson/Bowie years and Patrick Ewing.
It was a shocking choice, like saying Makur chose to go to Gannon.
Georgetown is a "small" DC school, no?Thought Patrick Ewing played for G-town. Not exactly a Gannon type school. ???
Duke is a small school , tooGeorgetown is a "small" DC school, no?
Georgetown is a "small" DC school, no?
Yeah I know. Duke is also not in DC.Duke is a small school , too
But both are enormous programs
Ummm...you guys missed my point a bit. Part of it was sarcasm. But UDC, Howard and Georgetown are "small" DC schools. Basketball wise, of course major difference. Academic wise, of course UDC is not anywhere near Howard let alone Georgetown.Georgetown, not really; only when considering undergraduate enrollment size which is similar to other private schools. Georgetown is "large" in financial wherewithal, academic reputation, facilities, graduate/research programs, and of course its athletic department. Neither Howard or UDC is "large" in any of those things.
It is my understanding that Earl Jones when to UDC because of grades. UDC really functioned more like a community college and it still has that vibe and is the absolute bottom rung of DC area colleges.
Here's the thing about Howard, like many HBCUs, it really isn't in great financial shape and you notice it almost immediately when you walk around campus, especially inside some of their buildings, just from the deferred maintenance and upkeep. And Howard is one of the healthiest, and probably the best, of all of the HBCUs. It could be a really nice campus; it has the potential, but it just hasn't been kept up and modernized like other universities. It has a fantastic and proud history though.
His handler, Ed Smith, has a tweet touting him working with his cousin Thon Maker a week before this announcement as a potential 2020 lottery pick. This is unfortunately nothing more than a publicity stunt. It's pretty cool, but count me in as skeptical if he'll ever play for them. I'm not saying his intentions are to do otherwise, but a lot can happen from now until then, including the one-year rule after high school being rescinded.
Just saw an article about Makur at Howard and remembered this thread. Man were you wrong. 🤣😂There’s zero percent chance this kid ever goes to Howard. Ed Smith pulling the strings on another Makur equals just publicity. The only question is he has old as Thon was when Ed had the fake birth certificate saying he was 6 years younger than he was.
Yep. I missed once. Was right about every Pitt player tho! Would you like me to go back to every post about how I said temper expectations for this player, or the staff isn’t good enough and I was basically run off the board?Just saw an article about Makur at Howard and remembered this thread. I'd wait awhile before you go on your look at me chest beating tour. For God's sake can we play the whole season and see what happens first?Yep. I missed once. Was right about every Pitt player tho! You really need to watch more of this team after getting blown out by a bad NEC team with 9 new players? Godspeed. I don’t.I'd wait awhile before you go on your look at me chest beating tour. For God's sake can we play the whole season and see what happens first?
Howard is not the best of HBCUs. Hampton, Florida A&M, NC A&T and a host of others, Morehouse and Spelman are top notch as well. You may hear about Howard aloe, but there are many HBCUs that are good and financially well off. Hopefully more 5 stars will attend them and boost revenues in sports to help advance the schools campus curb appeal among other things.Georgetown, not really; only when considering undergraduate enrollment size which is similar to other private schools. Academically and reputationally, Howard is the “Harvard” if the HBCUs. Spelman may be the Radcliffe or Vassar. But Hampton and FAMU and the rest aren’t on the same level. Big gap there.Howard is not the best of HBCUs. Hampton, Florida A&M, NC A&T and a host of others, Morehouse and Spelman are top notch as well. In my opinion "Harvard" is a bit of over generalization.Academically and reputationally, Howard is the “Harvard” if the HBCUs. Spelman may be the Radcliffe or Vassar. But Hampton and FAMU and the rest aren’t on the same level. Big gap there.
I was just about to post this... BOY WAS I WRONG!So the Maker era at Howard appears to have lasted all of of 2 games.

I doubt he’s enrolled for next semesterIm not saying this is exactly the same as the Bol Bol situation, but have my doubts if we will ever see him play another game at Howard. The term “shut down” doesn’t sound optimistic.
This is spot on. I believe Howard is a tier one school. Spellman, and Morehouse are much smaller schools, but considered to be very solid. Many of the others live at the Slippery Rock level, with the weakest well below that. Who Maker reminded me of making that move was Adonyl Foyle, a 5 star who ended up at Colgate.Academically and reputationally, Howard is the “Harvard” if the HBCUs.
